DJ called race 40 years. His entire body of work is brilliant and gave license to every caller to do more. Probably time to slip softly into that retired grace we hope for, but I'd not be the one to say, "Dave, that 'down the stretch' thing isn't working."The arrogance of the average comments among reviewers reminds me most guys my age, historians maybe, or just old enough to remember Sunday Silence, don't know about tech. Cheer for Dave. He won't be in the booth much longer.

Just flat-out awful.

His annoying 'and down the stretch they come' catch phrase needs to be retired. He is so worried about using it in big races, he misses calling horses making moves because he has to work it in there. Overrated

For me Dave Johnson is the voice of American Racing. I first heard him call the Triple Crown races on British Television, and on the Armed Forces Radio. His calls were exciting, and I loved his "Down The Stretch They Come" Along with Trevor Denman they are head and shoulders above the rest. Surprised that Dave Johnson was not prized away from ABC, when the Breeders' Cup began in 1984?

AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME! That phrase he would yell in the lane was the greatest single line I have ever heard in the game.
