My favorite actor on this list, but like Randyman, I like him even more as the cynical good guy. Did he play a bad guy as Captain Queeg in "The Caine Mutiny?" Something to think about...

This is mostly in his early roles, like Duke Mantee in the Petrified Forest, but his greatest roles incorporate moral ambivalence that is truly amazing. His work in Key Largo, High Sierra, the Maltese Falcon, the Harder They Fall, and Treasure of the Sierra Madre particularly stand out.
