Kind of stupid in a way, but also nothing to take too seriously- cheesy fun with "Gene Gene the Dancing Machine" and so on. They'd have someone come out in a gorilla suit and roller disco and things of that nature. Pretty silly, rag on the 70's all you want, but at least Gong Show had no Paris Hilton or Screech...

Entertaining to see people make complete fools of themselves, but pretty silly show.

American Idol doesn't hold a candle to this classic show. What a great show all around. This could be back on TV and a big hit if they revivied it properly.

Gene, Gene, the Dancin' Machine

With the recent re-advent of "reality TV", it's safe to say that The Gong Show was several years ahead of its time. That, plus the fact that Chuck Barris was/is an eccentric genius (he practically invented syndicated TV), and you begin to understand why this show was lambasted by critics. I just wish reruns were easier to come by.

Remember the Gong show from the 1970s. I would give it an average of a 2.5. A three because sometimes they really would have some talented contestants.and other times just flat out strange that could be funny. Otherwise I would give this lower just because it is so mean sprited. someone comes on thinking they have talent and they get to be humiliated on national tv., if a "celebrity" does not like them.they GONG them.If the constestant can make it through his/her act without being gonged,they still have to be rated by the three "celebrities" getting from a 1-10. the winner would get some kind of prize.who wants that kind of humiliation.?
