Everytime you go to RUN it loads up the DOS command prompt..without dos those commands would not be able to be entered. It's the basis for any other Operating System to be installed. Without it there would be nothing to load windows onto..and there has to be a way to operate a system with no OS.

 | VirileVagabond (36) 07/21/2006 | As an average computer user, I would have to say that DOS essentially died upon the release of Windows 95, which wasn't just a shell that sat on top of DOS like the previous versions of Windows but was an operating system itself. In many ways, DOS is like your old bicycle once one gets their license to drive. It served well for many years without much complaint, but it is too difficult to go back. As other comments have noted, the system was cryptic and not very user friendly, though it rarely (if ever) crashed. The bottom line is four stars for serving the industry for so long and so well.

 | NightRaven (0) 05/26/2004 | It was stable, and that's all that matters, I never once got a BSOD from DOS heh heh. After you learned the command line prompts it was almost easier than Win 3.1

 | BIGBABY (10) 03/24/2003 | Some of my games require DOS to be run, but this is the most confusing I've dealt with. If you don't spell something correctly, for example, it dosen't do what you want. I also agree with the comment that it never freezes.

 | SEGISAURUS (1) 03/24/2003 | I love DOS. It requires a little more technical knowledge to use than windows but I've never had a system crash or freeze while using DOS.
