Moulin Rouge 3

I liked Moulin Rouge better than I thought I would. this is a multi-category movie. It can be a comedy, a musical, romance, and drama. the movie takes place in 1899 in Moulin Rouge, SAtine is the main entertainer at the Moulin rouge and she is also a prostitute.Ewan McGregors character is a writer who just came to town and is hired as a writer for the Moulin rouge to write a play.He quickly falls in love with SAtine. Of course there is a bad guy who is rich and wants Satine for himself. to add to the plot Satine is also dying. What is kind of neat is it takes place in 1899 yet the music is songs from the 1940s throught 1990s. so you hear Lady Marmalade, Diamonds are a Girls best friend, and Nature boy etc. It has sad ending. the actors are all good. This is an unusual unique movie. I must admit after seeing it a few months ago, i like it less than i did. some of it is annoying. i do not hate it but this is one of the movies I like less after seeing it again.

I couldn't have said more bad things about this movie. I don't know if I should be excited now to have this chance to slam it all down, or should I be careful not to have a heartattack from getting mad when I think about this movie. First off, I don't know if I can call this a musical. Yes it indeed is full of music, none of which is original. And yes, they've done all the music in different styles, but absolutely without taste. Secondly, the story cannot be any older than the first record of human activity on earth. It's one uncreative plot and not to mention completely overdone. Maybe the one good thing about this movie is how colorful everything is, as long as that doesn't hurt your eyes.

They should really let Baz Luhrmann make more movies, he never just shows up and lets the film roll. Every time out, he opens all the windows and fills the movie theatre with fresh air. Maybe not everything works every time, but you never walk away thinking "Oh, I've seen seen that movie before". Movies need more wild, wreckless, imaginative movies like this one.

Garbage. Over-cooked, over-produced, over-directed. The story was a trite rip-off of countless earlier Camille/La Boheme yarns that added absolutely nothing to a shopworn and tired idea. As usual, Kidman was insipid-looking and limp as an actress. Her singing was notably weak. McGregor sang remarkably well, and this was one of the few strong points of this waste of film stock. Predictable plot line adorned by cartoonish and unbelieveable characters. What was absolutely bogus and mentally retarded was the use of Elton John songs and other contemporary ditties in a fin-de-siecle Paris setting: what was supposed to be, I suppose, a post-modernist take on anachronisms fell decidely flat, a gambit that came out totally ridiculous. The only thing about this popular culture abortion that had any merit was the art direction, which was, admittedly, top-knotch. So, two stars for the stunning look of the film and McGregor's performance.

I loved this movie! The music and colorful sets suck you in. Nicole Kidman looks beautiful and has a sweet voice (not the strongest vocals on her part but quit melodic and pretty sounding) I was suprised how well Ewan Mcgregor can sing. This is such a beautiful film for so many reasons.I think the 2 leads were cast perfectly and became a fan of Mcgregor after this one..

This movie gets an extra two stars because I admire the director Baz Luhrmann's creative and intuitive ideas basing somewhat bland original ideas and turning them into an entertaining and spectacular visual feast (Romeo and Juliet - 1996). However, I COULD NOT STAND Moulin Rouge. The diffculty I have with this movie is that so many people hyped it before I watched it and when I finally watched it I was expecting more and got less. I watched it a second time and I still felt the same. It just didn't do it for me!

A unique, original, sexy, romantic and visually stunning musical. It is set in the 19th century(an 1899 cabaret club) but the songs are modern. Hearing songs such as Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend, Your Song, and Lady Marmalade in a musical setting is really cool. The cast is great with Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo and Richard Roxburgh. Nicole Kidman has a beautiful singing voice, but the best is Ewan McGregor, boy can that man sing!

I have found that this is one of those movies that people either love or hate. Luckily for me I absolutely love it. There is so much ot discover in this movie. It is both heartbreaking and touching with its storyline, breathtaking with its aesthetic beauty and the music is just wonderful. Ewan and Nicole deserved Oscars. I urge everyone to open their minds and give this creative masterpiece a try.

I didn't want to see this movie because Nicole Kidman sang and acted in it, which I believed that she could do neither. Well she has come such a long way since her earlier days of being Mrs. Tom Cruise. She not only held her own, but she had a pleasant singing voice and carried off the part quite well. I like the turn of the century setting with the modern music. The dance sequences were deftly executed and well placed. We started off with the liveliness and joviality of the can can and moved on to the dark, and sexy Tango, which tells a story within a story. There was definately lots of eye-candy, but there was solid acting to back it up from all sides. Although the basic plot was far from original, (boy meets girl, etc), it was the strenght of the actors who took it far. The tragic ending was very powerful because of McGregors performance. You felt his pain. If you have to see any of Baz Lurhman's movies, see this one and spare yourself the pain of the Velvet Goldmine (also starring McGregor).

Really wonderful film! It's so visually stunning to watch, full of vibrant, colourful costumes and scenery. On top of that the music is fun and addictive, mostly adapted from famous pop songs, used in new and inventive ways. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are perfect together, and I was really surprised at how well they performed vocally!

Words cannot describe how awful I thought this movie was. It wasn't the acting, which I thought was good. It was the use of modern music in that era, it just didn't work for me. When "Like a Virgin" came on, that was it for me. I watched the rest of the movie with everyone else, but that was the point of no return. They could have had a wonderful movie without the stupid use of music that doesn't fit with that era. Maybe I'm just too much of a history buff, I just couldn't stand it.

This movie was just bad. Hell, they couldn't even make their own songs and the love story was just sooooo lame. Man they should have sent the money they used to make the movie to poor children in Laos or Kenya or whatever. And I'm talking the neckless Nicole Kidman wore: dude it didn't have to be real diamonds, no one would notice. No just after I watched it I got so pissed off because the songs were ripped off, the jokes weren't even a bit funny, the love story was really lame yet, (just a little comment about the story) Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregors characters were being really selfish. I mean go on and date, but don't ask duke for money then! They didn't have to lie like that. The only person I felt sorry for ( ärligt talat ) was the Duke, cuz he was the jackass and they were using him. Oh my! When Satine was "dying" it was just like "yawn!", you know. What can I say? The story was ripped off, the music was ripped off and oh... did I mention the story being ripped off? Jeesh! Two words: SUX BIGTIME! And for those of you who hasn't watched it yet, a little piece of advice: DON'T!!!

Wow! You know, I wasn't sure to see this movie at first, since the reviews were very mixed. But finally I decided to rent it and give it a shot and I was just blown away! I thought the story was really good - simple enough to be on film but complex enough to be interesting. And man, I've never fallen so in love with a movie before! Love stories don't usually grab me but I was just crying like there's no tomorrow at the end of this one. I know plenty of people don't like Nicole Kidman but I find her skills dazzling every time I see her, and Ewan MacGregor's performance was breathtaking. I'm glad I got to see him in a role that finally allows him to bear his amazing talent. I'll warn you, this movie is very subjective; plenty of people didn't like it. But if you've been searching for a fiercely romantic feast for the senses that isn't your run-of-the-mill romantic drama or hum-drum romantic-comedy, then I recommend you give Moulin Rouge a try.

My favourite movie of all time. This movie is funny, heartbreaking and romantic. It's defiantely one for the ages. It is fabulous, with amazing sets, dance, music and two great stars, in particular Ewan McGregor. This movie is great to see with a boyfriend/girlfriend and of course if you love any of the lead actors. Luhrmann mixes a musical with such vibrant colour, energy and originality that it will keep you wanting more. It's a fun film that at some points will leave you smiling and laughing from ear to ear, e.g. the juke and his fabulous 'Like a Virgin' number. It will also make you cry or at least be moved by the powerful performers where you actually believe these people are in love. Just to round off, it is a story about beauty, freedom, truth and love, "Overcoming all obstacles". A fun movie, especially for hopeless romantics.

Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" is perhaps the most wonderfully convoluted film since "Magnolia", and it may be better. "Rouge" is pure, unadulterated cinematic adrenaline, full of the emptiness of glamour, and the power thereof... It manages to pack itself so full of sheer brilliance that it virtually explodes. Far from perfect, this is definitely one of cinema's eclectic masterpieces. It moves with the pace of an electric lightshow through a plot of shoestring breadth with all the power that any movie romance can muster. How does it do it? By being something more than I've ever seen before... It's striking, beautiful... It is doubtlessly going to become the inspiration for a thousand imitations, making it the best and worst mainstream event of 2001's cinema. It's a collage of art. And it is, truly... art!

I am still formulating my opinion about this visually stunning movie. The characters sing there way through a storyline that seems secondary to the scenery and the fantastical costumes that seem to change every time the musical score changes ... and that is quite often. The movies lighter moments made the audience laugh out loud, while some of the more touching moments seemed unimportant as the creative backdrops flew across the screen. You probably don't want to miss it but I can't say why exactly!

There are enough problems here that I wouldn't give M.R. an unqualified recommendation, but to be fair, this film takes so many exciting chances that no one with an open mind should miss it. First off, it's so visually spectacular that I can picture Tim Burton watching this with fear, realizing he's not top dog when it comes to bringing otherwordliness alive on-screen. Second, you'll fall out of your chair at the crazy music score which recontextualizes Elton John, the Sound of Music, Nirvana, Madonna, the Police, Patti LaBelle, and on and on. Third, the entire pace of the film is unlike anything else I've experienced -- it's almost like a (very well done) music video that's 2+ hrs long. Finally, Nicole Kidman is excellent. The only bad element is that the throw-everything-at-you approach (that works musically) is a little numbing emotionally; in particular, the cartoon-like humorous parts are grating from the start and rarely are worth the disruptions they cause. Also, while I think reviews that say "there's no story there" are wrong (while secondary to the movie's look'n'feel, the plot is actually well-designed if a bit simple), for whatever reason, I didn't get emotionally hooked by the movie, so near the "tear-jerking" ending my mind was wandering off and thinking about how uncomfortable the seats in the theater were. And oh yeah, if you're gonna see this movie -- do NOT see it at the Union Station AMC theaters in Wash DC. The movie started half and hour late, and b/c of that, their 3 hr parking validation did me no good and I wound up paying $6 for parking. What a ripoff.... But I guess that's not director Baz Luhrman's fault -- everything he did was pretty incredible.

Well what can I say about this movie that hasn't already or soon will be said? It's absolute pure and unadulterated genius. Moulin Rouge never for a moment leaves you without some sort of compelling image or emotion. The actors have a powerful chemistry that manages to capture the audience's attention amidst all the frienzied goings-on. And that, I assure you, is quite a feat. And, of course, one would be remiss if one did not mention the shockingly good music! The retooled songs that I'm sure would sound corny in any other movie seem to fit perfectly in Moulin Rouge. The singing is surprisingly good as well, considering that the majority of it is done by two actors not widely known for their singing ability. I wish I could find ways to fully express to you, too, just how amazing just the visual..everything is. It's like nothing I've ever seen in entire life. You are forever being bombarded with some kind of elaborate image, a new and before unimaginable picture. It's really undescribable. Baz Lurrhman did an astonishing job on this film. The camera angles, the colors, the music, the actors, the sets, just everything was perfect. I would not have changed one thing. Not one minute of this truly beautiful movie is ever, ever wasted. Neither will your time if you go see it, so get off your booty and do so! Now! I command you!

THE FIRST GREAT FILM OF 2001! Finally a movie that has everything! Romance, comedy, great music,a musical, great performances from an entire cast!,drama, moments that will have you on the floor laughing and moments that will have tears running down to your chin. This is brilliant filmmaking. Plain and simple. It is so refreshing to see a film and film maker not afraid to take a huge chance. This is no Someone Like you or What Women Want. This is the most wildly entertaining, deeply moving, thouroly enjoyable and all around great film. I felt like I was watching a great broadway stage production. But this was beyond just a stage musical. This is film and it is completly free from the restrictions of the stage. The remarkable director,Baz Luhrman, uses this to a remarkable asvantage takeing us to places beyond our imagination. No matter how far we get from everyday life and its limitations we are always brought back by the glorious love story which unfolds between our two main protaginists. Ewan MsGreggor does an absolutly impeccable job as a young man who moves to the town where the Moulin Rouge is located to be a part of the Bohemian revolution and become a writer. Then there is Nicole Kidman who gives a knock out performance as the main atraction and prostitute at the local hoe house Moulin Rouge. Through beautiful songs which happily adapt lyrics from some of the 20th centuries greatest songs, the two fall madly in love. What is the catch? Tha A hole duke has pretty much paid for and bought Nicole Kidman and The Moulin Rouge. This could have a trajic outcome for everyone that has anything to do with the Moulin Rougr, not to mention the two star crossed lovers. What a brillian, remarkable and perfect film this is. A musical for the new millinium. Stylish and powerful, Moulin Rouge is one of the best romances to be told in quit a long time. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I encourege everyone to take their woman or man to see this Gorgeouse film. Do yourself a favor! Belive me, I am only looking out for those who read my review. I care for you and want the best for you. This is a movie you cannot go to the grave without ubsorbing. See it in the theater and get the full effect. DO NOT WAIT FOR VIDEO OR DVD! See it today!

This was the silliest thing I ever saw...and I must admit I LOVED it! The whole audience was cracking up with the corniness of modern music in such an unlikely setting (1800s Paris) , but that's what made it so much fun! It was a truly gutsy effort for everyone involved...who knew it would work? Who knew that Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor could sing and dance? This is one of those movies that you either love or you hate, depending on your attitude and how seriously you take it. Don't take it seriously...just sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds...and laugh. PS I guarantee this will be made into a Broadway show soon.
