Chill Factor (Rachel Caine) 4

These "Weather Warden" stories just keep better and better! This picks right up where the second book left off. David and Joanne are heading to Las Vegas to try to catch Kevin, the off balance young man who now holds the world's strongest (and not the nicest) Djinn in his possession. Unfortunately, the master/servant relationship quickly gets turned around and the mixture of Kev's out of control power and the Djinn's are creating havoc. Polar caps are melting, earthquakes are beginning...disaster looms. The Weather Wardens jump to remove Joanne from her going in after Kevin and Jonathan (who I can't seem to get a feel on...is he as bad as he seems?) Then a dying Lewis shows up and twists things all around. After "Chill Factor" I'm not sure if I trust him either. The story is non stop excitement. There is just the right amount of humor in Joanne's adventures to keep the book from being too intense. I thought the first story was a little slow, but that certainly hasn't been a problem in the second and third books. I encourage anyone to try this series. Its different than anything else out there and Rachel Caine stands above and beyond most other writers. See her "Morganville Vampires" young adult series for another great tale.

This series keeps getting better & better, but it's definitely one that MUST be read in order. Just as book 2 picked up where book 1 left off, this 3rd book picks up where book 2 left off, and Joanne has to deal with events from that book.

She also learns about the nature of love, along with battling the forces of nature and driving fast cars.

There are some shocking developments that I can't wait to see dealt with in book 4, which, fortunately, is waiting in my TBR pile.

All my friends and I have read all her books. If you like the first one, buy the entire series. If you like Jim Butcher you'll enjoy these.

Chill Factor (Rachel Caine) 3

Vegas, baby.

This third installment in the Weather Warden series sees Jo burning rubber to stop that little twit Kevin from taking over the world. Now that he's nigh unto invincible (thanks to a heady cocktail of Jonathan and Lewis' powers), he's made his new home a penthouse suite at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Jo has a very unpleasant history with Sin City, and it comes back to haunt her in a Big Way as she desperately tries to locate Kevin and persuade him to see the light.

CHILL FACTOR has a bit of the transitional novel feel to it as a new organization comparable (but sort of diametrically opposed) to the Wardens is introduced, exponentially complicating Joanne's life. Once again, every character except Jo seems to have layer upon layer of hidden motives. In some cases, (such as Marian Bearheart's) these motives made me want to cheer. In others, (such as Lewis') I felt a twist of pain in my gut and, even though he had a quasi-valid explanation, it still felt like betrayal and I didn't like it one bit. But I really did like the book and it certainly provided plenty of fodder for the coming books. Though this isn't the kind of book you'd want to, say, finish after all the bookstores have closed and not have the sequel waiting safely on your nightstand. You really wouldn't.

I found Chill Factor to be a bit scattered but still entertaining. I found myself skipping some pages because some parts of the book were more wordy than I would have liked. David and Jo still have that tortured relationship and the abuse to it seems to be getting worse. If you are a Dave and Jo fan, you will not like the ending. I was pleased at the progress Lewis and Kevin had made. My disappointment in Jonathan continues. This is still a great series and I look forward to reading Windfall.

other books I enjoy: Kim Harrison- Rachel Morgan series, Jenna Black-Morgan Kingsley series, Larissa Ione- Demonica series, Ilona Andrews- Kate Daniels series, Richelle Mead- Georgina Kinkaid series and Dark Swan Series, Audra and Stella Price- Eververse series, Yasmine Galenorn- Sisters of the Moon series, Vicki Pettersson- Zodiac series; Jackie Keller- Hell on Earth series, T.A. Pratt- Marla Mason series; Mark Henry- Happy Hour of the Damned
