Whilst Lancaster Uni isn't perfect, I'd challenge anyone to find a place that is.The campus is undergoing permanent regeneration with some very modern and green buildings replacing the once concrete dominated area. That said, the concrete is a pretty large part of the university structure but I think they are overcoming any eye-sore related issues that causes with lots of green spaces and ponds etc. Plus, it is quite good at providing the things you will need like food outlets, mini-markets like Spar, book shops/fairs, banks and even a cinema. Plus, it is quite pretty in the sunshine when the grass and Alex Sq is covered in students hanging out and having fun!The departments don't always talk to each other and the residence officers can sometimes come across as though having students there is an inconvenience. However, the courses I have taken have been good and some have sparked entirely new interest areas for me. You do have to work if you want a decent classification although there is a "you only have to pass" approach by many first years as I've noticed elsewhere.I personally love the town with the stone buildings and mix of high street shops and quirky one-off boutiques. There are clubs, bars and restaurants a plenty and you can usually find somewhere with good offers on to keep a night out relatively cheap. For those seeking something larger, Manchester, Blackpool and Preston are all easily to reach by bus/train.I've not noticed any sort of 'bully culture' as it seems friendly and inclusive. There are around 14,000 students at the university so through courses/colleges/societies/sports, everyone should be able to find people they enjoy spending time with. :)

Visited Lancaster uni and Lancaster itself, applying to go next year and to be honest, can't wait. There might not be a lot to do except get drunk but what is there to do at any other universities apart from get drunk?... Yes, there's a lot of concrete but you'd find that at any city university, just because Lancaster is a campus, people expect it to be all green scenery. Why is Lancaster so different. Know 3 people very well who went/go there and love it. Obviously it's just a matter of opinion, there must be something good about it if so many people like it. PS. it might be always raining but I don't think that's just at Lancaster University, I think that's pretty much the UK...

Was part of the 2006/2007 MBA class. Lancaster is an opportunity to go to an isolated place and reflect on yourself. Its a trip into your personality and it will only change and underline what you bring with you to Lancaster. It does not necessarily add stuff or ideas. Its not a creative place in my perspective. The lake district is near and its an opportunity to experience on of the nicest areas in the UK. Lancaster is kind of meaningless and pretty neutral - do not expect too much. The MBA is challenging in terms of your personality and the quantity of workload. Not the quality! It was a great experience for me - a primer in change.

I like the courses at the moment and I love the friendly rivalry in the collegiate system, I just don't like how the University likes to rip its students off at every opportunity,as well as this Lancaster is full of chavs, I keep telling people this and people say things like, "yeh, but there are a lot more in places such as manchester" maybe it's because the population is so small they are just more recogniseable. Having said all of this I have some good friends here including my girlfriend so we make the most of it and have a good laugh whilst getting 5* lecturing.

My experience here was awful, I should perhaps point out that I am a mature student and a transsexual. I already have a more minor professional qualification, I went to study the BA (Hons.) Theatre Studies. First experience is part of ttranssexual given to a hetero person - suitable parts for TS's are hard to come by. Felt like hell, but tried to continue. Bullied then by a significant but small group, the vital point is that absolutely nothing was done to try to help with or stop the bullying - I was just a nuisance. Continued as long as I could but after a time (I was there over a year) it became so intrusive I felt it would affect my results so I had no choice but to leave. I have heard that this university has the worst suicide rate in the country - I can see why! How many young innocent lives have been lost through the "mob rules" "public school gang" culture there?

ok you want my opinion, yes the city of lancaster isnt exactly the best, but then compared to places like manchester and london where is. It is an amzing uni with relaly lovely people. and the person talking of chavs seriously hasnt been around much. from where im from in east anglia chavs run free everywhere, their just people anyway. Coming from cambridge its students that bug me most, but being one i cant really complain.I feel lancaster has everything any student could need, and i think people should consider themselves lucky, we pay nothing for drinks up here compared to down south. its great! oh and for this suicide rate thing, the only reason that lancaster had one of the highest is because it is campus based, if a student kills themself in their room or on campus it is considered the unis fault, however at other uni's where accomodation isnt situated on campus, if someone does comit suicide they will not class this as the unis fault. hence why lancaster is high

I graduated from Lancaster in 2004 and I totally agree with EVERYONE. It's both a great place and a complete ****hole. My first year at Lancaster was easily the best year I have ever had. There are 9 bars on campus (although you'll probably never go to Graduate Bar) and the campus is like a small town so you never really need to leave, which is good, because you wouldn't want to. The courses were fairy easy, in fact provided you can remember what course you're on you're pretty much guaranteed to leave with a degree. The problem is, come your second year, they kick you out into the city of Lancaster. The problem with Lancaster itself is that it's possibly the worst place in the entire world. On the outside you think, hey, this place looks alright. Look, there's loads of bars, ooh, a couple of clubs, and a Sainsbury's. This doesn't seem like a bad place to live for three years. The problem is that THAT'S ALL THERE IS! The typical night in Lancaster involves drinking so much that you think that going to the Sugarhouse is a good idea, and then you go to the Sugarhouse, which it turns out to not be a good idea at all. Well, not unless you like hearing the same unbelievably bad music mixed with the same five 80's songs every time you go, being absolutely freezing, standing knee deep in piss and drinking warm, out of date alcopops on special offer. Of course you can go to Liquid, but only on a Monday - student nights can be alright but any other day of the week and it's full of chavs. Yes, Lancaster itself is a chav stronghold. Anyone who isn't a student is almost certainly bound to be a chav, which rules out a lot of places that students actually go on a night out. There's basically only the Friary that's a cert to go to; there's no chavs there and the booze is cheap, and actually it's a pretty damn good place. But the chavs, they are EVERYWHERE. You'll live next door to chavs, you'll get served by chavs, you'll get nearly run over by chavs, you'll get mugged by chavs, and you'll almost certainly not go in there, it's full of chavs. Anyone on here who says that Lancaster is a great place is a chav. So, go for the first year then leave and go to a better run university. Unless of course you're a chav, in which case get some bling and burberry on, get in your pimped-out ride and go to Lancaster! It's chavtastic!

Lancaster university is poorly run and is an eyesore. The administration of the university is operated by too many departments, most of which poorly communicate with each other. If you live on campus and have a problem it can take a long time to sort it out due to inefficiency. The accommodation is substandard. We have 30+ guys sharing 3 toilets on my floor... The 60's concrete and lack of colour is very oppressive.

Lancaster University is one of the top 10 universities in the UK. It is a unique research led universities with many high tech centres such as the InfoLab21, which is deemed to be one of the top in Europe, along many research led centres in the management school. Building on its 5 departments, Lancaster university prides itself to have one of only two business schools to get the coveted 6* ranking. As well it achieved the EQUIS and AMBA accreditation and now has proceeded with the AACSB accreditation. The business school has unique programmes and has merged with top business schools in different continents to launch an international masters programme. Merge was done with the following top schools: INSEAD, McGill. The Management School has been awarded 9.5 million funding to extend the School's building with a new state-of-the-art Lancaster Leadership Centre. The funds have been made available from the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) who pledged 4.5 million, with a further 5 million from Lancaster University. The new facility will boast two additional 'Harvard style' lecture theatres, be host to the Lancaster Leadership Centre, have several dedicated high-spec group work areas and an impressive Hub where executive teaching and events can take place. The Lancaster Leadership Centre will provide a focus for outreach provision across the northwest region.

Excellent research and teaching eventhough the buildings can sometimes be a little depressing. Thats changing right now with massive building projects for several departments (including business).

I believe that a person who rates Lancaster University as low as one star has a personal problem in assessing a great university. I deem that a university with a 6* ranking and a top international ranking and reputation should never get less than 5 stars.

Please. I don't know what people are on who gave Lancaster 5 stars. I suspect the marketing people are busy doing their job! They certainly spend a lot of time promoting the management school. In reality, Lancaster is a large depressing concrete university with one of the highest suicide rates in the country. It rains all the time, is expensive, and there is nothing to do besides get drunk. The faculty spend far more time researching and in my experience really hate teaching. Foreign students apleanty, but rarely do they mix outside small cliques. just look at the other comments; funny how two mention '22 nationalities' in their class...sounds just like something taken from one of lancaster's marketing catalogues...at least visit the place to see for yourself before you come here.

5 Star rating for a 5 Star school! Lancaster is one of the world's best kept secrets- great teaching, diverse and interesting students (high international bias and a good gender mix), a small cohort which allows great networking and socialising, a dedicated and friendly support staff, all set in a beautiful country setting. What more could you ask for! Students apply theories that are unique to Lancaster which go far beyond the standard practise of "apply a model and everything will be alright", an approach that is not appropriate for the modern world. Great course and great value for money!

I’m currently one of 76 MBA Students in Lancaster University, one of England’s best Business School in Research and Teaching – by the way, we’ll get the rest as well, don’t worry -. It is amazing studying in a class with 22 different nationalities, being thought with complete relevance to practice, in a real nice environment with a lot of pretty cool students. I have to say that I’m highly impressed with Lancaster University, the students and their quality of skills; it is definitely a good investment in your future.

Everything I anticipated and more from this 5-star rated management school. I highly recommend the MBA programme as being a 'top quality' and 'great value for money' course. I am proud to say that I am studying at LUMS.

I am currently a MBA student at Lancaster University. As an American I had an ample number of MBA programmes with which to apply, but Lancaster University in the north of England is where I found my home. The Lancaster MBA has a five star rating for research excellence and this research excellence is transfered into the quality of teaching at Lancaster. The program is one year long and has opportunities for international exchanges, management consultancy projects, and top corporate and EU guest lecturers. Our current MBA class of 75 is a friendly and diverse group from 22 home countries around the world. If you want a top MBA programme that is up and coming on corporations' recruitment list, look at Lancaster and see if it is the place for you.
