You may avoid controversy, but if your reviews are dull they may be ignored, and you won't even get funny votes.

lmorovan makes an interesting point. However, it's not so much who you 'side' with as it is making sure your opinion has mass appeal (if 'helpful' votes are your primary goal). Therefore, rating controversial topics can get one lots of 'helpful' votes, but only if you express the current socially acceptable point of view.

Maybe, but back when we had "helpful" "unhelpful" I racked up a huge unhelpful count for a review on Watermelon, plus a few nasty messages.

I never realized the passion that melons could excite.

not such a bad thing to do.sometimes we need to comment on other subjects other than religious or political. those are two subjects that bring a lot of emotions to this site. so rating anything even if it is silly is a nice change. after all RATEITALL is for any kind of subjects for comments.

Hitting the light stuff when everyone is bitchy is a welcome change to certain reviewers, I find.

Indeed. But make sure you always side with those who get the most helpful votes. Never disagree or you get the funny ones. Don't worry, no one will find out you're a hypocrite.

Ignatius makes a good point. Usually the controversial topics are in politics or religion and when people feel you may disagree with them just so, they'll slap you with an unhelpful.
