 | Strijdom (3) 06/19/2008 | John Kerry was always gonna lose. How can one elect someone with no character?

 | Astromike (16) 09/15/2007 | The news media REALLY wanted Kerry elected it was SO obvious! They had you thinking Bush didn't have a chance. Especially after the debates. The "silent majority" turned out in droves though, and proved alot of people wrong!

 | luridlloyd (9) 07/23/2007 | Anyone of us who heard the exit polling durring the day were VERY suprised. When we accuse coutries of fixed elections, we use the exit polling as proof. Kerry was doing much better in the midwest and especially Ohio than was later reported. Electronic paperless voting machines were fixed. Never has any Republican voter claimed that his vote was switched to a Dem. Many people said the machines changed their votes the other way. I believe them. All we have to do is go back to the 13th district in Florida where Vern Buchanan won. There were 17,811 ballots from Democratic leaning precints where there was no vote recorded for Congress. 2006 was all about the House races, and I can't believe Sarasotans would vote for Harbor Commission and not for Congress. The Democrat Christine Jennings lost by less than 400 votes.

 | irishgit (137) 02/08/2007 | Not particularly surprising. Incumbents have a huge advantage, and history shows they seldom lose. The fact that two have within living memory is something of an anomoly. Further, no president has ever been defeated in the midst of a war. Kerry's campaign was generally unfocussed after winning the nomination, and while it wasn't a slam dunk by Bush, it was a significant plurality that put him back in the saddle. Only the vagaries of the electoral college make this look close.

 | GenghisTheHun (168) 02/06/2007 | The Democrats really defeated themselves by nominating Kerry. With the exception of goofy Howlin' Howie Dean, just about anyone else would have been a stronger candidate. The Dems hated Bush so much that they seized on Kerry in the Iowa Caucuses as the "candidate who could beat Bush."
You must field a candidate, folks, who has a little character and reject the opportunists. Kerry's stance on issues was: "Vote for me, because I want to be President."

 | abichara (60) 02/07/2005 | I've really got to be a bit more careful before picking a winner! First I predicted that Kerry would win the election then I predicted that the Eagles would win the Super Bowl. Both were close contests, but still! However this was a tough race to predict, given the narrow margin of victory across several states. In the final analysis, Kerry ran a competent but totally visionless campaign. For all of his political problems, Bush ran a very efficient campaign machine that was driving by a very tight message. Bush was able to paint Kerry as weak on defense matters, especially on Iraq, which killed the Democrats in the final analysis. Is the Democratic party dead? Certainly not, it simply needs a compelling candidate to deliver a solid message to the country, Kerry simply didn't fit the bill.

 | scarletfeather (46) 12/22/2004 | Towards the end I was hoping Kerry would pull off a last-minute upset, but I was not greatly surprised, just very disappointed. Unfortunately, Kerry did not run the most effective campaign. He needed someone like Karl Rove running his campaign, but he didn't have anyone like that, and what's more it seems he tried to be his own campaign manager. Unfortunately, many folks bought into the Republican propoganda machine, and allowed Bush to scare them into voting for him. Unfortunately, many folks watch too much TV, and are not able to think or reason independently and see beneath the surface of things. Unfortunately, Bush will be our president for four more years. God help us. I hope those years go by fast.

 | mystic mango (0) 12/22/2004 | This surprised me because I was sure that everyone would hate Bush after what he did to our country and our troops. But oh well, he's the president and for four more years I'll have to listen to him. I respect him a little more now that the election is over, but I'm still surprised that so many voted for him.

 | middlefinger (4) 12/05/2004 | Kerry is a very classy guy. would've made a great president. I was very surprised (and slightly stomach upset)by the outcome of the '04 presidential election. BUT...after thoughtful consideration, I decided that it is best for BUSH to wipe his own behind. He created this 'war on terrorism' mess, so he needs to be made to act like a growna**ed man and clean it up!

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 11/04/2004 | OK, I was surprised. Not stunned, I thought with all Bush's negatives brought out during the campaign, many of which seemed to stick, with a devious, agenda-driven media, an unpopular war going on and the threat of an onslaught of young voters all stoked up and ready to attack the voting process, it looked pretty bleak for Bush/Cheney. On the other hand, Senators are seldom elected President, avowed, unashamed liberals are seldom elected, candidates from the Northeast are seldom elected and if you say anything like I will only raise taxes . . . the American people usually stop listening there. The liberal base was angry and motivated, Hollywood and rock stars were trying to help, Bill Clinton went all the way to Arkansas (he lost Arkansas) for him and Osama gave an eloquent performance which should have helped him. October surprises all came from his fans and the GDP figures and stock market showed late lackluster performance, but it all blew up in their faces. I'm most surprised at the disparity in popular vote and the Senate and House seats gained by Bush simultaneously. Very unusual for a sitting President.
