Their path from slightly pretentious prog rock to shmaltzy pop kind of plays like the history of their era. Junior leaguers when they started out, way behind Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd, they eventually showed Phil Collins the way to success by aiming for easy hits even if it meant that the music sucked. Crime of the Century is still a listenable guilty pleasure provided its late at night, you are stoned and have good headphones so that no one will know what you are listening to.

I wouldn't consider them soft rock, but they're hard to categorize. Their music had depth and intelligence, so they are superior to hacks like Billy Joel and John Denver.

Generally I despise anything that smacks of prog and some of 'Tramp's output is clearly prog but at least never as bombastic and pretentious as Kansas, Rush, ELP, Yes etc. Then again some of their stuff is quality straightahead pop which is fine e.g. School, Dreamer, Take the long way home.

Not quite a soft rock group. Somewhat of a progressive band but more accessible. Breakfast In America is a very good album with some poignant songs about moving into adulthood. Other songs that I've heard from earlier work are good also but I've never heard the full albums.

Another one of my all time favorite groups with mostly a keyboard feel. A unique sound and though some of their songs were on the softer side, I do not consider Supertramp a soft rock group at all.

Supertramp began as a pure prog-rock band that had bamboozled a Dutch speculator to finance the group. After securing this support, the members promptly started living the high life, recording only when it was convenient. Not surprisingly, these early recordings were lackluster, the band's benefactor balked, and the group finally had to get down to business. The result was the impressive full-length "Crime Of The Century" (1974) and the singles "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." There is not a weak track on this release, and some critics labeled the effort as the "perfect" rock and roll recording. The follow-ups "Crisis? What Crisis?" (1975) and "Even In The Quietest Moments" (1977) were weaker and best sampled, but "Breakfast In America" (1979) provided the band's major breakthrough and was very accessible due to the huge popular hits (eg "The Logical Song" and "Take The Long Way Home"), but also provided some of their best deep cuts (eg "Oh Darling" and "Casual Conversations"). Post "Breakfast" the band's best efforts included the oft forgotten single "Cannonball." When all was said and done, Supertramp was one of the more successful prog-rock groups, though best explored via the compilation "The Very Best Of Supertramp" (1992), supplemented by "Crime" and "Breakfast."

Wrong category, again....Supertramp is NOT soft rock. I have all of their records and they still sound great (especially the digital remasters). They never got their due, in my opinion, despite the popularity of Breakfast in America.

Boring prog/pop stuff, with annoying falsetto vocals. That this group somehow became huge in the late 70's is something of a mystery.

Breakfast in America was one of my all time fav albums. Takes me down memory lane with any track from it.

Supertramp has one really awesome CD (Breakfast in America), and for that I'll give them 4 stars.

This band totally sucked. Well out of synch with what was going on during its heyday, and as a result, the music sounded retro when it was brand new. Pretentious and overproduced. They sang like The Chipmunks on drugs.

I'm only familiar with the album, "Breakfast In America". and a couple of other tunes outside the album, but other than that, it's hard to forget their catchy songs. Ironically, the Gap commercial where modern day pop singers are singing "Give A Little Bit". I thought that was cool. I love the song "Goodbye, Stranger"!

All of their songs sound the same. They are just a generic '70s "supergroup." It actually reaches the point of irritating to hear their music played on the radio along with other great music like the Beatles, Stones, Who, and Queen.

One of my all time favorites!

The band's best period of their career was from 1974-1983. This was when the musical partnership between vocalists/keyboard players Roger Hodgson & Rick Davies produced the 'true' sound of Supertramp over 5 successful albums including Crime Of The Century & Breakfast In America. After the departure of Hodgson (who had a great falsetto singing voice), the band's appeal was never the same.

Supertramp is one of the greatest bands of all time. My favourite songs are Hide in your Shell and Dreamer. Some people think that old time Rock isn't as "cool" as new POP music, but they're wrong. Most of the greatest songs written are in our past and I think that they're the ones written by these guys.
