 | abichara (66) 12/05/2004 | George Bush on average increased his winning margin across many states, both Democratic and Republican, by about 4 points from 2000. Given this national trend, it comes to no surprise that Bush actually ended up winning Florida by about 300,000 votes or 3.5 percentage points. Indeed, even in blue states like NY and Connecticut, Bush increased his margin by about 8 percentage points. All of these notions that there is a significant cultural and moral gap between the Northeast and the West Coast and the rest of the nation are severly overblown by a media looking for easy correlates. Bush actually nationwide performed a lot better than he did in 2000, not just in the South. I believed that Kerry was going to win FL and the election the day before election day, but Bush overperformed in the suburban areas of the state, especially Tampa and Orlando. Rural areas went even more overwhelmingly for the President. As opposed, Kerry slightly underperformed in the SE coast, a Dem. stronghold, thus costing him the state. At the end of the day, Republicans had a better turnout machine here, which is what counted.

 | EschewObfuscation (71) 11/06/2004 | The significance of this state, and Bush's margin, is that it is as close to a microcosm of Americans as you can find, with slightly more keen attention paid to the Social Security system. Winning this state easily will be used by the Bush Admin to advance its initiation of private SocSec. accounts, and rightly so. If anyone would have been paranoid about it, it would be God's waiting room.
