In April we bought a Liberty that was about 2 years old and relatively low mileage. I love how it handles and it is very comfortable. Unfortunately, it gets absolutely horrible gas mileage. Aslo, we ran into two major repairs ($1700) before we had had it even 6 months. We're going to get rid of it and find something a little more economical....and reliable.

I've been driving Jeeps since the late 1980s, two Cherokees and a Grand Cherokee, to be specific. But, I put 3200 miles on my 2007 Liberty before getting rid of it. I found the engine to be peppy, the handling tight, and no major, or even minor, flaws with the vehicle itself. The gas mileage is, however, terrible.

I had traded my 2000 Grand Cherokee for the Liberty, being prepared to sacrifice the ride, room, and comfort for better mileage. As it turned out, I sacrificed ride, room, and comfort for nothing. I traded the Liberty in for a 2007 Grand Cherokee, and already have seen a 2 MPG increase in mileage during in-town driving.

Skip the Liberty, get the Grand Cherokee, a far, far better automobile.

I have 06' JEEP Liberty, and I never had smooth drive, all driving is bumpy, noicy(like an airplane noice) and breaks are poor, and wheel pulling one side on curve roads and when I goto Dealer and tell all threse problems, he just say one word that "thats the way JEEP works", it is not good, I never buy jeep again.

I purchased my new Liberty in 04. The ride is loud and not as comfy as my full size JMC. But I have to honestly say, I am impressed with this Jeep. The 3.7 is crisp and responsive, while the steering is very agile. Until now at 60,000 miles, I have never had a complaint with this product. Presently I will be taking my jeep in to have the engine light looked at. Guessing something simple. Engine is still strong with routine oil changes every 5k. The wife,kids, and dog love it. I myself, have been driving 4x4s and sport cars since day one, in my humble opinion, nothing beats the JEEPs size, width, stock torque, and 4x4 system. Not even my highly tooted GMC! Its everything a "real" SUV was meant to be. This engine light, being my only problem, I would most likely purchase again.

Jeep Liberty 2006 Limited

I notice consistently a rough running engine at low RPM under a load. One dealer told me the computer has the mixtured leaned so far back that low rpm pulling on the hills causes not a miss but a sligh rough condition. Another dealer said that there haven't been any complaints logged at Detroit. I think that the "flat lands" drivers won't notice it. I live in eastern Ohio where we have hills.

As you approach a grade, the rpm's lower then comes the rough running followed by a downshift of the transmission obviously giving up on the pull.

What a shame that the power curve and torque at the low end can't be utilized.

Three visits to the dealers and basically I was told "that's the way it is".

I didn't even get any response when I documented this complaint on my post purchase survey.

They don't care so neither do I; that is I don't care to buy another Jeep ever.

Anyone else got this problem?

Anyone know where I can find a performance tuner for the computer that would give me some tuning abilities?

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty with 21,000 miles on it, I drive from home to daycare and then to work. Mostly highway driving. I started to hear grunting and my husband brought the car in to be checked, he was told that we need new brakes for the front and new brakes and rooters for the back. Give me a break! 21k miles and I need new rooters and brakes, what is that? We purchased this car new Dec of 05. I noticed that people have had similar problems with the liberty but I noticed they were prior to 05. Has anyone had this problem with their 05?
I will NEVER purchase another Jeep product! I will be calling Jeep on Monday to express my frustrations.
Would love to know if there is anyone else with these same problems.

I have an 04 Libety Sport 3.7L 4x4. Anybody else have any trouble with downshifting? Sometimes when I downshift it feels like someone just hit me from behind, the Jeep bumps forward like it's being pushed. Any thoughts? My warrantee is expired and my dealer has no idea what I'm talking about. Otherwise it's been a good vehicle.

2002 Jeep Liberty has had nothing but problems! Pulls to the right, whole Jeep Shakes, Bad upper/lower ball joints replaced twice, inside door & window weather stripping fell off, Paint on whole jeep peeling.

Don'T buy one!

Steering Failure. Loss total control of vehicle. Could result in major injury or fatality. Dealer replaced entire steering rack and did not cover it my warranty or defect. Serious issue. Any question feel free to call Joe 401-588-2234

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty with 22,800 miles on it and I have the same problem with my brakes as an earlier person. The right and left rear calipers locked up and the wheels were smoking when I drove it to a nearby Pep Boys, who identified the problem and fixed it quickly. When I contacted Jeep, who I feel put my family's safety at risk with this defect, said they wern't responsible for any repairs not done at the dealer and thanked me for the information. This WAS my third Jeep, but I will never ever buy thrie product again! If you have brake problems as well, let's start a recall. I won't even let my wife drive this now for fear that the car will catch on fire. Disgusted

FROM THAT POINT ON IT WAS DOWN HILL. IN FACT IT WAS A MUD SLIDE, LIKE THEY ARE THE SPIDER AND YOUUR CAUGHT IN THERE WEB. I CHANGED DEALLERS FOR SERVICE. THEY TOLD I NEEDED A SPARK PLUG CHANGE (6) PLUS A PVC VALVE, VALUE $234.00 + TAX. I CALLED MY LOCAL FIRESTONE REPAIR SHOP SAME JOB, $ 90.00 + TAX. WHAT'S WRONG WIITH THIS PICTURE. I'M GOING BACK TO FOREIGN.

I got my 2004 Sport liberty brand new from the dealer and I purchased an extended warranty up to 75,000 miles or 7 years. My commute is short but it is the family SUV since we tow with it a 17ft In-Board/Out-board fishing boat and we feel quite comfortable and secure. I have only put 14,000 miles on 1.5 year since I purchase it and still like new, we love it. When you buy Jeep you need to remember that they are not a race cars or the must economic gas/miles vehicle, they are powerful big engine built primarily for Off-road. If you want gas/miles buy a Hybrid or electric, if you want speed get a Mustang or BMW, if you want comfort get a Cadillac, but if you want a true American SUV and the best on the market, get JEEP

I have 2003 Liberty - with 38,600 miles in the shop - fuel injectors shot reair/replacement cost $1500. After reading about others brake problems I think I am facing more upcoming problems. I will be getting rid of this car - I bought it for dependabilty and I don't feel I can depend on it now. I Will NEVER buy another Jeep

My Jeep story: I have 2003 Renegade with the top lights, running boards, charcoal wheels, etc and color black. It's worked out really good. I haul my german shepherd around in it, go to the carolina mountains. It has a lot more head room then the 2002 Cherokee, no comparison. The new Laredo has less headroom so I didn't trade it in. It now has 78,500 miles and I have run the hell out of it. I just changed the plugs on it for the first time as preventive maintenance going into winter. I have now replaced all 4 tires within the last 5k miles. I still have original brakes on all wheels and they still have a lot of pad left. I also had a few floating incidents in the rain but I sort of did it on purpose. Put it in part time 4 wheel drive if you are worried about hydroplaning.

I own a 2004 Renegade, bought it new. This vehicle handles great in the snow and mud. Light bar is very helpful when wheelin at night. Horsepower is great, considering the class comparisons. The interior gives you the look of a wrangler with the comfort of a Larado. Factory skid plates have also come in very helpful except when it comes time to remove the oil filter, however, a K&N oil filter with the nut will fix that problem. Brakes are very poor, perhaps the worst on any vehicle i have ever owned. The rotors are warped/glazed and pads down to about 25% life after only 12,000 miles. It also seems to have a vibration in the power train, Jeep can't seem to correct the problem. It has a locking torque converter which is good for gas milage on the high way, but in the mountians of PA, it seems to be shifting from 4th to 3rd and vice-versa all the time. All around this is a solid vehicle. A great choice if you are considering a escape xterra as i was. The vehicle is also very modable. A simple addition of a K&N cold air, helix power tower throttle body spacer, and Borla duel exhaust really open up that motor and give a V8 sound with the gas milage of a V6. There are also a wide variety of lifts, aftermarket skids (if you don't get the renegade package), bumpers, winches, and other offroading equipment. The handling of this vehicle is debatable. I have owned several late model mustangs before my liberty, and I must say that it doesn't compare. However, for a suv with the short wheel base, it does quite well when under the rights. THis is a great choice for a dad who loves the adventure of a jeep, but has problems putting a car seat in his wrangler. And for the younger crowd, like myself, makes a great party vehicle for you and your friends. I would definatly purchase another renegade and plan on doing so in 3 years.

Jeep doesn't build anything that doesn't have muscle where it counts. The body shape takes a little getting sued to, though. :)

It took awhile for the Liberty to grow on me, as far as the design. They preform as well on the trails as the Wranglers. Of course, what else could I exspect from Jeep. That's what they design. 4x4's.

Read several posts re: brakes. Only have 27.000 miles on my 03 liberty sport, 4 cyl, 5 speed. Severy months ago started hearing grunting and groaning when hitting the brakes. Dealer said that was normal because we live on a gravel road. It would wear off with driving. Have '88 Commanche and 99 Cherokee and they never had a problem with gravel roads. Since then have had the left rear wheel get so hot there was smoke and really bad burning smell. Had brake pads replaced. Just a stick they said. Then got stranded as I refused to drive it when the wheel got hot again. Had to have it towed to the closest dealer, not where we bought it. Bad caliper. Asked them to check right rear as it was clunking also. They said at this time all is working and we test drove it Pulling out of the dealer parking lot, the groaning was there when you hit the brakes. Monday, it goes in to the dealer where we bought it. Please, let there be a kind and merciful god that our dealer will fix it, as I really like this jeep, but cannot tolerate an undependable vehicle. I commute from a very rural area to town for work (50+ miles one way) I cannot keep driving it while watching out my sideview mirrors just waiting for the wheels to start smoking. I have enough trouble watching for all the deer! If anybody has had similar problems, please let me know and maybe it will help when I take it in to be fixed. Thanks!!!

My jeep liberty has run great, EXCEPT for the brakes and rotors wearing down and grinding after every 8,000 miles. Several different Jeep dealerships have told me that this is normal and I should not be concerned, except that jeep charges over $350 fix it every time. Other than that, no problems YET.

I have had my 'o2 Liberty for almost 2 years. Every 6,000 MILES I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES AND ROTORS (over $300 at jeep). Jeep had no idea what the problem was until my warrenty expired, then they figured it out very quickly and wanted to charge over $1000 to fix it.*****DO NOT BUY A JEEP*****

I've had my jeep for 2 years. It's been a mess. Every 10,000 miles the engine light comes on and they have to replace the spark plugs. Every 20,000 miles they also have to replace the Crankshaft sensor. This jeep is a 5 speed. I have always had manual transmissions on my honda, toyota and mitubishi and never had a crankshaft sensor replaced on any of them. I didn't know that part existed. The toyota went for 250,000 miles and the honda 150,000 and the mitsubishi went for 130,000. The jeep has had to have it's crankshaft replaced TWICE already (and I had only gone 40,000 miles) After 30,000 miles, of course, the waranty expired. (that was $1000). Now at 49,000 (and no off road driving) the seals on my rear brakes went out, so oil soaked through the brake pads - that's another $600. My brake seals NEVER went out on any of my other vehicles. Those problems along with the poor gas mileage, I would NOT buy a jeep. (Though maybe I shouldn't have submitted the review until after I was able to sell it!) I DO NOT recommend buying a jeep - EVER.

I have a 2002 Liberty sport that has been ok until my engine light came on and my speedometer stopped working at 50k miles. The engine light is still on and the speeedometer still isn't working after replacing the transmission control module and speed sensor. I will never buy another domestic vehicle again. Ironically, this is happening after the warranty has expired. I am trading the jeep after the problem is corrected. This will be the most I have spent on repairs for the jeep than my 2 Hondas in 10 years. I do not recommend this vehicle.

I'd like to give my 2004 Jeep Liberty a 5star rating, but during my first 2800 miles of driving I've had it quit on me 3 times and had to have it towed in to be repaired. they put a band aid on it and sent it back to me saying they really don't know what is wrong with it, but hope it is fixed. It's in the shop again now. same problem. It just conks out. Great for a 68 year old handicapped driver.

I own a 2002 Jeep libert 3.7 liter 5 speed. Fit and finish are excellent. At 75 MPH on long trips it gets 23 MPG. Towing my 5 X 10 trailer loaded at 65 MPH it gets 17 MPG. What a bargain. you can't beat it for value, ecomony(considering the engine size), and overall versatility

I have had the Liberty for two years. I love the was it handles, especially in heavy snow. It has a lot of torque, but the horsepower could be increased to improve highway performance. It has a surprisingly comfortable ride on long trips, the only thing I would change is lumbar support in the driver and front passenger seats. P.S. Great warranty!

It is a solid 4X4. I love every thing about it except it gets poor gas milage. It is comfortable to ride in and I have had a broken back. I like this better than my old Pathfinder. The fit and finish on my Jeep is perfect. And my dealer service is excellent. I rate this a 4-1/2. Like I said gas milage is my only complaint

This is our 3rd Jeep. We still have Jeep #2 Cherekee Sport 1999. So I thought it would be neat to have the new model Jeep, the Liberty, so we bought it back in Oct. 2002. My main concern about the Jeep is that is "spins" out of control easily, even when driving slowly on relatively gentle curves, on barely wet road surface, unless you have it in 4-wheel drive. This can be a scary experience. I ALWAYS put it in 4-wheel regardless of the season if the roads are wet AT ALL! I don't know how this can be improved upon, unless they lower the chassis closer to the groung...otherwise I like it alot...don't know if I will keep it after the lease is up..I may really look around at the SUV market and not purchase or lease a vehicle simecause it has the JEEP name.

This ones mixed. Its much much better than the Wrangler. It can still go off road and is more comfortable than the Wrangler. Still, Jeep reliability has been horrid. Reliability for the Liberty is still unkown, which is why Im not reccommending it.

My sister has a 2002 Jepp Liberty, and she had a terrible accident the other day. The rear axle broke and the back tire flew off of the vehicle. She could have easily been killed had anyone been on the road near her. We are in the process of getting an attorney to help settle this matter.

We've owned this for 8 months and LOVE it. There's not been a single problem with it. The gas milage is 16 around town and 22 on the highway and that's ok considering it's a solid, heavy duty vehicle. The acceleration is very good. The interior on the sport is fine. The seats are very comfortable and the car is very quiet. There's a very solid tight feel that gives the impression it will last for ever. We take this on frequent excursions of 7 to 8 hours and find it very good for long trips. After the hard winter we had in NY I can tell you that in the snow this is a tank. It seems unstoppable. I drive a big 3/4 ton Dodge 4WD pickup on my job and this little SUV will go places the dodge won't go. It seems that the people who rated this vehicle low don't even own one but have some kind of grudge against Jeep or something. The people who really own one rate it high. I recommend this vehicle highly.

As an owner of Jeep products since 1992...I must have received at least 25 recalls. Do yourself a favour and buy Ford or GM . I have a 2002 Ford Explorer now and it is GREAT. The Jeep looks nice to others as you drive it back and forth to the dealer for repairs. Thats where I put on all the mileage on my Jeeps.

My wife and I both own his and hers 2002 Jeep Liberties. I have 22,000 miles on mine,she has 13,000 miles on hers. We have not had any problems with either one. These vehicles are well built and solid. They will go anywhere. My liberty tows my bass boat better that my Ford F150 pickuptruck did. I can hardly tell that I am towing a boat. The only complaint that I have is that the gas mileage is not the best. You can not go wrong for the price of this vehicle. a Ford Escape does not come close to what this vehicle can do. The Xterra needs to be turbocharged to get the same power as the Jeep.

There is absolutely nothing better on the market in this price range with this quality of construction, fit and finish, great handling and level of features that can actually handle real off-road conditions with excellent on-road finesse. Very reliable, quiet drive. Selectrac is awesome. DC has a real winner here!

Funny looking from the front. During my test drive it drove OK, a little 'busy'. Jeep has a very poor track record with reliability as with the Grand Cheroke. I would be very wary of a first year model. Doesn't compare to the Toyota Highlander for fit and finish......

Had A chevy avalanch loaded very nice but $38750 I Think My jeep Liberty Was A better value. Like how it handles and is very fun to drive.

Have owned one for 6 months and absolutely LOVE it! The ride is great, the inside looks very classy, and it just looks really cool too. The only bad part is the gas mileage - 16-18MPG, but it is a V6. Anyway, it is a great entry level SUV!!

I did test drive this vehicle and was not impressed. I thought the fit and finish was poor. I had a 1998 Jeep GC (my wife's) coming off lease that was the truck from hell. Trany problems, front brake pads changed every 6,000 miles, rear end problems and on and on...... I then find out there are many other owners with the same problems. Problems that Jeep refuses to correct. I can't tell you how much time I wasted arguing to get repairs under warranty done, time waiting for parts and time for the repairs to be corrected. Never again. As for the Liberty, it had the same 'feel' to it as the GC. Cheap. I decided on the Toyota Highlander. From the extensive homework I've done it should be a great vehicle. I love the look and feel of this truck and it's priced very reasonable.

Love the Liberty. Like the look and feel and am happy to be back in a Jeep (I know not very scientific). Traded a Nissan Exterra for the Liberty. Liberty appears to have more usable power for the auto trans but is lacking in rear cargo dept. Since it is just my son and I this is not a problem but could be for families looking for car to travel in. Steering feels more precise with a smaller turning radius (rack and pinion?) with a stiffer suspension. We do car camping over some rough trails and use 4wd often - the two feel equal in this area. Height is same although the side rails on Xterra really helped when loading the mtn bikes - side rails are in the future. Front and back seats are an improvement - better visability/higher profile in the front while rear seat has more room. Undecided (have yet to ride in back of Liberty) about role of stadium seating in rear of Xterra although I did like this when i had to ride in back - less motion sickness. Overall, I do not regret my decision to buy the Liberty (in fact I am estatic); however, each person must decide what is best for them. Both SUV's have many pluses.

Test drove one yesterday. Lots of strange noises around the dash area. Jeep's history of fit and finish are poor and seem to be the same with this vehicle. Why anyone would take a chance on buying a first model year Jeep product is beyond me. Check out edmunds.com They already have a thread in town hall called 'problems with Jeep Liberty'. The darn thing has only been out a couple of months. Shop smart.

I think this suv is a great on-road and off-road vehicle! Very comfortable ride just going to the grocery stores and the mall but really kicks ass when off-roading. Crawls on big rocks and bumpy mountainside rain or shine. Awesome performance! Jeep makes real off-road vehicles...you know, the real suvs. The others...well, sad to say, they're really just cars.

The ride is great and it four wheels like a champ. Awesome vehicle! The engine is VERY responsive and handling is great. The Goodyear Wranglers on the aluminum wheels hold the road very nice. There is almost no body roll on turns. The feel is heavy and tight. You get a good feel for the road.

Great suv! Test drove one last weekend. Very solid feel when driving. Slick design.

I just bought a silver Jeep Liberty Limited Edition on the 22nd of June. The interior and exterior is awesome! It drives really quiet and very solid. I'm very happy I bought it! :D

This is a cool looking little vehicle! I saw one for the first time about 2 wks ago and thought it was awesome. I have not drove on, but it sure looks like a lot of fun. I am giving it 5 stars just for looks alone.

I've been shopping around for mini-mid SUV's for a few months now. Looked at Rav4, CRV, Chevy ($$), and the Ford Escape. I'm specifcally looking for something w/ 4 doors for family and freinds as well as something that can tow and haul things for camping and recreation in the mountains. The "Liberty" (Cherokee replacment) seems to have it all at a resonable price (loaded around 26K). The interior is roomy, "styly," and the motor is the biggest I've seen in this class (3.7L, 210hp) and can tow more than any other as well. The 2nd day they were out I ran into people at the "Jeep Store" who had been looking at the same vehicles I have and they were ALL picking up a Liberty. The only common grip is the window controls are on the center console instead of the door (only reson a 4 vice 5 star rating). It has been a dillema btwn the Escape and the Liberty for me, but after numerous cold shoulders, lack for my concern, desire for my money from the Ford people, I think I'm taking my business to the Jeep folks and picking one of these Liberty's up.
