Good experience. Would I do it again? I would have to think about that one. I joined to see the world and to get away from Ohio for awhile (my parents sure as hell weren't going to be moving anytime soon in those days). It worked in that fashion. But......if you're a diehard sports fan, there are certain teams that most sailors seem to suck up to when a championship is on the line. A good piece of advice? Let's just say without going into too much detail that starting right now, friends don't let friends root for the L.A. Fakers NBA team. I MEAN IT. NO BULLSH*T. I learned to really HATE them while in the Navy, still do and always will and am absolutely thrilled to death that my Boston Celtics smashed them to bits for their 17th World Championship. GOOD!! All Faker fans known and unknown can KISS MY ASS and EAT SH*T AND DIE.

I too would say the Navy, I served my entire 4 years on a aircraft carrier, the USS Coral Sea CVA-43, I was an airdale working on the hanger bay, V-3 division from 1968 to 1972 making 3 tours of duty on Yankee Station Viet Nam, very proud of my service and those who served with me on this fine lady. Too bad the Navy sold this fine warrior as scrap metal, a sad end for a fearless war vessel. I sulute all branch of service but none beat the Navy.

Taxi! Marines will get my joke. A four because of Corpsman and Chaplains.
UPDATE: I'd still drink with sailors before all other non-jarheads on this list...

I served in the United States Navy and I would do it 100 times out of 100 times.
I met many friends that I still keep in touch with,I also met my Beautiful wife who served as well.
I had my most fun believe it or not in boot camp at Great Lakes,I served on the best Destroyer in the fleet USS CARON DD-970 and got a taste of the Shipyards while my second command the USS GUAM LPH-9 was being overhauled.
Would have done twenty no problem except I recieved injuries in the commission of active duty while out at sea that led to a medical discharge.
To me there was nothing more exhilerating than riding the waves on a powerful warship arm to the teeth!
By the way the Marines are part of the Navy notice the Anchor in their emblem.

The Navy is the best of the military services. I've been in the Navy almost 22 years now, and still loving it. I like the work and camaraderie. I have worked side by side with the other services and I feel that the Navy has the right approach when tasked with similar situations. Fly Navy!

I served my country in the Navy with expectations of seeing the country and getting in some college. Well through my 4 year enlistment I never saw a ship and the only place I got to see was Afghanistan. As for the college we worked so much I never had the time to even take one class. The only reason I give it a 2 star is because I got one thing out of the Navy, I met my wife.

I did my 20. All in all, most days I loved it, some days I dreaded it. But it was never dull. Nothing I ever did or ever will do can match the mental rigors and excitement of being the Officer of the Deck on an Aircraft Carrier during flight operations, with shifting winds, and merchant vessels and fishing boats all around you. Every service has its purpose. The Navy is the one you want for Strategic Sealift, Nuclear deterrence, and Strike warfare. It's been said, of the last 80 or so incidents where the U.S. Government required military intervention, the Navy was the first one called in about 65 of them.

My husband was Navy in Vietnam. My son is now serving in the Navy Submarine service. He loves it and we are all proud to have him serve. While the submarines may not be for everyone there is a niche in the Navy or in another branch in our wonderful United States Services.

Yeah I know you guys are better than us Coasties but you guys still messcook and do crap work! Well at least in the Army and the Marines you don't do slave labor on a ship. Prospective recruits: Be careful, the TV commercials and what the Navy recruiter is not 'all that you can be'!

The navy is by far the best branch of the military... You get to see the world (for free), get college education (for free), and get to play with the most high-tech equipment in the whole US armed forces... (for free). Also, the navy is the most likely to see battle so your safe with em'. I just joined the navy today and I am very excited about what lies ahead of me.

Dad was in the Navy flying off the carriers. Best brach to be in to get real world training as well as best bet to not be in the middle of combat.

I was in the Navy during the 70s, but was given a medical discharge due to my hearing loss. I won't argue about which branch is the best, since they all have their own particular mission. But I would like to put one rumor to rest. The Marines are absolutely not the first ones in. This job goes to the Navy Seals, This outfit is without a doubt the creme de la creme of Americas fighting men. They were the first in Iraq and readied and softened the enemy for the Marines and soldiers. Sounds like I'm argueing after all, really didn't mean to. But this outfit does so much low profile work it doesn't get nearly the press they deserve. But that's how they like it. I served on the U.S.S. Coral Sea and was not a Seal, but I respect them. They are the pride of the Navy , and unlike the Marines, are not ashamed to say so.

3 hots and a cot till the day you die. The Army plans on 30% attrition in combat, the Marines are the first in and last out, the Air Force is only glamourous if you fly other you are in the rear with the gear, and the Coast Guard more like a civilian job rather than a military one.

This one actually is a bit tougher than the other services for me to rate and comment on. Most of my interface when I was in the army was with the marines and the air force. What little contact I did have with the navy, however, was generally positive. They had somewhat parochial views in committee settings (but then again, so did each of the other services), but the navy guys generally presented their side of the issue in a logical fashion, and were usually pretty good about educating those of us who normally had our feet on terra firma. I could not have made a career in the navy - too much time away from family, friends (and good restaurants!). Too much monotony while at sea. Too many people looking to rip you off while in liberty ports. There's another aspect to it, too - to paraphrase my grandfather when I told him that I had joined the army, he said (complete with Italian accent): You pretty smart to join the army. If you join the air force and the plane gets shot down, you land on the ground. If you join the navy and the ship sinks, you go underwater, but you still land on the ground. You join the army - this way you save yourself all the trouble because you're already on the ground!. the thought of possibly ending up on the ground, but underwater, does not appeal to me at all, but I salute the men and women who go through the hardships peculiar to shipboard life. All the good food and relatively comfortable duty can't compensate for that.

Guaranteed people. If I were ever to join a branch of the U.S. military (I wouldn't) it would have to be the Navy. I just think that it offers the best opportunities for gaining hands on experience at a skilled trade while sailing about the world in a boat. That'd be sweet. I'd even be a submariner, seeing as how today's nuclear subs are quite comfortable, like submerged hotels, at least compared with the subs of the WWII era.

What's that line from "A Few Good Men"? Everytime the Marines have to go somewhere to fight, the Navy's kind enough to give them a ride."

It's funny reading what a lot of you who are not even in the military say about us. You truly have no idea about what it's like. I've been in for almost six years now and it's fun. It's definitely an adventure, getting to globe trot and shuttle our powerful Marine expeditionary forces around. (Yes we do give them rides, it's true lol.) Basically the Navy is a lifestyle. It is not really hard core and military when you get out to the fleet, it's actually more laid back and like a normal job except that you have rules and standards that you have to stay within, and wear a uniform. It's really not that bad at all. The Air Force claims they are more technical, but truth be known, they are nowhere near as operational as the Navy. The Navy is totally hands on, and if you don't use your skills to fix something at sea, the ship could be in trouble. Each job in the Navy has many different areas, and you can learn them all if you are so motivated to do so. I don't know if I will get out after this enlistment, but I can say that it has been a pretty good experience thus far.

I dont have any problem with any veterans in the NAVY current or past, these men and women are needed. Without the Navy most foot soldiers would not have any waterborn transportation and also no Navy air support, and not to mention the Navy has the toughest damn foot soldiers in the ENTIRE military...SEALS so i do give sailors a good bit of credit for the job they do. And by the way, Moosekarloff has nothing good to say about ANY of our men and women who are in uniform, so that little fag is a nay-saying puke.

This branch is almost as fag-intensive as the Marines, their brother force: the denial here is as intensive as among the leathernecks, and that's the sickening thing. Ever notice how many sexual terms of the gay experience have roots in nautical connotations? Meet you on the topside. Hoist me mizzenmast. In the hold. Swing my yardarm to the lee. Batten down the portholes. Walk the gangplank. Frigging in the rigging. Swab down the poopdeck. It's no coincidence that The Village People had a song called "In The Navy," an anthem that should have had a flipside (pardon the pun) entitled, "Leaving Your Best Buddy's Behind." The point is this: the military's condemning and intolerant attitude towards homosexuals is so hypocritical and disingenuous when you consider how many minty boys populate the services. Really, being gay does not preclude one from being a good soldier/sailor, and if someone wants to serve his/her country in the military, he/she should be able to so irrespective of his/her sexual identity/preference. But the military, being part of the government, doesn't get it, because essentially, the government doesn't get it. Never has.

Two of my best friends are Navy Seals. I see them as heroes. I would see them as heroes no matter what branch of the military they serve in. The Navy is valuable in many ways and I'm proud that the US has a strong force.
