I audio-booked this one during my morning commute. I have to be honest, that for the first 1/3 of the book or so, I really didn't care for it at all. Neither of the two main characters, Wanderer nor Melanie interested me much. And the book just took *forever* to get the plot moving. There was just SO much background information and mundane activities documented in full that I very nearly gave up on the story. That said, I'm glad that I didn't. It's a fine story that by the end I was really enjoying and like all good books I was sorry to see it end. For the uninitiated, this book is about 20% sci-fi, 80% romance. But if you have the patience to get through the dreadfully boring first part of the book, you are in for a treat at the end. The audiobook was well read. The reader (female) does a really good job of telling the story from the alien point of view. She has a bit of a monotone, but that is very appropriate considering the part she is reading. Also she does a good job having distinct voices for all the other characters, even including the male characters. All in all I enjoyed this book very much... but be warned that you'll need a lot of patience to get into the meat of this story.

What an incredible and new idea Stephanie Meyer had when creating The Host. It could have been up there with Koontz and King, but it just fell apart. I found myself getting agitated from the dragging and repetition. If you have it, read it. If there are other books you want to get to, go for those.

As someone who enjoyed the Twilight books, I was eager to see how Stephenie Meyer's adult novel would compare. I will admit that the very beginning of the book nearly lost my interest, as I am someone who typically does not enjoy much science fiction. However, when the main characters of the book are introduced and then developed, Meyer's strengths begin to show. The love stories are what keep you reading this book, and the love stories will be what make me read it again.

"The Host" was a great book. It had a variety of different components to it that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Don't be scared away by the length - it's worth it!
