The crisis in Pakistan is disgusting. Someone kill Musharraf please. Or, at the very least, put some international pressure on him. I think the first is more likely.

A usurper who should never have been the leader of Pakistan. His firing of the Judiciary and suspension of the constitution is just the tip of the iceburg. He is not a good person.
Liar, Thief, Murderer, Tyrant and ineffective leader...we backed the wrong horse...Bhutto is worse!

Was put in a tough spot following 9/11, and ultimately decided to join the world in combatting terrorism. There have been several "close call" assassination attempts on him as a result, but his anti-terror stance has not wavered. I think his importance can be measured adequately by the ripple effect that his death or removal from power would have on the War on Terrorism, as a radical regime would likely take hold in his place. With that, we would lose a key ally in a part of the world where they are desperately needed. Highly important and effective given the circumstances.

Pakistan is no friend of the West. This man created the Islamic bomb. Some of the worst Islamic madness in the world comes from this man and his corrupted country, which has persecuted India from its beginning. Pakistan is an international danger, a holocaust for the West waiting to happen. Musharraf is nothing more than a thug who is being paid money to cooperate. He is no different than a murderer who the police want to use as an informer. They have to pay him off and keep him safe so they can get the one who hired him. Disgusting.

I'm not too fond of how he took power, but hey - if the government was about to fall and it were you or the religious hardliners, what would you do? He knows how to play the diplomacy game, and I'd rather see him petting the nukes than some nutty mullah. To put in perspective, would you rather have rumsfeld or jerry fallwell holding the button in the us? We might actually live a whole week longer with rummy in the helm!

Very cunning General. Not trustworthy. Talks very sweet on the outside. He is certainly helping us because of fear/aid. But who knows what he is actually doing behind the doors. One day he says there are no terrorists in pakistan. Later he says Osama might be there. He was the one who helped Taliban and terrorists establish base in afghanistan. Fearing our backlash, he changed his support. VERY CUNNING MILITARY RULER. THE LATEST NEWS IS THAT HE PAID $16 in taxes while eating up public money. Not sure where our aid is spent on. If it is spent on guns/weapons, we need to have a strict mechanism to monitor about controls..

Better than France's regime. He's helped us, especially in capturing that #2 Al Qeada guy. He seems sneaky and probably wouldn't be usefull in the future.

Pakistani people had not seen a leader who cared about the country in a long time and they are glad they found musharraf. He is so much better then the previous leaders pakistan has had, and people are actualyy releaved to see a leader who cares about the country and is not interested in lotting it. Right now, he is a wave of fresh air; even though I do not approve of him giving american troops permission to stay in Pakistan. He is going to stay in power for a long time. God Willing.

Granted, Musharraf is not a democratically elected leader, but the world needs him now at the helm of the leadership of Pakistan. His support for us in Afghanistan has been invaluable. Democracy is an important institution, so I hope that he does follow up on his promise to have elections next year. But a cross-cultural examination of the situation in Pakistan needs to occur as well. This country is not the same as most Western Democracies are. In Pakistan, like most 3rd World countries, the military is very strongly established. If a politician does not have the support of the military, then they do not have the support necessary to maintain power. If Musharraf falls, there will be a power vaccum and the result will be the takeover of that countries government by fundamentalist forces. We definitely don't want that to occur. I understand why Musharraf had to take over by coup; the previous government was woefully corrupt and the economy was stagnant. Some may say that the ends do not justify the means; I would say that personally myself, but people also have to understand that there is only so much corruption and incompetence that an economic and political system can face before it falls to averse forces. Musharraf is at least trying to work within a democratic framework, which is key. And he is supportive of the War against Terrorism; it was tough for him to do this considering the political climate in Pakistan. He is taking leadership, which is something Pakistan hasn't seen in a while.

It's not important for me it a democracy function good or less good, it doesn't legitimize a military coup d'état any more, being in Pakistan or the States! The coup makers in Chile, with Pinochet in front, used the same arguments when they removed Salvador Allende from the president chair. And what did we see as the result? Thousands of innocent human beings being tortured & killed, a horrifying regime that didn't allow people with different views & opinions! Up till these day Chile has been one of the main action countries for Amnesty, of this same reason. :-(
