This is a great book for law enforcement officers and their families. Dr. Gilmartin explains many of the emotional difficulties experienced by officers in a way that makes it easy to understand and relate to.

If you are a cop, get this book and apply its principles it will help keep you sane in a world of insanity. If you're the spouse of a cop, get this book and apply its principles it could save the marriage! If you have a friend who is a cop, and you cannot understand why a cop thinks, talk, walks and breaths like they do - get this book. I have been a cop in excess of 20 years, this wisdom came very late in my profession - it should be MANDATORY for everyone who is a cop, want's to be a cop, calls a cop a friend. I teach this, I condone this, I preach this. Thank you Dr. Gilmartin

A small, powerful text to remind the entire law enforcement community, from the Director or Chief to the newest cadet, of the balance needed to pursue and complete a law enforcement career with a sane vision and balanced living of life with family, friends, and loved ones. It is often presumed that law enforcement officers are "above all that," and simply "suck it up" while going on to the next assignment. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Gilmartin in a scholarly but simple manner engages us in the reality of an officer's emotional life, which in time always will effect his physical, psychological, and spiritual lives as well. His comments are highly operable in other caregiver professions as well.

I have been a member of the California Highway Patrol for 25 years and I developed a presentation that I show to veteran CHP officers and all CHP Cadets during their training, and Dr. Gilmartin's information is one of the cornerstones of the presentation. The book has spread like a wildfire within the CHP, and is an EXCELLENT book for describing the personality shift that occurs when we chose a career in public safety. I tell the Cadets to get two copies in case they think they won't need to read it because IF they DON'T read it, then when their mate finally gives up and leaves with HALF of everything, they won't have to tear their only copy in two pieces. This is the best book I've ever read about understanding why we changed after becoming cops, and how to live a better life, and still enjoy the job, and more importantly, my family before it was too late.

P.S. My wife also LOVED reading the book and NOW she understands why I am the way I am....and that is Great when the other half REALLY understand. The only thing better than the book is seeing Dr. Gilmartin's presentation in person as he is a very busy man giving presentations all over the country at every level of public safety.
And to those that think I was paid to write this, you're wrong....but I understand your cynicism since I am from the same mold.
