This is a good outfit and I give it a contribution every year.

Granted, they have seen their better days as Non Profit's Tops. The fact remains that they are usually fast to respond and financially generous... sometimes to the undeserving or manipulating. That's a flaw I've learned to deal with by putting my two cents in when it comes to intuition. After volunteering for our local chapter for quite a few years now, I can actually talk to the supervisors as though I am just another staff, open and honest. I express myself freely and if it weren't for that I wouldn't even consider staying on with them. I haven't done much with them for the last few months. I've had a lot of other things and people to care for. Also, I've recently heard some bad remarks about the local chapter, but, you know how gossip is. You don't know how true some of the things people say actually are. Eventually the truth comes out and when it does then I will make my mind up whether or not to stay. Until then, they can count on what little free time I have in 2007.

I volunteered for the American Red Cross (ARC) for a number of years as an Emergency Response Instructor Trainer. Even though I recognize that the organization has a long history of helping people, the administration is far from perfect. Each chapter seems to be a separate business onto itself governed by egocentric administrators. I am a successful entrepreneur with two corporations that have done well over the years. I entered into a business deal with the Los Angeles Chapter in which they were to benefit over $60,000 a year for reselling my products. Essentially all they had to do was place a phone call to receive a commission since product was being dropped shipped. All was fine for 8 months until two of the top administrators attempted to "knock off" my products by going to my vendors. Sadly, I was forced to have my attorney serve them notice. It ended my relationship with Red Cross. They lost $60,000 a year for the LA Chapter and resulted in loosing a competent medical professional who donated over 300 hours a year in training students from the public. I'll never do business with or donate to the American Red Cross again. By the way, both administrators left messages on my answering machine confessing to what I described above. I have saved the tapes to date.

A couple of years back my company was doing well and I wanted to arrange for a substantial (on the low end, though) ongoing contribution. However, I wanted it earmark it for international efforts. I placed two phone calls to people who appeared to have some authority and they promised someing would get back to me. Never did. Their loss is Habitat's gain.

Been around for quite some time and the people risk thier lives to get aid to most places. Seem to be organized and the first to arive on the scene with support of all kinds for humanity. After reading some peoples responses here and finding out the person that runs Red Cross makes 1/2 million a year I do have some possible doubts but all in all they do a good job.

I have no use for the ARC. While serving at a Naval Hospital I made out the paper work to pay the ARC for every pint of blood we transfused. Blood that was donated by other Americans that they thought was to be given to out injured troops. After the 1980 tornado, which devastated Council Bluffs, Ohio, they were selling coffee to the residents. Again in New York after 9-11 I paid a quarter (25 cents) for a cup of coffee from a trailer they had at the sight. This was the day after on 9/12. I had only a couple of sandwiches to eat during the night, we all were working straight through. I was tired and worn out I saw their trailer and headed over to them for a cup of hot coffee and a quick sit down. The woman serving said it was a quarter. Later that day I was GIVEN coffee and Danish at a SALVATION ARMY TRUCK. I donate to the Salvation Army or the Catholic Relief Agency

I am highly disappointed in this group. Friends of mine that have come back from war have recieved bills from this organization for any help they have recieved, while in war. For the 9-11 thing, it was promised that all money would go to the families of those involved in it, the money has yet to be seen. They decided after, that they would save it just in case something else came up I don't like this. Why promise something and then turn your backs on it, and why, from all these people donating does it cost people who are in war or whatever to recieve help? Freaking administrators pocketing too much for themselves, that's why.

The Red Cross is a money-making organization that's in the business of selling blood. A totally phony getover scam. Notorious for being slow on the pay-out when catastrophe strikes. And boy, the public has been most effectively BSed about these clowns for decades. Wake up America, if you can, and root out the bogus already!!!

I would rate this group higher but I know that they charged the military men for their services during World War II, and that they are over-hyped. Even during the crisis of 9/11, the Salvation Army did most of the real work of providing meals, etc. while the Red Cross just took the media for a ride.

The Red Cross has done a lot of good in the world over the years – or so we hear. But I believe it has also gone the route of many other mega-charities and has gotten a bit too big headed since it was founded. During WWII they were in charge of giving the okay when it came to emergency leave for service men and women. My father had grown up very close to his maternal grandmother who died while he was in serving in the navy. He was still state side at the time and when he applied for a short leave to attend her funeral the navy had no problem. However, the final decision for this leave was pending permission of the Red Cross. He applied and was promptly turned down for no apparent reason. I have also heard stories, from reliable sources, that they do not always give aid (hot soup, beverages, etc.) but often times actually have the gall to charge people for it. Combine all that with a certain amount of corrupt leadership and well, let’s just say it wasn’t hard for me to look around and find charities more deserving of my hard earned money.

The Red Cross is a very important organization. I agree with its ideals of being a benefactor to mankind. I am more impressed with its ability to adapt to its settings. It created a sister gorup called the Red Crescent. This is for all of the countries who object with crosses and things related to them. i.e. the majority of the middle east. This organizations seems to be very noble and deserves more recognition.

What an amazing organization. Led by volunteers, the Red Cross helps large cities, small towns and individual families in times of disaster and simple need. Not only that, they offer courses to prepare and educate people as well as conduct blood and tissue drives. The Red Cross covers all of its bases with education, preparation and relief. Another amazing accomplishment is the innate kindness and selflessness of these volunteers.

They are alwayz there when people need them and they help people when they are really in need. Just think if you were in one of those situations would you want someone to help you out if you could not pay for everything that has happened? They are a great organization!

A very biased organization which has not allowed the Jewish and Israeli Magen David Adom to be equal to the Red Cross and the Muslim Red Crecent.

I forget the details, but the story of how the Red Cross was founded is one of those great stories about the difference that ordinary people can make if they dedicate themselves to a mission they care about.

I don't know a whole lot about the Red Cross, but what I do know is that they are always there when a major tragedy has occurred. Whether it's flooding, an earthquake, major fire, or any other disaster, you always here that the Red Cross has set up shelters for the victims. Aside from that, their major activities center around blood drives to increase the amount blood in blood banks. Sounds to me like they're doing good things.
