during the silent film era he was one of the best. the man of a thousand faces could disappear behind that makeup and become anyone. considering during the silents a person would also have to be a good mime. he was a wonderful talent. He also died too young only 47. sad.

Perhaps the greatest of the silent film stars in terms of versatility , the absolute master of disguise, and his roles in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera alone are enough to secure his high ranking in the all time greats of cinema.

I'm a big fan of character actors and I consider Lon Chaney to be the first. Watching silent films I think is an acquired taste. To be able to act with just your face and your body takes incredible talent and Chaney was a master at it. He also understood the camera. The original Phantom of the Opera is still the best. Other films include Laugh Clown Laugh, The Unknown, London After Midnight, The Road to Mandalay, The Unholy Three, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Though he is now considered by many to be a "horror" film star, that is really not an accurate description of Lon Chaney. If you think about it, he seldom played any kind of monster. Most of the roles he played - including his most famous ones - were portraying unfortunate, tormented human beings. And he did a great job of it too. Not only was he a great actor but he was an artist. He did his own makeup. He practically created the characters he played all by himself. He's one of the best and most unique film stars of the silent era.

Sadly, much of Lon Chaney’s work has been lost to the ages along with interest by the general public in silent films. My first introduction to him was through the old film staring James Cagney entitled, “Man of a Thousand Faces”. This is a good film, but don’t expect to get the entire story here – just a glossy but entertaining substitute. What I did glean from it was that Chaney was apparently one of the true geniuses and trailblazers of special effects makeup and costume. Film historians, film buffs and students may be the only ones who can truly appreciate the magnitude of his contributions to film. But I have a feeling that even though we may not always know it we are probably still appreciating the results of what he did to this very day.
