Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) 1

** spoiler alert ** WARNING> This review *sparkles* in sunlight.

Banal. Horribly written. Trite.

Yeah, I know many of you are rolling your eyes. You’ve heard it all before and you either 1)disagree with the criticism OR 2) agree with the criticism but love the story anyway. You’re about to enlighten me with the following wisdom: GET OVER IT! OK, so Twilight is not exactly great literature BUT the story is amazing, Edward is every girl’s dream, this is a sweet and romantic, albeit light and fluffy, vampiric romp, RELAX and enjoy! Also, Edward is sooo hot!!

To you I say: Bite Me.

I have a lot of issues with this book besides the fact that it is horribly written. Boring characters, weak character development, characters I just don’t give a damn about. Bella: Boring. Clumsy and beautiful, but she doesn’t know she’s attractive even though every boy in the school is in love with her. Edward: Perfect. Brooding, angst-ridden, and perfect. He’s remained chaste for nearly 100 years? And is attracted to Bella because he can’t read her mind and she smells good. Boring. Jacob: Eh. Kinda boring. Bella’s friends: Filler. The Cullens: My favorite characters, the only ones I want to know more about. Especially enjoyed Alice.

So about 90% of the book consists of Bella obsessively swooning over Edward. Lots of painful dialogue. And Angsty stalker Edward struggling with his danger to Bella and his love for Bella. Yes, I say stalker because the fact that he follows her everywhere and watches her while she sleeps even though they barely know each other is creepy.
Finally towards the end of the book Stephenie Meyer decides to throw in some sort of plot and we’re treated to about 10 minutes of action. Enter the antagonists.

Oh yeah, at some point they fall in love. Randomly and for no apparent reason, there’s no suspense or build up at all. Just OMG He’s so hot! OMG I’m dangerous, stay away from me! OMG. “And so the Lion fell in love with the Lamb.” The end.

Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) 1

To be upfront, I had reservations about this book. But my reservations were based on my prior love for vampire-based fiction (Anne Rice, Buffy, etc.) rather than on my perception of its popularity.

After listening to my friends gush about it for weeks, I thought it was time I picked it up. I even bought a copy because I was so eager to read it. Indeed, the first few pages, though not very well-written, were engaging.

The book clearly devolved into one of the most fragmented, poorly timed, and dialogue-heavy books I have ever read. Many people have complained that the build-up to Edward and Bella's "love" was both drawn out and poorly developed. Their criticisms are correct. Days and days of pining after the sullen and spiteful Edward are resolved at the snap of fingers. And all of this hatred and love occurs well before the characters have even the most rudimentary knowledge of one another.

The dialogue was trite, and the sexual descriptions were dollar-store. And this is coming from someone who devoured Anne Rice's verbose sexual ramblings with fervor for years.

Meyer falls short of both writing and of creating a compelling fantasy world. I can't escape into your novel when I'm constantly putting it down to laugh at it and then compose myself. I am 21, so I consider myself young enough to have found this book great if it were actually worth reading.

If you're younger and you read this review, I encourage you to watch the first three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu. You will get more than your fill of WELL-WRITTEN tortured vampire-human love and forced chastity. And even better - a real heroine who calls the shots instead of taking them.

What every Twi-hard -- and I am most definitely one -- wants to know about the audiobook: How does our beloved Twilight fare with this reader. The answer: Absolutely fantastic. Ilyana Kadushin is a great reader and well-cast for the part.

If you love Twilight you will really enjoy having this story read to you, especially if, like me, you enjoy listening to books in the car.

To Twi-hards, Twilight is one of the great reads of all time and one you can never get enough of. Owning the audiobook gives you Twilight again .. Hopefully, one day Stephenie will take pity on us Cullen lovers and give us Midnight Sun. If and when that day occurs, I'll be one of the first in line to place an order.

Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) 3

I liked parts of the book and the overall storyline has potential. Some of the characters are interesting (the vampire family and Jacob), but the 2 main characters are boring. There are pages and pages of their emotional "turmoil" repeating throughout the book.
The action bits were good and with more action and less of the sappy "he loves me / he loves me not" this book could've been great.

Twilight is a great book for those of us who enjoy the supernatural gendre, especially when the subject deals with Vampires!

Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) 1

I'm in eighth grade and just about every girl in my school of about 850 has read the book. Even the dumb kids read it! I figured, what the heck, why not. I borrowed the book from my friend and I have to say it SUCKED!!!! I always read a book to the end, no matter how terrible, because I figure that it might have an awesome ending or something. I tried as hard as I could to read the whole thing because everyone said, "It gets better." Let me tell you, it doesn't. I was on page 380 something and I fell asleep. Boring dialogue and pointless description filled each and every one of the countless pages. There was the occasional attempt for action but it didn't last. The parts that were suspenseful lasted a whole half a page or two pages at most. There was no underlying reason to continue reading it. I didn't finish the book, I had no desire to. Honestly, I think it is just a fad, and people decided they liked it because it was the cool thing to do. The shirts, posters, bags, etc with twilight sayings and pictures on them are just wastes of resources and completely pointless. I mean, it's a BOOK!!!!!
