Gabrielle Brooks leaves her home of England to find her father, after her mother passes away. Along the way, the ship that Gabrielle is sailing on gets taken over by pirates. Gabrielle becomes a prisoner. Once on an island in the Caribbean, Gabrielle awaits her fate. Gabrielle catches the eye of pirate Pierre Lacross. He wants to make her his, but before he can do so, she is rescued by none other than her father.

Nathan loved his daughter very much but he also had a great love for the sea. He was able to keep his life as a pirate from his family till now. He wasn't prepared for Gabrielle to find out about him this way.

After three wonderful, fun-filled years sailing the high seas with her father, Gabrielle is sent back to England to settle down and find a husband. Nathan calls in a favor with an old friend, James Malory. James's lovely wife, Georgina is happy to have Gabrielle staying with them. In fact she has the perfect chaperone for Gabrielle...her brother sea captain, Drew Anderson.

Gabrielle is a free-spirited woman. She can command a ship with the best of the men. Though Drew is not Johnny Depp, he is still easy on the eyes. He knows just what a woman likes...in bed! It has been some time since I have read a romance novel and one written by Johanna Lindsey at that. Yes, I admit that I have read romances and plenty of them. Captive of My Desires is book eight of the Malory family. I can't recall if I have read any of the other books in this series but either way, you don't have to as this book as be read as a stand alone novel. I look forward to getting back into reading more great romance novels by Mrs. Lindsey.

I was quite pleased with this novel. I usually am with most of Lindsey's novels.
This novel is filled with excitement and romance. I found the story to be very enticing and it is a plus that it is a story about pirates, since I am a fan of pirate romances. There is a twist in this story, because usually when you deal with romances novels that are based around the heat of captivity, it is usually the female who is held captive, but this story doesn't exactly go that way. I think this is definitely a novel worth reading, so don't let the bad reviews stop you from pursuing this book.

If I could give this zero stars I would. This book has another obnoxious, abusive, selfish, self-centered rapist as a hero. He even offers to make amends for raping her by not turning her over to the police.

After raping her, he chains her to a wall after making sure he had taken away the ability to rescue her father.

I couldn't finish this book. I knew the heroine would forgive the rapist and I just wanted him dead.

Okay, background here. I was driving to and from Colorado, non-stop each way, for a wedding. At a rest stop I decided that I needed something to keep me occupied in the weary hours of the morning while the husband and kids were asleep. Found the only romance on audio that they had, and listened to it on the return drive. Imagine, if you will, that it's the hours between about 11 p.m. (when everyone fell asleep) and 5 a.m. (when my leg of the drive was over). Imagine also, that I can't recall ever reading any other Johanna Lyndsey books, so this is my first exposure to her work.

So, now, about the story. Wow. It was... hilarious. That's why I gave it 2 stars instead of one. This was hilarious in the way that Mystery Science Theater is, as you can have so much fun making fun of this book. Part of it, I admit, would not be the author's fault. I had never listened to a romance novel on audio before, and there is something incredibly funny about a woman trying to speak the "sensual" or "erotic" dialogue of a man. It just didn't work. Gabrielle's character sounded like a 12 year old girl, and Drew sounded like a very angry, possibly constipated, grandpa. Now put the two of them in a sex scene, and you can see my humorous reaction.

As I mentioned, though, that is not the fault of the author. What IS the fault of the author, however, is the actual story and dialogue that the poor woman was trying to give voice to. Because I was listening to it "unfold", it was very easy to see that there was no obvious reason for Drew and Gabby to like each other, other than mutual attraction. There was certainly nothing that brought it to the level of love. It was also much easier to see just how stilted, stunted, and absurd the dialogue and interactions were. By the time we got to "You stole my virginity", I was literally smacking my forehead at the absurdity. (Shamefully, I woke my husband up. I felt bad. But it didn't stop my from doing it again, after the THIRD TIME she said it!)

Everything was just so... trite. So absurd. So overdone and stereotypical. It was laughable, which is not usually what I prefer my romance novels to be. It was, however, a nice diversion on a 25 hour drive. I can't complain too much about that -- hence the 2 star rating. If you must read/listen to this, make sure you get it CHEAP, as that's all it's good for -- a few cheap laughs (and head smackings, which hurt like the dickens the 6, 8, 10th times you do it).

This was so disappointing. Praises to the higher powers that I didn't buy this in hardcover.

I think most people who read this book had read previous Malory novels so bought this hoping for a sweeping romance, a la Gentle Rogue. This is not that book.

Drew Anderson is a jerk. I can't stand the man who looks down on anyone due to their circumstances and Drew does that from the moment he meets Gabrielle. He hears the word "pirate" and "Gabrielle" in one sentence and condemns her as one of their barbarous, whoring breed and doesn't hide his contempt either. Nor does he feel the need to mince words when in the company of other people, because, well, who cares right? She's a promiscuous pirate who doesn't have feelings. Nevermind the moment he sees her, he decides he must have her. Nevermind the fact that she tells him no, she's looking for a husband and if that's not what he's okay with, then leave her alone. Nope, our hero (and I use that term loosely and with digust) desires her fiercely and won't take no for an answer and in a moment of drunkenness spills her secrets at a ton party. When Gabrielle confronts Drew about this, he is far from repentant. (This is where Johanna Lindsey lost me. If she had made him contrite, even just a little, I might have forgiven her and Drew) Oh, no, this is where our caustic hero tells his heroine that her husband searching was "too far above her station" and her mother's honor and reputation was not of his concern since her association with her pirate husband should have been avoided at all costs and well, what can you expect when you marry a pirate? I guess he forgot that his beloved sister Georgie married an ex pirate, and he would probably kill anyone who said the same thing to her.

Gabrielle and Drew have no chemistry together and their 'romance' comes across as forced and unbelievable. I enjoyed reading more about Drew's righthand man and a few assorted background characters then the man himself. One of the funniest parts of the book doesn't even involve Drew, but James and Gabrielle and Richard, the man who is trying to trespass with James' wife, George. LOL. Run Richard, Run!

Up until the moment Gabrielle returned to England, I was really enjoying the book. Her character's introduction in the Caribbean was interesting and her reunion with her father was funny. I shamelessly love these 'captive at sea' type books and for a moment I thought I had found another Johanna Lindsey gem, but she quickly proved me wrong.

This book was disappointing to read and I somewhat blame myself. I snatched up this book solely on the fact she smacked 'A Malory Novel' on the cover and all I could think of was, "OOooo, a Malory novel. Drool". I guess I hate acknowledging that I'm a mindless sheep sometimes. LOL

Hopefully next time she will realize that while I love the Malorys and love revisiting them from time to time, this shouldn't be about them. This is the Anderson family and she is missing an opportunity to create a whole new quirky bunch of people with a distinctly American flair to it. Oh well, Johanna, a swing and a miss.
