self control and good character are not synonymous but I do agree that there are some of those that let their addictions control their lives and to feed those addictions they become capable of things that are of a negative nature and hurt other people.

self control in many situations to me is a plus. so many think they can't function without drugs or can't control themselves when they are drinking. its probably true but its a weakness i don't want to deal with and i don't think is a legitament excuse. if you are going to do something you better have control or don't do it. some addictions are just unacceptable with or without self control
