 | twansalem (44) 05/16/2007 | Not quite as good as Civ II in many respects, but I definitely liked the addition of borders and colonies. Better than Civ IV in that while the graphics were better than Civ II, they didn't go with unnecessary full blown 3D graphics.

 | adamyesme1111 (0) 02/05/2007 | The thing Helmut is if you dont have a resource you can try to find the land that has it, by either starting a war, sorta like we did in Iraq. Or you can trade for it like USA has been doing for the longest time, if you want steel, buy it.

 | helmut (16) 02/13/2006 | Unfortunately, this was a step down from CIVII in every area besides graphics. I liked the fact that some units can bombard in this game, but it has a whole bunch of little irritating, most of which are enumerated by JonTheMan below. Also, the resourse factor tries to make the game more strategic, but in actuallity it is just annoying. For example, if you start out without iron on your continent, you are pretty much out of luck because there is NO POSSIBLE WAY you can win the game without steel. The same goes for oil and rubber. Other resources can be done without, but some are essential, and if you don't controll it, you don't win.

 | TJGypsy2 (7) 09/07/2004 | The game is fully as good as the other Civ games, but that's part of why it only gets 4 stars. I was hoping for something more groundbreaking, and this game does not deliver. The only real way to win the game is still by conquest, diplomacy still doesn't seem to do much good, and the way this game handles resources (such as steel and rubber) mean if you get a bad start early on, there is no hope for you. The culture thing seemed cool at first, until you realize it can stop the expansion of your civ cold, if you fall behind, and even start costing you cities. Also, the game still has that aggravating habit of letting medieval warriors triumph over tanks and such. That infuriated me in the first one, the second one, and they STILL haven't gotten rid of it!! Seriously, do you think an archer could take out an M1A1 Abrahms? Play Civ III, and they just might.
Every bit as fun as the first two, but nothing special here, really. I'd wait for it to hit the discount bin.

 | Jello (3) 04/22/2004 | I want to start off by saying this is a good game, but a low point in the Civ series. Civ II will always be the best, and everyone knows that. This game has much better graphics and other nice features, and I do like the resources and the culture thing is OK, but it just doesnt seem to have the same feel as the original Civ games. Bottom line, its a nice game, but not worth the price you pay. (40-50$ as of April 2004)

 | Yorthan (0) 04/13/2004 | Feels like an updated Civ II, which I suppose only makes sense. (I'd give it 5 stars, but they make you buy the expansion to do multiplayer, and even then, it doesn't always work well.)

 | JonTheMan (29) 12/04/2003 | The annoying thing about civilization 3 is that conquest doesn't actually seem to be a worthwhile factor anymore. Sure you can barge into a city and take it off another civilization but then you have to deal with foriegn nationals, rebels, immense corruption, the possibility of your occupying army being overthrown etc. There seems to be no real reward for capturing cities (especially those far from your capital). An annoying element in this game is that civilizations can easily stop you making a decent offensive into thier territory by force of culture and if the opposing country has a much higher culture then yours you can expect to come a cropper. Did Genghis Khan and his mongolian hordes capture such a huge empire by counteracting local culture? Gimme a break. The resources scheme of things tries to make the civ series more tactical and intuitive but can't even touch the brilliant hieghts of the trade system in such games as Imperialism. This game is just not what I expected. I wanted something really ground-breaking all thats happened here is a couple revisions to civ 2, some good, some bad. This series takes 1 step forward and two steps back managing niether to be as exciting or as addictive as civ 2.

 | morvit (0) 10/27/2003 | HAHA! If you think civilzation 3 is good. Try Civilzation 2, it is way better than civilzation 3. In my opinion, civ 2's music is way better. Civ 2's music is very exciting, and for every situation (eg. a city that got hit with nuclear missile), it has a suitable sound for it. Graphic-wise, Civ 2 is also better (which is very sad )because it is way easiler to see which land has a whale or which land has a magical house which gives you stuff. Try Civ2, it cost so less now. Civ 3's confusing gameplay is really frustrating. Civilzation is really bad compare to civ 2. But the game would be concider ok compared to other games out there. Sid Meier is just amazing with games.

 | soniabell (0) 07/18/2003 | This game is like a bag of doritos...where to stop? I think my hair grew an inch while i was playing it....days went by. The downside is that turns get too slow, as the maps get bigger and it lacks some of the options of the original.

 | liquidlen (0) 05/10/2003 | Maybe I suck, but this one seemed a lot harder to play the way I like to play (whatever THAT means, I was awesome at Civ2 but I'm Milhouse Van Houten on Civ3 - and the rest of the world is Nelson Munz).

 | legiondary (0) 02/01/2002 | Vastly improved diplomacy making adversaries more fun to play. I like the idea of specialized units unique to each civilization. The advisors are actually helpful and sometimes funny (put all resources towards science and he'll still complain we don't have enough funding!) I miss the exotic technologies and units from Call to Power though and don't care for the mandatory retirement year 2050, though I understand it in context of the game.
