 | AndrewScott (73) 10/27/2004 | Over time, many government-sponsored programs show themselves in need of major overhauls. Although flu shot supply problems of the past two years should have led the Health Department to plan for the worst, it's quite a stretch to see the president as responsible for this year's errors. The only aspect in which this could hold water with voters is with those already disgruntled with the broader issue of inadequacies of their own health care. Kerry's stance that this flu shot shortage relates to a Don't Get Sick plan by Bush is an opportunistic way for him to spin this. However, if Bush manages a convincing stand on how he is proactively addressing vaccine supply issues for the future, I doubt this would cost him votes.

 | Donovan (137) 10/27/2004 | Maybe so Andrew but to blame this on Bush is stupid, Kerry should not have even gone there!!!

 | GrNEyEzZ72 (0) 10/21/2004 | Okay, number 1 if we need to blame the shortage of the flu vaccine on anyone it should be the Clinton administration. It was because of their administration encouraging EVERYONE to receive it and then giving it away for free that put the companies that manufacture it in this country out of business. As for the vaccine being considered a political vice -- THIS IS RIDICOLOUS! I can't believe how people are acting about this. Do you know that the vaccine is guesstimated each year and it is only good for one strain -- who knows from year to year what strain is going hit? I'll tell you who -- NO ONE!!! This is the stupidest thing Kerry had said or done since he joked about 'marrying up' instead of saying how much he loved his wife. He's an idiot!!

 | EschewObfuscation (71) 10/21/2004 | Well, I thought it was ridiculous to place all of the blame for the downturn in the economy on the sitting president, as ridiculous as according a democrat president all of the credit when the economy is doing well, but blaming the president for shortages of flu vaccine? What about that shortage of Viagra last month in San
Francisco? Man that was a real boner (translation: bone-head play) for Bush. I heard a guy in Denver last week had a hangnail, well, Bush has certainly lost his vote.

 | CastleBee (85) 10/21/2004 | I KNEW this would somehow end up being Bush's fault since, according to Kerry's camp everything else is. No, I sincerely doubt it. It wouldn't surprise me to find out it had something to do with a deal between British and American pharmaceutical companies though. After all, if a lot of people get the flu they stand to make a much bigger profit producing cures rather than prevention. And, if there's just enough flu vaccine to cover the high risk groups then they don't even have to feel that guilty about it.

 | phlip-tout (0) 10/21/2004 | They don't make the flu shot here in America 'cause there's not enough profit in it. If the government doesn't assume responsibility for this, it may lead to proof that capitalism doesn't work.

 | louiethe20th (78) 10/20/2004 | As I stated in a prior list, I blame most of this on Hillary Clinton with her Child Vaccine program. The companies in the U.S. figured out that there was no money to be made in this and it was passed to overseas drug companies.Typical desperation again by Hanoi John!!!

 | abichara (63) 10/20/2004 | I would consider it tough to blame George Bush for the flu shot shortage. Considering that medical experts are anticipating a bad flu season, this truly doesn't bode well for those with weakened immune systems. It's obvious that we're in the heat of campaign season when even this is somehow turned into a political issue. Chiron Corporation, the company which produces the flu vaccination that was contaminated, is actually owned and regulated by the British government. Chiron supplies about half of America's supply of flu vaccines--without this supply, the country is left very vulnerable. It has made some significant profits from procuring a bird-flu vaccination for the US Army. However there is nothing much here to suggest that the Bush administration is in any way to blame for this incident. Angry Democrats may add this to the litany of charges against the President, but it's a stretch to place the blame on Bush.

 | magellan (177) 10/19/2004 | I certainly hope that with the all the substantive problems with the Bush presidency, that an absence of flu shots isn't a factor in determining our next president. The only way this would be a concern for me is if: 1) the provider of the flu shots was an unproven vendor who won the contract because of campaign contributions to the Bush campaign; 2) that Bush doesn't discipline the person responsible for the screw up (if in fact, there was a screw up). While I wouldn't put either of these situations past this administration, I haven't heard anything to indicate that either of these happened.
