Since 1813 (proudly displayed on each front page, along with the words Alabama's Oldest Newspaper), the folks residing along Mobile Bay were given a more local perspective of an ever-changing southeast, USA, and world each edition. Like the city of Mobile in the years after the War of 1812, the Register (first began as the Mobile Gazette) has also survived under various management and absorption. Even the Register and its presses had to endure its own news coverage, such as when 1979's Hurricane Frederic actually forced the presses to come to a stop for a couple of days. Despite all the rough surfs and criticism (on supposed political leanings and such), the folks at today's Register continue to inform (plenty of award winning reports spanning the 1990s), amuse (columnists Gene Owens, Frances Coleman), and even let their readers have the chance to speak via the Sound Off column. There's no doubt in my mind of this institution of South Alabama's past, present, and future will live to see volume 200 in 2013.
