George Bush was the first President since his father in 1988 to score an outright majority in the popular vote. Every President through the 1990's won the Presidency with only a plurality vote. This can be attributed to the lack of support that 3rd Party candidacies received this year. Bush certainly did run very strong in the popular vote, winning over 3.5 million more votes than John Kerry. The big surprise is that he was able to improve on his 2000 popular vote is several states up to 35% in some instances. The reason why is that Bush was more successful this time around in courting suburban women voters. Security and terrorism was the top issue and Bush won over these voters who were concerned about this. Both parties were able to mobilize their core supporters, but the Republicans had the upper hand in enthusiasm, thus they got the election.

Something bothers me about the way this item is phrased - I'm not sure I can define it, but I'll try. It's almost as though there is an inference that it's a story (or a surprise) that Bush should win, let alone get over 50% of the popular vote. What's such a big story about a candidate who wins getting more than half the popular vote? Just because the past couple of elections have been won by electoral and not popular votes doesn't mean that it is now an established formula that that's the way it always has to be. Come on - are some people surprised that perhaps over half the voting population actually preferrred Bush over Kerry?

George Bush's popular vote was seven times that which Al Gore received in 2000. For the past four years we have heard a number of people say that the popular vote should be the deciding factor in an election. That point of view has been silent since Bush's victory.

My lord Ignatius, the man won with a record number of popularity votes and your telling me that he wasn't popular enough for you?! I get that your ticked at the American people's understanding of the issues that lead them to see Bush was a better man for the job, but don't drink the DNC kool-aid! Anyway, I was surprised because of the millions of dollars spent on making Bush look like a liar and the extrodinary usage of race and gender baiting by the Dems.
