I agree that Jack's backstory is not particularly earth shattering-Smug quack rapes Bai Ling's character to get a tattoo? Their scenes were so painful to watch. Update: Three stars for new EMO druggie doctor. Kattttttte, we weren't meant to leave the island and that we have to go back. The writers finally gave an edge to Saint Jack.

I'm clearly in the minority it seems but Jack is my favorite character on the show. Fox is an excellent actor and everytime we see Jack, it seems that their is some intense undercurrent of emotion just beneath the surface. I love the fact that Jack is a control freak and he does not like being pushed around--especially by the others. I was as pissed as Jack was when, early in the second season, the Others forced Jack to give up his guns when Kate was captured. I hope he kills a dozen or so Others in season 2.

What a terrible pr*ck however, being the doctor, he is the most useful charecter on the Island, but on of the least likable, he is hard to warm up to and I hate the gen Xy tattoos which do not seem to fit in with any reasonanble doctor charecter.

I have to give credit to the actor who plays the role of Jack for a fair amount of subtlety and detachment. It would have been easy for a character who is this nice and who is such a strong stand-up guy to come off as sappy and too good to be true.

The hero Doctor who keeps busy trying to take care of rest of survivors. He often wonders why others don't step up and doesn't really want to be the leader.

Jack is sort of the rock of the cast. He doesn't have the inner turmoil that the others have and his back story isn't full of suspense or anything, but he's a good leader. He's sensible and friendly and he obviously cares about people.

Jack is a great guy and a great leader, but truth be told he's kinda boring. His backstory is not particularly earth-shattering, and he doesn't deliver the same brand of funny lines as Sawyer and Charlie. But every show needs a bland main-character-hero-guy, and Jack is LOST's.
