If he could have gotten an earlier start or lasted a bit longer, he is an absoulute five star.

Holmes, with just 1 Super Bowl win, would have been a Hall of Famer. Any body who talks about "he's over rated because of the offensive line" needs to think of another back, Emmitt Smith. In the late 90's there was a huge push for a more "Fun and Gun" offense mentality in the league. The Kansas City Chiefs proved that you did not have to throw every down to have a dominant, high scoring offense. Sometimes a player comes into the right situation at the right time. Holmes did this and took it as far as he could. It's a shame that injuries have all but ended his brilliant 5 or 6 year stretch of brilliant running. Sweetness and Barry Sanders were the best, but Holmes was definately a top 25 back of all time in his "prime". That's saying a lot.

Some people call Holmes an average back... an average back that only happens to hold the single season touchdown record. In 2004 Holmes got 14 rushing touchdowns, good enough to rank third amongst running backs, trailing only Shaun Alexander (16) and LaDanian Tomlinson (17)... but he managed that in just 8 games. Holmes can get the same production as other marquee NFL rushers in half the time. If he had continued his pace, he would have easily broke the NFL record he himself set of 27 total touchdowns in a single season with an unthinkable 30 total TDs. The Chiefs line is awesome, but if you think it's all them, then you're mistaken. Some point specifically to a game against the Falcons when Priest got 4 touchdowns in the first half before tweaking his knee and sitting out. The doubters notice that his backup, Derrick Blaylock, managed to get 4 touchdowns in the second half. Blaylock got one touchdown when he was spelling for Priest in the first half, so Blaylock really had more of a 3 touchdown game and Priest had more of a 5 touchdown game... in the first half alone. Priest also had alot more yards than Blaylock and in less playing time. UPDATE: Okay, so now his biggest claim to fame, the TDs record is gone. For that matter, there's a good possibility he will retire. Still, I'm rating him as above average and I'll tell you why. First off, many people love to compare backs on bad o-lines and good o-lines that both do well and instantly assume the back with the bad o-line is better. That's honestly not necessarily the case. You see, a patient, intelligent back (Priest Holmes, Shaun Alexander) can get alot more out of a good o-line than a speedy, talented back (LaDanian Tomlinson, Tiki Barber). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure either Tiki or LT would thrive behind the Seahawks or Chiefs lines, it's just as you watch either Priest or Shaun Alexander you'll notice how patient they are and how they let their blocks develop. Larry Johnson in 2004 ran more like LT. He burst past his blockers and would get hit for his efforts. He still did pretty damn good, but in 2005 he became more patient and decisive when picking his holes. Patience is a virtue as a back and I think no runner demonstrated a better combination of field awareness, vision, and patience. I can admit he never was the most talented back, but to say he wasn't a great back is to lie.

this guy is the 2nd best runner if it weren't 4 LT i would pick him to line up in my backfield
GB4Life 05/11/2005
There is nothing really special about Holmes except for the fact that he's plays on a team with a very high powered offense weather he is in the game or not. He is just a product of the system. If he were on the cardinals, his number would blow.

One of the best ever at running the ball into the endzone. Some of his runs were amazing. Helps out younger players. Excellent physical conditioning.

most overrated player in football. tomlinson would get like 2500 yards with that line. hes at most an average back. hes slow, got the best line in football, he doesn't break tackles, he has no jukes or fakes. he runs foward until he gets tackled. look at larry johnson he got like 500 yards n 6 tds in like 4 games, n hes horrible. derrick blaylock got 4 tds in a half..n tied the record, u can't b serious calling him the best. u can stick anyone back therre n they'll get 1000 yards.
big_boy55 03/03/2005
best running back in football
Football genius 01/14/2005
He is very talented. take into consideration this: his o-line can make anyone atleast a 1,000 yrd rusher when healthy. look at how blaylock played when he got serious minutes this year(2004). now look at Larry Johnson. dont be surprised if KC makes a big trade that will surprise everyone

Reminds me of Marshal Falk back in 99-2001 - awesome!

Holmes is large and in charge again this season. He's looking like he may break his own single season touchdown record. Again he leads the NFL in rushing with all of his closes competitors still not having sat out their bi-weeks. Priest Holmes...you dah man!
clarkone68 09/14/2004
All he does is score touchdowns!

Great RB, yet vastly over rated. Greatest HB in the NFL is without a doubt Ladanian Tomlinson. I have seen this guy play and I have seen him turn corners like a mad man and I give him high praise for that. But over all he is more or less a product of the system running with arguably the best O-Line in the NFL. Calling him the most dominating back last year is just silly, Tomlinson owns that title
BeatlesfanStev eo 07/13/2004
He was the most dominating running back this year. He wasent expecytee to have great numbers considering the fact that his tea drafted a running back in the first round. i watched one of his playoff games and boy oh boy c an this guy move.
louiethe20th 06/10/2004
This guy is a guy who takes over games. The hip injury didn't slow him at all.
Jam032089 04/25/2004
Holmes is the best back in the league without a doubt. The chiefs made the playoffs, so they obviously dont suck.

NEW RECORD SETTER!

this priest keeps giving defenses around the league the last rites. i thought he was a flash in the pan, but he keeps compiling hall of fame stats.

He should be the poster boy for hard work and patience in the NFL. Holmes only had a lukewarm reception in Baltimore, where he shared time as the RB with several other players. I thought the guy looked like a good player but never in my wildest dreams did I think he would be the FORCE he is now. Some people says his success is due to the offensive line in KC and part of that may be true, but the rest comes from quality coaches on Vermeil's staff. Remember Marshall Faulk? He was considered middle of the road in Indy only to explode in St. Louis. It's not a coincidence that Vermeil was the Rams coach at the time. Still, that only means that Vermeil can recognize talent; the player still has to perform and that's what Holmes does week in and week out. A great football player.
Mark72481 09/29/2003
best rb
hrd2h8 06/18/2003
Is he really that good or just a product of a dominant line? I think a little of both.
TheMyth 04/11/2003
Different runningbacks excel in different offenses. Put Priest in with the Rams lineup or the Saints, would he be as succesful? Vermeil's game plan brings out the best in Priest. He's done an amazing job of shouldering this team on his shoulders. Now if they could find some recievers and a defense.....
2003 02/23/2003
Holmes is the best RUNNING BACK in the league, maybe 2nd to Ricky Williams, but Favre should be above him cuz he's a QB, and has been around longer.
Chunkmasterfat 02/14/2003
Priest Holmes is only second to Deuce Mcallister. he has great speed, agility, and its hard as diamonds to bring him down. The only thing thats keeping him back is his coach and team. Yeah spurrier was good at Florida. but the Chiefs suk!
jgswors 01/17/2003
great hard running back...walter payton he we come!

Been a fan of Priest ever since his first year on the Ravens. Amazing that he was never even drafted and is doing what he has done now. Fantasy Wonder.
