Overwrites. Too impressed with himself. Has a good writer in him somewhere but needs an editor.

Robert Crais started out strong, and is only getting better. The Elvis Cole mysteries read like comic books --- Joe Pike is a little hard to take if you don't keep that in mind --- they are terrific escapism! His most recent, Hostage, a non-Elvis book, was fantastic. The characters are engaging, and the books are well plotted and paced. I can't wait for the next one!

The Elvis Cole mysteries are among the best ones out there. Set in LA, a city overflowing with fictional detectives, they stand out because they are without exception smoothly written, fast paced, tightly plotted, yet realistic and sensitive. Crais has a wonderful sense of humor, and Elvis Cole is a quirky, likeable private eye.
