Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Paulo Freire) 5

Paulo Friere continues to inspire and motivate people in this classic publication. Working with the poor, he is open to learning from them and passing along their insights and experiences. We all can learn from them!

Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Paulo Freire) 1

Freire has just about the most bizarre misreading of Hegel in all of human history. He takes the dialectic as an educational device, and outright plagiarizes parts of the Phenomenology, but overlooks the key element of the relationship between the lord and bondsman. It's not really all that shocling, considering Fanon's equally wrong interpretation (which the title of PotO obviously refers to).

The whole system has holes you could sail the Titanic through. I like the use of dialectic, but the elimination of authority is outright absurd. Additionally, the way it's phrased reminds me of soviet propaganda.

Oh, then there's the practical problems with it. The kids are already illiterate and can't read. Yet, school policies prohibit me from teaching grammar or spelling.

I'm legally unable to, for the most part, discipline them in any manner under the current system of american educational incompetence. Let's completely get rid of all authority and become children's friends! That'll really help the kids learn and be accountable for their actions and develop responsibility. I'm sure teens will have the foresight to realize the importance of grammar and math. After all, 12 year olds know what's best for themselves, right?

One of the most truly egregious educational texts ever written. It'd be nice if instead of looking to the crackpot theory of the month, educrats would wake up and realize the problem is a lack of authority, administrative and financial misconduct, discipline, and teaching content rather than "reading skills" aka standardized test-taking techniques.

If you want to read educational philosophy and want two different perspectives, read Dewey's "Democracy and Education" or Gentile's "Reform of Education". They understood philosophy and how education operates in the civilized world. They actually started several schools that actually worked, too, versus say, the entire country of Brazil.

Really, think about it this way - should we be taking lesson from a country with a 90% literacy rate, which only has mandatory grades 1-8, and where the teachers go on strike frequently? Many children in brazil stop attending as early as FIRST GRADE. Recently there have been movements to extend the school day until 5pm.

Does this sound ideal to you?
