A cheap piece of junk, but inexpensive and easy to produce, and reasonably effective.

This basically was a piece of junk, but easy to produce and the Brits made tons of them. The Brit paras used them and Sten was airdropped to lots of resistance fighters. It used the 9MM Parabellum pistol round. In the movies when you see British paratroopers firing a little weapon with the magazine sticking out to the side, that is the Sten.

As with the BREN, the EN in Sten stands for Enfield. The S and T refer to the gun's designers, Shepherd and Turpin. The Sten was cheap to produce and gave British Tommies some auto firepower at the squad level.
