A twist on normal fantasy novels. Though not everyone's cup of tea, Brian Jacques provides a story spun with animals instead of the commonly used fantasy creatures. Although considered children's books, the depth of the characters and story can be suggested to any teen reader. They are full of life, action, and can always be found on the brink of intense adventure.

All his books are becoming increasingly tedious to me. He always has a same style in his plot, just using different techniques. They are becoming so predictable and boring. I enjoyed the first one I read, Salamandastron, then I read two more and they might as well be the same book, as there is hardly any difference between them. It's basically always the cunning and evil bad guys who want to want to overrule the goodies, but small but brave little Redwall comes in and fights and succeeds eventually, with the help of the imperious power of Salamandastron, and the constant guidance of the brave mouse spirit Martin the warrior. You have the good but severe badgers, the gentle but courageous animals like mice, otters, squirrels, shrews etc (the goodies). Then you have the intimidating and cruel animals like weasals, stoats, foxes, ferrets etc (the badies). Occasionally you have other places and other animals outside of the main areas (owls, for example), but they aren't really of much interest. The problem I find in Jacques portrayal of the characters is that they are extremely one-dimentional, the goodies (as well as the badies) always feel an excessive need for violence and revenge, which would be okay if you could really feel evil coming from the badies. But unfortunately, this is hardly ever the case. The badies to me seem more like foolish losers than any real kind of avengable enermy, and sadly, this makes the books very imature and a big dissapointment. I don't much care for his characters as they are not fully developed in such a way that you can sympathize with the motives of the goodies or feel nay sort of anger against the badies The good guys aren't lovable and the bad guys aren't detestable because everyone is always the same. I certainly won't be reading anymore of the Redwall series.

For a children's series, the Redwall books show remarkable depth. Like Huck Finn, the accents can be difficult to decipher, but it's all great fun even when things are at their worst. The plots are all starting to blend together: evil horde comes to Redwall or Salamandastron. Some good guys die with much mourning. Martin haunts the abbey. The entire horde dies. Wow. I'm so excited I can't move.

I tried to read Redwall ... it was childish. I had hoped for another Watership Down or Duncton Wood but, alas, all I purchased was parakeet cage wall paper.
