Edgar Rice Burroughs 4

I read a lot of ERB as a teen- I liked the Tarzan books well enough, but I was really hooked into the exploits of the gentleman from Virginia: John Carter. With Tars Tarkas watching your back, and Thuvia at your side, life truely is good!

Yes, I know, compared to the more recent wave of fantasy/sci-fi authors, ERB seems a little anachronistic, a fossil from the old pulp fiction days. But he really belongs in the "founding father" class of the genre, along with Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and others. Although best known for his Tarzan adventures, the Martian chronicles and the Venusian series make for most entertaining reading. Since his novels are seldom more than 150 or so pages long, they can be enjoyed in a time frame which leaves you with enough time to do other things, unliked some of the works of todays authors, who seem to be paid by the word. Any true sci-fi/fantasy fan, especially the younger readers, would do well to pay a visit to some of ERB's works. There may not be the "intricate plots & finely-woven character developments" seen in much of more recent works, but ERB will provide you with nothing less than pleasurable reading. After all, isn't that why we read?
