I don't think this is particular evidence one way or the other of good character. I have met some highly educated people who had all the character of a Barbary pirate.

I do find a certain irony in this item being on the list, in that several reviewers who have been commenting on "character" over the last week have historically expressed some startlingly bizarre beliefs on astro-physics, geology, biology and history, while denigrating any empirical research to the contrary.

Educating oneself is fine, but there have been some that have educated themselves beyond their intellegence.

Living life is what educates people.

Thomas Jefferson has once said, "I believe that ignorance is the root of all evil." After all, without knowledge of what is good and what is bad, one cannot truly have good character.

Educating oneself has everything to do with character and nothing to do with social status. Everyone educates themselves everyday even if they do not know it. If a person can not teach themselves something than they will never learn how to be educated. education has less to do with school than it does with everyday life. People learn right from wrong by viewing others and imitation, they will never learn if someone tells them.

Has nothing to do with Character. There are millions of people living in poverty who never will have the opportunity to educate themselves. Are they scumbags. Hell no. Lets not try to sell this one. A little compassion is needed here.
