ItemImageHeroin (INN: diacetylmorphine, BAN: diamorphine) is a semi-synthetic opioid synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. It is the 3, 6-diacetyl ester of morphine (hence diacetylmorphine). The white crystalline form is commonly the hydrochloride salt diacetylmorphine hydrochloride. One of the most common methods of heroin use is via intravenous injection. When taken orally, heroin undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism via deacetylation, making it a prodrug for the systemic delivery of morphine. When the drug is injected, however, it avoids this first-pass effect, very rapidly crossing the blood-brain barrier due to the presence of the acetyl groups, which render it much more lipid-soluble than morphine itself. Once in the brain, it is deacetylated into 3- and 6-monoacetylmorphine and morphine, which bind to μ-opioid receptors. As with other opiates, heroin is used both as a pain-killer and a recreational drug. Frequent administration has a high potential for causing addiction and may quickly lead to tolerance.

It comes from opium and eventually is addictive. It is not instantly addictive, however. You have to work at it to get addicted. Also, getting off is not as bad as advertised. So saith the docs who deal with this addiction.

This is actually an odd listing. I don't know anyone who did heroin recreationally. Doing it once or twice doesn't count. These are the lucky ones who tried it and didn't get off on it. They snorted it. Everyone else were "users" and lemme tell you...there's nothing recreational about it. These people were working hard at it...like a job. Ironically, the addicts that I knew could maintain a pretty high level of productivity and creativity as long as their timing was good and their source was reliable. But, life happens and things go bad really fast. Bad road to go down.

I've known a few users in my time, and once, a very long time ago, snorted some (which is considerably different than shooting it. I'm pretty nervous around needles, and being on the spike was never a serious option.

Few of the drugs on this list can be called beneficial or good, and in that sense heroin is little worse or better than any others. In many cases, those who have died from it die as much from the lifestyle around it, as they do from the drug.

This drug destroyed many great people. Stay away. The curiosity may drive many reading this to try it but my friend have fucking scars on his arms from it. He says he still craves it from time to time and he quit eight years ago.

Another real nasty addiction. Watched eight kids share one needle that was stored on top of a project incinerator (think fireplace pushed out about four feet with the chimney flu(?) at the back) that was caked with soot, dust and God knows what else. IIRC, all but three are dead, none from natural causes. Inhaled it once but never mainlined anything, a miracle in and of itself. Nasty, nasty, nasty...

Not something I've tried personally,or want to.I've seen it up close and personal, though, and it's ugly.I've known some very "functional" users, and also known a couple with a child and now the father is dead from it.Thankfully, the Mom is clean now. Many creative peoples lives have been cut short by this drug.Sharing needles is a great way to contract HIV.

I personally love it...the addiction part of it can be overcome if you dont let yourself get carried away. I know its destroyed alot of people but used in a controlled manor its a great feeling. I'm just talking about smoking it, I dont agree with needles but thats just my personal opinion. People use all sorts of things to try and escape reality and this is my favorite way to escape reality. When your feeling really down it helps you feel better, its such a euphoric, calm feeling. Nothing compares. I was addicted to it for 5 months and when I wanted to stop I did. I admit it wasnt the greatest feeling for the first week but it wasnt unbearable. Most of it is in your head. I havent touched it for a year but I still miss that feeling that nothing else in the world gives you. I would do it again if I could get it here but I definatley wouldnt let myself get hooked. I have too much going for me in my life now to screw it up. But once in a blue moon would be great.

It's a bastard of a cycle to get into. It's sad for the addict and their families to be tormented by the drug. And also the forgotten victims of this crap, people attacked for money and goods, for a heroin addict to convert to H money.

As a recreational drug this is on the same plane as crack cocaine. If you have no idea how difficult it is to break the addiction, read John Lennon's description of when he and Yoko quit in the early 1970s and listen to his song Cold Turkey which gives a frightening account of the pain he experienced.

A while back, i suffered from a chronic scald on my left forearm from a camping accident. My pharmacist gave me morphine to dull the pain. I must confess, it worked all too well. After every intake, my body built up an immunity, thus i needed a bigger dosage to achieve the same effect, so i hatched a formula that turned my morphine into heroin, which is 6 times more potent. While the pain was nonexistent, every moment that heroin was not in my veins, i wecame bitter, withdrawn, and felt as if the world would come to an end. I eventually stopped, but had to go through terrible withdrawls, which are ten times more paiinful than anything you can imagine. Even today a voice in the back of my head whispers to me, trying to get meto shoot up. Do yourself a favor, stay away from horse.

I loved heroin more than anything, kept loving it even while it took everything away from me. The high is like nothing else. I am grateful to have survived it, many I know including my husband did not. It scares me to hear people say they can use it for recreation - just once in a while. Don't make the mistake so many have made thinking that you're the one who can handle it, that you won't become addicted - don't take that chance.

Heroin is not a possibility for me because I detest needles. I understand people do heroin because it evokes a feeling of contentment. But you can feel content just having a drink or two, or lounging in a hammock on a spring day. All in all, a good drug to stay away from. UPDATE: I wish I could understand why so many people in the entertainment field have found this drug so mesmerizing. I can't think of anything more repulsive than sticking a needle in your arm! I don't care how great the high would be.

You could probably blame three or four recreational drugs for a large percentage of crime in todays societies and Heroin is one of them. I have known people who have a Heroin addiction and watched them change and even die. It's a shame that we can't try and get the same high from life and an even bigger shame we can't stop these drugs getting through customs.

I don't know why heroin is in a list of recreational drugs. Heroin is a highly addictive, dirty drug. Have you ever seen a junkie? They don't care about anything or anybody, just getting their next fix, even if it means stealing from a family member. Heroin is used more to escape problems as opposed to have fun or relax every once in a while.
