Crichton was my favorite contemporary author, but with his passing it looks like I'll need to find another one. I always thought Crichton was at his best with the more sci-fi stuff like Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Prey. His stories that were based more in the corporate world, such as Disclosure or Rising Sun were good, but just not at the same level. The only Crichton book that I could say that I disliked was probably The Great Train Robbery.

It isn't a coincidence that many of his books have been adapted to the big screen. Crichton was simply a great story-teller. He had a unique ability to develop storylines with aspects just realistic enough -- yes, even in his most far-fetched sci fi works! -- to keep you emotionally involved.I especially liked The Great Train Robbery (sort of like an 1850s, British version of Ocean's 11, if you can imagine that), Next, and Disclosure. He's one of my favorite authors, and he will be missed.

I have not read as many of his works as I should as he most often writes on science gone awry. A good example, of course, is "Jurassic Park." The book "Timeline" is infinitely much better than the movie, I am sorry to say.

Have not read any of the newer stuff, but Congo, Jurassic Park and Eaters of the Dead are really, really good books.

He has written some very good books but most of his stuff is just going through the motions. Never lived up to the potential of his early novels.

By far the greatest author thus far in history. He uses brilliantly crafted material to make the reader picture exactly how he invisions it. He deserves to be the number one author.
