The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) 4

How you can make a fortune Randland (WOT)

If you could get to Randland there is $$$ to be made as merchant. Big Bucks!
Here is how:

1. Franchise Lip Balm. At least three times a page people are licking there lips (I estimate there are 4800 references to people licking their lips). With all of that lip licking those lips HAVE to be chapped. Lip Balm would make you a fortune.
2. Patent and sell anti-perspirant. You know- like Ban. At least five times per page some poor character has sweat dripping down their face, arms, legs neck and back. I have never read about so many sweaty people. Never have so many sweated for so long for so little to paraphrase Winston Churchill. Besides if we could if people stopped sweating so much we could reduce the length of the books by 10%
3. Invent a portable clothes steamer. Four to five times a day some female character is smoothing their dress. I mean there are so many wrinkled dresses that need smoothing we could make a fortune- and reduce the length of the books by 10%.
4. Introduce wine coolers and Hawaiian Punch. With all the plumb punch being served (almost always in silver pitchers) a ready made punch or cooler would be an instant hit. If I read another description of plum punch I will puke. Perhaps if we made plum punch easy to make and serve we would be spared endless descriptions of this stuff.
5. Introduce white , thin porcelain to replace the endless sets of thick blue porcelain mugs- and I mean endless. Perhaps it would replace the fine sea folk porcelain and spare us all the thousands of references to thick blue porcelain mugs in the books. One more description of thick blue porcelain mugs and I will break all the pottery I ever see.
Well I must go- my wife is glaring at me with a frown crinkling her fair sweat dripping face and those dark eyes glowing like limpid pools in the musky moon

I got the order in a decent amount of time and it arrived in perfect shape. Unfortunately, I have not had an opportunity to start reading it yet.

Here's the thing. A good editor, who would have eliminated the constant recitation of the same ideas/feelings, was missing. The story bogs down because of this and isn't worth investing your time.

Do not hesitate to purchase or give this book as a present. The boxed set is also very accurately made. This is good literature but do not expect an easy reading style such as David Edding's, sometimes it will remind you of Tolkien's slow rythm.

Robert Jordan has created an incredibly disverse, and well though out world. There are several plots going on the intertwine with each other, and the characters are very complex themselves. There's a reason this guy has eleven books in this saga. Awesome read.

I enjoyed all his books, I have read all published books to date (Books 1-11) I say keep reading, even though sometimes Jordan rambles on, and such, even what some say is a Average/Poor book from his. It still is head and shoulders about all written Series save a hand full on equal par. HOWEVER, I DO HAVE VERY BAD NEWS, BUT ALSO GREAT NEW FOR WHEEL OF TIME READERS, AT LEAST WITH REGARDS TO HIS FINAL BOOK #12. Please read the following passage all readers need to know both bits of information.

Robert Jordan (this is his publishing name, not his real)....his real name is JAMES OLIVER RIGNEY, JR. Here is a link so you can read it all([...]). James Rigney (aka Robert Jordan) passed away in September of 2007 (last fall)....however there is still good news for all the readers. The whole staff and editors have the notes and spoken ideas Jordan left while in the hospital the last few days before he passed on. The Book will be named A Memory of Light! The family and editors have hired a Fantasy writer to finish the Series and last book. This Writer (Brandon Sanderson) was a personal friend, and was mentored by Jordan too over the years. He will also have Robert Jordan's wife... Harriet.. helping (she edited and helped on all the books with him). They say on their web-site that they are shooting for Late Fall or Early winter (Sept-Nov) in 2009 to have the last book in the Wheel of Time Series on the shelf. This will be called as I said Memory of Light and will be book 12 and will finish the Wheel of Time. This is what they our saying at least, and they know the book might be BIG, and very hard to get all plots and everything in place...... so the Last Battle can be fought....but they will do it, so they say. I really enjoyed all the books, and I know with all the help from his wife (who knows a man better then his wife) this will be worthy of Robert Jordan's Memory and Life.

I picked up the first three books in a set at a Books a Million, and after I started reading in December I haven't been able to stop. I'm about 1/2 way done with book 7 after about 2 months of reading in the series. It's a very engaging series and has merits for readers across multiple ages and preferences. I recommend this series to everyone except people who don't have at least 2 to 4 hours a day set aside to read, because you won't be able to stop yourself.

While it's apparent that the series has taken a downturn since the third volume, due to what appears to be an effort to simply drag the story out to sell more novels, it's still very well written and developed. Jordan's characters for the most part are excellent, although sometimes his female characters tend to "run together" in thier tendencies. The only issues I have with the series, are wading through what I consider filler to get back to my favorite characters, and the fact that there's some rather heavy "borrowing" from Tolkien and various historical mythologies.
