I think it would be nice to share some similar interests...though I also think that if u had a friend that was exactly the same as u, u would likely miss out on experiences that u may truly end up enjoying and be positive for u

While it might not be absolutely essential, it's kind of hard to be friends with someone who doesn't have similar interests.

I think initially, this is what brings friends together. From there you may begin to appreciate the differances. When friendships start to slip away, it is usually because they lose their commonality and shared interest. But of course, there are exceptions.

Similar interests is probably what spurs most friendships. How do you hang out with someone that doesn't share any of your interests? What would you do?

Sharing some similar interests is nice, but diversity spices things up. You learn a lot from your friends by your differences.

Sharing similar interests isn't nearly as inportant to me as honesty, kindness, or having a sense of humor. I tend to have friends that are all different. I have goth, preppy, popular, sporty, and nerdy friends. Most of the time, I really have nothing in common with any of them, but it gives me some variety in life, it just make it interesting.

Yes indeed. The sharing of similar interests often starts friendships (i.e. meeting a friend at a sporting event or party). I do not expect my friends to agree with everything that I like, but it is probably necessary to maintain a good friendship by finding something that both friends can relate to and enjoy TOGETHER.

Too many times I have been out with people and I have the distinct impression that I'm the only one having fun. Or the only one not having fun, whatever the case may be. In either case, it takes away from my enjoyment, and that's why I think similar interests are very important in a friend.

I can see this as both a reason to bond or a reason to pull apart. For instance, if you are both artists or play the same sport you might have a tendency to get competitive with that common interest and resent one another. Then again, if we’re talking about something more general like enjoying shopping, films, road trips, etc. then I say this could form the basis for the start of a good friendship. I do think other more basic human factors would outweigh this though. After all, people with completely opposite tastes have long lasting, excellent friendships.

Not too important. I have a friend who likes to party, another likes sports, another likes flirting etc. And as long as they don't drag me along their interests are fine with me. But of couse it's important to have at least ONE interest incommon. Otherwise we'd have very little to talk about.

While I don't think friends have to agree about EVERYTHING, you do need to have some things in common so you can do stuff together.
