Hamlet (William Shakespeare) 5

One of Shakespeare's most influential plays.  I don't care if people say it's boring; it's a timeless classic.

It's a work of art that is a perfect mirror- what you get out of the play pretty much shows the baggage you bring into it. . .

Hamlet is one of the best Shakespearean works, but in my opinion, Macbeth is the greatest of them all. I like Hamlet because he has a personality like mine(only really old version).

Shakespeare wrote Hamlet around the time his father died; shortly after this his own son died. Something had happened to him, psychologically and emotionally; his first play after these events was the first great tragedy produced in Europe in two thousand years. It is infinitely complex, and I won't even attempt an interpretation in a capsule opinion on this website... except to say that Hamlet is far more than an indecisive man; he is maybe the most intelligent man in literature, and shows the paralyzing uncertainty of one who thinks too much and too well. Don't look at him as a man who couldn't make up his mind (the condescending and utterly stupid introductory tag from the 1947 Lawrence Olivier version) but as one in unbearable agony. Shakespeare's second best play after King Lear.

A true masterpiece, with nuances that reward the careful reader on each return. With this play and King Lear, Shakespeare's genius is made clear.

Above and beyond, this is Shakespeare's best play with really only Othello and King Lear coming close. The characters in this play are what really grab me; they are burdened so heavily with their humanity and their tragic flaws that they personify real life. Best in humor, drama and beautiful prose, this should be read by all.

I believe Hamlet is one of the most intriguing characters to appear from shakespeare's plays. He shows all the darkest human emotions and displays everything that is habitual and natural of a human being. Although I must say Gertrude is the worst of shakespeare's characters. A very selfish and stupid woman, no wonder hamlet makes such harsh generalisations about women with that silly bitch as a role model. Awful woman.

One of the timeless stories in literature. My favorite part is that the most quoted parts of Shakespeare are from the pompous and bumbling character in this play. Quotes like "Brevity is the soul of wit" which preface a page dialog of explanation that could have been said quickly. Sheer genius.

I would urge anyone to read and more importantly listen to Hamlet. Shakespeare is as relevant today as then. That said, it is sometimes difficult to get the full meaniing of the prose . To realize the full beauty of Hamlet or any Shakespeare for that matter, you need to listen to it,or read it, more than once. Each time it gets better.
