 | Wawok (0) 07/23/2008 | I am a K-9 handler and loved the results that I've seen. their stools are smaller and their coats are much better. We had them on Eukanuba for awhile and notice that there was blood in the stools. Since they have been on Canidae, no blood. However, since they are going to a smaller bag and keeping the same price, I, may be shopping around for something different for our K-9 partners. Afterall, Can't afford to have 17 sickly dogs because of the different formula.

 | pugsofcolorlover1 (0) 07/16/2008 | I am a pug owner and breeder and I had been using Canidae for several years with excellent results until they cut the corners and instilled changes into thier foods which caused digestive upset and even allergies, and when I went in for my last bag I even noticed they "sneekily" cut 5lbs from the 40lb bag of maintenance to charge more without informing their loyal customers. I am not liking what I see happening to this company, and am in the process of researching better foods and companies with more integrity. I will be writting an article on what I find out and what I change to and advocate for our puppies and adults.
This is very disappointing to say the least. :(

 | boxerdogs (0) 07/13/2008 | Well too bad for Canidae, they have lost a customer. I also have recently joined a Boxer Forum, and all the blogs written about canidae are the same. So, we are on our last bag, and moving into making our own food for the dogs. Everytime I think I have found a good food the companies have to go and screw it all up..So we are done with the kibble bagged food..Bye Bye Canidae..Too bad you are dropping low on the totem pole!!!

 | peachesmom (0) 07/12/2008 | Canidae has just changed their ingrediants, poundage on bags and most importantly, the plant that processes their food. The new plant has had more law suits against them than any other and recently had to pay out 3.1 million dollars from a 2005 law suit. BUYER BEWARE - Canidae has made a very poor choice here. We do not know where their ingrediants are now sourced in. It may say it was made in the USA, but that does not mean the ingrediants are from the US. They have changed the herring meal to Ocean Fish Meal. As long as they name it as a meal, they do not have to say how the meal is preserved. It could be chemically preserved, we just do not know. There seem to be more fiber sources, which means your meat content will be lower. I know of one store that has had several of the new bags brought back. Be sure - whatever you decide to feed - to call the company and ask questions.

 | Mayday11 (0) 07/11/2008 | Canidae has changed their formula on the Lamb and Rice as well. They advertised in prominate labeling on the bag, "Now with Fresh Lamb" and in smaller, lighter print "and diversified carbohydrates". The Fresh Lamb label is very easy to see....not so much the other (unless you are looking for it) I am also told by one of their sales reps that this product is now being made at the same facility as Diamond dog foods. The change in the formulation, I was told, was due to the availability of other carbohydrate sources and financial considerations. I discovered the formulation change after feeding the new Lamb and rice diet to my 3 German Shepherd dogs ( Who have been eating this product for 18 mos.). One of my dogs has serious food allergies to barley and tomato pomice ( a filler they now use.). My poor dog started itching, scratching and vomiting. Next day with diarrhea also. I have E-mailed the company of my displeasure over their apparent comcern for their own bottom line and lack of concern for the health and well being of our pets. Shame on them. I am no longer a Canidae consumer.

Just a note concerning Canidae. They have changed the formula for their All Life Stages formula recently. Go to the website www.canidae.com for more info. | Smokey5290 (0) 07/02/2008 | It is great to read all these blogs about Canidae dog food, mostly All Life Stages. I thought I was alone being super-concerned about my dog's nutrition/health. I am ex-army dog handler, and my black lab & golden retr. started as pups I raised for PAWS WITH A CAUSE; dogs meant for the disabled, the dogs flunked so now their mine.
I share many of these blogs concern for quality of Canidae purchased recently. I used Canidae 4 months ago and had no problem. Following the dog food poison problem of 2007 I mostly go all homemade raw for two dogs. However, began to buy commercial food to add just handful to raw, like sprinkes on a donut. Over years have switched to all premium brands: EVO, Barking at Moon, etc.
Ten days ago bought Canidae ALS and made 75/25% mix of regular raw and Canidae; the Canidae amount was almost nothing. Immediately black lab & golden retr. had diarreha, some all liquid, then very mushy, then all liquid.etc. After ten days they are improving slightly, I'm try to give Canidae benefit of the doubt, but the blacklab has a cast iron stomach, and between your blogs and my dogs I'M SUSPECTING SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THIS BATCH OF CANIDAE. No other problems exist now, they are alert, very energetic, and coat/skin are OK. But there should not be this severe diarreha for over ten days on a 75/25 mix.
From your blogs, it bothers me many of you report Canidae DOES NOT return your emails. There is also an iternet report of Canidae dog food containing a pain killer; report seems unconfirmed or confusing at this time. Canidae Co. better wise-up and answer its customer's emails, and put tighter controls on quality assurance because something appears wrong recently.
Let's keep watching Canidae, and hope they respond to us.

 | bjbundy (0) 06/21/2008 | My standard poodle, Bella has had an ear infection every other month for the past year. Up until I switched her from Eukanuba For large dogs to a 50/50 mix of Caninae and Merrick (any flavor). I switched back in November and she has not had an infection since. No smelly ears! She also loves it. Her old food she would leave in the bowl and reluctantly munch on it later in the day. Now with her new healthy food, she starts on it early and it is gone by the middle of the day. Great dog food!!

 | dyna (0) 06/01/2008 | I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR BETTER FOOD FOR MY BEST FRIEND...DAKOTA. WE'VE HAD THIS BEAUTIFUL FAITHFUL WHITE GERMAN SHEPHERD FOR 9 YEARS, AND SHE STILL THINKS SHE'S A PUPPY. IT KILLS ME TO THINK I ALMOST KILLED MY DOG WITH THIS CANIDAE PLATINUM. I'M LUCKY MY DOG IS SMARTER THAN I AM WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING POISON, AND IT ONLY TOOK ONE MEAL TO MAKE HER START VOMITING BILE, GET VERY WEAK, AND NOT EVEN WANT TO GO OUTSIDE. I MADE HER BOILED CHICKEN & RICE AND SHE WAS HAPPY AGAIN, TRIED TO INTRODUCE A LITTLE OF THE CANIDAE IN WITH THE CHICKEN THE NEXT DAY....SHE WOULDN'T GO NEAR IT. DAKOTA GOT SICK ONE OTHER TIME WHEN SHE ACCIDENTLY GOT SOME TURKEY SKIN, SO WE KNEW THE SYMPTOMS OF BAD FOOD. I GAVE IT A RATING OF ONE ONLT BECAUSE THERE WERE NO MINUSES, THIS FOOD IS DANGEROUS, I TRULY GIVE IT A "MINUS FIVE" FOR HURTING MY BEST FRIEND! DON'T TRUST IT!

 | bunnislippers (0) 05/28/2008 | We have had our German Shorthaired Pointer since he was 8 weekes old. When we got him from the breeder he was on a dog food I had never heard of and found out it was really bad. We had slowly transitioned him to Iams, he had horrible diarrhea, treated him for everything under the sun... x-rays for possible bowel obstruction, giardia, you name it. Switched food (very, very slowly) several more times. Hundreds of dollars later and no better our vet told us about Canidae All Life Stages. He told us that the you can feed your dog anything but make sure that the protiens are coming from a top quality source. He told us that he would rank Canidae in the top 5 dog foods if not #1. He gave me many other details, the food has a good range of probiotics, balanced omega 3 and 6, and on and on. Our dog guzzled it up, no more diarrhea, he goes less frequently than on Iams and Science Diet, his coat has never looked better! I do supplement our dog with a raw diet to get extra protien because he is extremely active and burns through his calories. I would absolutely tell anyone to use this product. If you are unsure of a good food I would check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com they do a great job at breaking down each food and telling the pros and the cons.

 | muellerpups (0) 05/26/2008 | My wife and I have been feeding Canidae all life stages for alittle over a year and we love it. We breed labradoodles and our puppies do really well on it. In the last five years we have fed Iams, Royal Canin, Nutro, and Eukanuda. The difference in the foods compared to Canidae is there hair coats are much thicker and healthier looking. The adults and puppies stools are solid and not running like all the others. If you have experienced that before you know its not fun. I would recommend this dog food to anybody. You can find it at Canidae.com and there is a location search on there sight where you can find a pet store in your area.

 | doggylover1 (0) 05/19/2008 | I am reading the multiple reviews here and such differnces. I was talking to quite a few people and this is one of the best brands they recommended. I right now am switiching my dogs over to this but it is gradual process don't want them to get upset tummys from the switch. It is a slow process but they do really like the canidae als original. I from all I have read here am hoping I am making the right choice! I thought this was much better in reading the ingrediants than any other foods so I am continuing on with the transition and will hope for the best.

 | GMO1379 (0) 05/12/2008 | I've been using Canidae for my puppy for a little over 2 weeks now and the results are good. I was feeding her Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy, but she was pooping 6 times a day and in large quanity! Now on Canidae she's only going about 3-4 times a day and stool volume is much less. Only thing I don't like is her stool is softer then I'd like it be (it's not loose but it's not hard.)
She also loves the taste, eats it all in just a few minutes.
Overall good food, I'd recommend it.

 | rae8610 (0) 05/08/2008 | Where should I start....I do not recommend this food for American Cockers what-so-ever. I Bought into the Holistic Marketing Hype and I fed this food for 8 months and had nothing but an array of problems with Coat, Growth, Reproduction, Poo Eating, My dogs constantly hungry, Nutritional Defiencies, Skeletar Problems with Puppies raised on this, etc. What a huge mistake. One of my females is still not cycling and she is now 2 months late. So, I requested a Complete Nutrtional Analysis and Canidae refuses to give it out. They said they would release it to a vet but he has to sign a waiver stating he will not release it to the Public. Makes you wonder what they are hiding. Their lack of Vitamin A, E and Protein is just not suited for Cockers or any other breed that requires adequate amounts of these Nutrients.

 | Jilly66 (0) 04/22/2008 | I have a five month old golden who was on Royal Canin Maxi Baby Dog and did great on it. After 5 months it is recommended to move up to the Maxi Puppy 32. I gradually gave him the food and within two days he had the worst diarrhea! Poor thing! I then researched and tried Blue Buffalo for large breed puppies. He didn't like the taste and his stool was HUGE and very soft almost like pudding. I am now trying Canidae ALS and let me tell you, he LOVES the taste. I put some of Blue Buffalo on one side of bowl and Canidae on the other and he gobbled up the Cannidae and left the Blue Buffalo. I am in hopes his stools will firm up. I will repost with an update!

 | Nanobaby (0) 04/21/2008 | I had my dogs on this for about a month and all I can say is...sketchy. Their poops were grainy on it, still firm and while one of my dogs' allergy symptoms were not as bad she was still itchy so it didn't really help too much. My main concern is that apparently, the batches are highly inconsistent in quality as well as that rumour about the painkiller acetaminophen being found in some batches of Canidae. While this is, ingredient-wise better than junk like Science Diet or Purina anything, it is too questionable. In addition, I have heard that it is impossible to get a response from the company if you contact them. That in itself bothers me.

 | swampchick (0) 03/25/2008 | I have 2 mini daschunds both 4yrs old. After researching dog foods extensively, I gave Canidae a try. Well let me tell you, they have been eating Canidae for 2 weeks now and I see major improvements They are driving me nuts with their new found energy! Coats are shiny and eyes are bright. My female had stopped itching her face all the time. Poops are 1/2 the size. Recently routine blood work showed both dogs had elevated liver enzymes. There is simply no reason for this except the food they were eating (Iams weight control) So, if their energy is related to how much better they feel on this food, well I am sold for life. Our vet will recheck livers next month. If there is improvement, well I will know why.It will be because of the Canidae. Fingers crossed!

 | BillNY914 (0) 03/24/2008 | I am feeding my Greyhound Canidae as part of a rotation. I realize that not one food is perfect for all dogs, and feeding one food all the time is not optimal, and I do not buy into the "All life stages" advertising. I do feel however, that this is a great food for my dog. After doing a lot of research on dog foods, I found that what I had previously been feeding him was not necessarily what was best for him. I went through eight months of diarrhea when I first got him as a rescue. I have finally found a food that doesn't cause diarrhea, the transition was great and his coat and his stool are great! (or greyt as they say in grehound land). I was going to try Wellness, but found that is was unreasonably priced in my area. Canidae for it's nutritional content is an excellent value. I am going to stick with this and rotate it with By Nature, put out by Blue Seal. He had great results with that food, is reasonably priced and has good ingredients. I must say that the pork and sweet potatoe version while he loved it did give him gas.... and a Greyhound fart can clear a room! I have already recommended this food to others as part of their dog's diet.

 | llokpo (0) 03/09/2008 | I am a recent convert to Canidae All Life Stages, my three GSDs (Ages 15 months, 23 months, 9 years) and one schnauzer (age 12) have been on this food for two months. I spent a lot of time researching dog foods throughout December and determined that the Canidae ALS was my most affordable option for a premium dog food. I liked the company's "Declaration of Ingredients" on their website and my research determined that the food was a solid choice.
I can say that all the dogs like the taste of the food and everyone cleans their bowls. It hasn't been long enough to see any drastic positive changes, but I have nothing negative to report except for it seems like my 23 month old GSD has gone from having breath with no offensive odor to a faint fishy smell. I would say the other three dogs have no change in breath odor. I have checked her teeth/mouth and they appear to be the healthy white teeth she had prior to the switch, so I don't believe it's related to any mouth or teeth problems.
I am happy with the food so far, but it has gone up in price 2.00 per 40 lb bag in the two months I have been a consumer... I am hoping it doesn't continue to climb in price, but I realize the price of trucking has gone up with fuel costs on the rise.

 | bellemusiquegurlie (0) 02/24/2008 | I like the ingredients in canidae and it is the first food my lhasa puppies actually ate on their own...they are EXTREMELY picky since their breeders had show lhasa apsos and although they had low grade food, they had human grade, tasty add-ins. I was concerend about the all life stages idea and wanted an actual puppy formula since the canidae seemed very very low on protein and fats that small breed puppies need for energy and growth. I was planning to go back to it as they got older and their needs in proteins and fats lower but i decided no. It is a good food but there are many better ones out there.

 | JRTluver (0) 02/13/2008 | My mom's dog (a mix of a terrier & chinese chen) was skin & bones when she adopted him. She was feeding him a good quality brand from the pet store & the vet said that he wasn't underweight -that's just how his body is. After the food recall, she found Candidae. I went to visit her after a couple of weeks & saw such a difference in his coat & hair. It's like his skin had gotten thicker & hair shinier. Unbelievable!! I'm going to start feeding it to my Jack Russell. People have NO IDEA what is in the typical dog food. It's like poison.

He is now 12. Unfortunately, he developed a very serious health problem.
He began to bite his feet and tail and scratch his eyes. He was scratching really badly. His skin was swollen and his coat was flaky and loosing a lot of fur. The vet gave him medicine but it only helps him for 2-3 days.
I'm not sure if Canidae is responsible for my dog's problem but I fed him it for a long term and it should have something to do with this problem.

Of the foods I have tried, Canidae has been one of the best. She is excited to eat and eats her entire bowl. There is no soft stool, diarrhea, or gas. It has the perfect amount of protein and uses rice as the main Carbohydrate instead of potato, which is better digestively for the dogs on the long run. Shiny, soft coat. Clear eyes and seems that her teeth look better too. Great food!!!

 | DobeyLover (0) 10/22/2007 | I've been feeding ALS to my Doberman since he was a puppy (about 1.5 years) and overall, been satisfied with it. This is the food the breeder recommended due to its quality and the low likelihood that it would cause bloat (not sure how scientific a claim that is). However, I'm not happy with his coat. He's had "dandruff" which we've been able to curb with a lanolin conditioner, but his hair has remained thin for several months. The dry skin could be caused by the dry climate we live in, but the thin coat and shedding is the bigger issue for me. The breeder recommended adding Omega-3 fish oil to the food to give him more fatty acids and I think this is helping. But, I have to wonder if his condition could be caused by an allergy or other problem with this food. Has anyone else experienced similar issues possibly related to Canidae? In any case, I'll probably try rotating him to Innova or Orijen next to see if there's any improvements.

 | noblenewf (0) 09/29/2007 | I've been feeding my dogs ultra premium, holistic dog food for a few years now. As a subscriber to several holistic dog periodicals, I've done my fair share of reading in terms of canine nutrition and pet foods. I am by no means an expert, but I can attest to what I've witnessed in terms of the health and vitality of my dogs. I've tried about every ultra premium food available including Innova, Evo, Wellness, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, as well as many others. For various reasons, none of these worked for my dogs, however, they are all excellent foods in their own right. Most of the issues I found were loose stools and digestive problems with a few coat problems here and there. One of my pups, a 5 month old Golden Retriever, had terrible problems with loose stools for the first few months of his life. I had tried so many different holistic brands and still found no solution to the problem. I was at my wits end. I decided to give Canidae a try. A friend of ours is a K-9 Officer and the department he works for uses Canidae ALS for their K-9 dogs. They've been using it for years and have had excellent results. I was also familiar with the name from the Whole Dog Journal's recommended food list. After two days the loose stools were gone! He went nuts at meal time in anticipation of his kibble and my other pup, 18 month old Newfoundland, who is a very finicky eater, would try to steal his food! We decided to switch both dogs over to Canidae ALS. The ingredients are everything I was looking for in a holistic food and my dogs are eager to eat, have beautiful coats and are in exceptional health. Both of their coats are picture perfect. In fact, we get daily compliments on how beautiful both of them are. Our dogs have grown evenly, have a zest for life and are perfect in terms of weight. Our vet has asked us what supplements we are using and was shocked to hear that we don't add anything extra- it's the great food! Even growth is a common problem with large and especially giant breeds like Newfs but he has grown evenly and is in perfect proportion. With the recent dog food recalls I have had peace of mind knowing that my furry friends are safe and getting the best nutrition available. In addition, Canidae is fairly priced- especially in comparison to some other popular brands. Don't hesitate to give it a try. You will be amazed at the results. We will be Canidae customers for life.

 | debsplace9 (0) 09/29/2007 | Great dog food! We have 2 pitbulls that are 2 yrs old and a 14 year old Sheltie. They all get Canidae for all life stages. The pits are doing well, their coats are shiny, stools are firm and they don't pass as much gas as before ( Pits are notoriously gassy) The Sheltie is what amazes me. She has regained alot of her mobility and energy. She has arthritis and hasn't been very active the last couple of years, but with Canidae she seems to be doing much better. She even tries to run and play with the younger dogs!

 | darekennel (0) 09/23/2007 | A GREAT food. We wean our Flat Coated Retriever pups on it and they stay on it for life. Their coats are beautiful and shiney. Unlike some other foods it does not turn our black dogs red. We show them in both field and conformation. This food provides them the energy they need for a full days work...be it in the ring or in the field. We recommend it to all our puppy owners. Believe me we have tried MANY food and even did the BARF diet for awhile...but I am satisfied with Canidae.

 | chrissywtsn (0) 09/18/2007 | I am writing about Canidae All Life Stages canned food (Chicken, Lamb and Fish Formula). Tried the Chicken and Rice dry food, but my pup hated it and had vomiting, loose stools and bad paw-chewing problem till we took him off the food. Now I decided to try him on the canned food. Price-wise, it's more affordable than Solid Gold or even AvoDerm. But what really shocks me (unpleasantly) is the amount of rice in the food! I can say it contains almost 50% of rice grains, and this is unexpected because in Canidae's ingredient list, brown rice is listed as no.6, which is the same as Solid Gold Turkey & Ocean Fish, Chicken & Liver canned. But in Solid Gold, the grains are almost non-existent. Even in Solid Gold's Lamb & Barley canned where brown rice is listed as ingredient no.4, I didn't find so much rice content. Could this be the reason why Canidae is cheaper - that it's actually using more grain despite claiming to have more meat?? I also noticed that the food is really oily (could very well be the sunflower & flaxseed oils), which may be especially good for dogs with dry skin. I have just fed 2 cans, so haven't seen much improvement on my pup. However, I did noticed that as soon as I switched him from Solid Gold to Canidae, he started licking and chewing on his paws very aggressively like he did when he was on Canidae's dry food. No vomiting or loose stools, though. Another reason why it's 2 star is because just this morning while watching my pup eat, I noticed a small piece of cooked, splintered bone. I was curious, so I poked around, and to my awful surprise, found MANY MORE small pieces of such bones. I don't know about the first can; I didn't look, as I never thought they'd be so careless as to include cooked splintered bone in it. (How on earth did that happen?) But I guess these days, you can never be too certain about anything anymore. Btw, sure you've heard of the acetaminophen found in Canidae dry food. Has anyone's dog(s) fallen sick lately? I'm getting worried coz my pup seems to sleep a lot more lately and I'm wondering if it's the food I'm feeding him. Thanks first!

 | slpearson (0) 09/16/2007 | I have been feeding my 16 week old goldendoodle puppy Canidae for the past four weeks and while his stools are very healthy unfortunately he doesn't seem to like it much. For the first three and a half weeks after bringing him home I fed him Merricks Puppy Platter which he enjoyed however, even though I introduced it very slowly, he had terrible diarrhea.
I was wondering if someone could suggest a premium alternative or perhaps a gravy to make the Canidae more palatable. From reading other posts I understand that it is not good to feed a young large breed puppy a diet too high in protein. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

 | deb371 (0) 09/07/2007 | It is an excellant food for some dogs, but not all dogs. I had been using it for 3 and a half months, but had to take all my bostons off of it. Their coats became very dry and they were shedding like crazy. My Yorkies did very well on it though.

 | flipgirl (0) 09/06/2007 | I'm not currently feeding Canidae but I did try it on my puppy. She did not like it. I didn't like the texture of the kibble- it looks like it's overcooked. However, in my amateur opinion, Canidae is a good dog food but there are better out there. I do like that it is for all life stages which is especially important for larger breeds in avoiding bone problems.

 | pwcox (1) 09/01/2007 | Canidae has been part of my lab's food rotation since he was 8 weeks old. It is an excellent product and very reasonably priced. For those you who feed Canidae, I just want to share information concerning Canidae Frequent Buyer program. For every 12 bags (same size, for example 40 lbs) of Canidae product you purchase, you can get 1 free bag (same size, for example, 40 lbs) from Canidae. You will need to save the 12 UPC codes and date of purchase information. Fill the Frequent Buyer Program card (you will need to contact Canidae through their website and ask for Canidae to send the program envelope and information), mail it in and then they will send you a coupon for the free bag.

 | wisegirlz (0) 08/23/2007 | Was highly recommended. Great ingredients. However, my dog showed very little interest in either the dry or the canned.
