 | shestolemyjello (1) 05/27/2008 | I've learned a very valuable lesson in exactly how important loyalty is in a friendship. You can know somebody for 20 years, and have that friendship destroyed in a matter of minutes because of a simple lack of loyalty.

 | CastleBee (81) 05/27/2008 | As far as positive and important traits in human relationships, you don’t really have much going for you if you don’t have this from or for someone you consider a friend. Loyalty is a building block and a trait that transcends time, age, economics, and difference of outlook or opinion. Not all friendships are tested in the extreme when it comes to loyalty but, if it does occur, its existence or non-existence can make or break any relationship.

 | myspace-30849171 (1) 05/06/2008 | Probably the most important. Loyal, BTW, doesn't always mean you agree with me. The most loyal friend will be the first to tell you you're wrong or that you're out of line. They're looking out for you, even when you aren't

You are right, Molfan. If only more people had those type of viewpoints. Unfortunately, I think some people have the wrong concept of what true friendship is.

 | Molfan (57) 10/09/2007 | A loyal friend is one of the most important qualities of a good friend to me. they are the who stick by a pal through the good times and bad. they do not dump you for a more interesting friend. they do not go around and spread gossip. And they even defend their friend when they hear gossip about them. Now that is a friend. I can probably count on one hand how many true blue friends I have. I try and be the same kind of friend to them.

 | LastMessenger3 (40) 08/02/2006 | Loyalty is great, but hard to find. I think many people don't entirely understand its concept. Loyalty means being there for one another, support each other, be each others confidants, guides, best friends. Nowadays, loyalty measured in words rather than in actions.

 | DumbBlondeCowgirl (23) 03/18/2006 | Loyalty is very important in friendship. You have to stick by them, even when they aren't at their best. And congratulate them when they are. True friends will be there for you.

 | Gentle Jude (23) 02/11/2006 | This probably one of the most important characteristics in a friend. Loyalty means that you never leave that person, even when they have angered or offended you. You always try to speak well of them or at least speak of them in a positive light (if they have offended you) and you are always there for them. You will never leave them or forsake them. In fact, the level of loyalty shows the level of love because true love and loyalty go together. If someone says they love you, but as soon as trouble comes the friends way or the friend hurts them and then leave them, well, their love for their friend really wasn't deep to begin with. Loyalty knows few boundaries! I try to be as loyal as I possibly can. I also believe loyalty means what you are willing to endure for someone else. One statement of true love is, 'A friend loves at all times, a brother was born for adversity.' I have a few really good friends (they know who they are), they are particularly good friends, one of which whom I call a sister. Well there is probably not very many things I wouldn't go through for her and my other best friend that I know. One of the biggest characteristic of a dog is loyalty. Well, guess whos mans best friend? Well for all those people who just give up on a person as soon as there is trouble or they are really needed, well, learn from the dog, you unfaithful!

 | TB 303 (5) 08/20/2005 | Hard to come by in friends. Embodies most of the best traits in one word. When times get hard most people want nothing to do with you so loyalty is what seperates friends from acquaintances.

 | kattwoman (24) 04/07/2005 | i think this is by far the most important quality. you need to be able to know that person is there for you. even though its number one i dont see that alot in people. i sometimes wish i was able to have the superficial type friendships i see alot have. loyalty plays no part in those. but it seems like they are more likable loyal or not.

 | Randyman (103) 03/20/2005 | As far as friendships go, or any type of relationship for that matter , loyalty is a must. I couldn't be friends with someone who did not have at least some loyalty to me.
(3 voted this helpful, 0 funny and 0 agree) |
 | Bird808 (52) 04/30/2004 | Loyalty is the ball for the dominoe effect in a friendship for me. If their not loyal how can they be dependable, if their not dependable how can they be honest, if their not honest how can they be nice and if their not nice how can they be understanding.

 | Tack (0) 07/09/2003 | Sometimes it takes a little adversity to see who your true friends are, that's why you might have a friend that only later you discover was not really a friend. Here's an example of loyalty: you may have a sibling who annoys you and you may fight all the time, but if someone else starts talking trash about him or her, then you get defensive and stick up for your family. That's why the blood bond is the strongest, you instinctively defend your own. If you can find a friend who is quick to defend you ("has your back"), that's a friend you want to keep. I had a three-year girlfriend who bugged me in one little way, but I didn't say anything because I didn't know if I was being reasonable, but I recently saw some tv show (I wish I could remember which show) where the girlfriend complained to the boyfriend that when he didn't like someone, she didn't like that person either, but he never returned the empathy. That was my problem. There were a couple of people I had serious issues with (for good reasons), but she still socialized with them; her attitude seemed to be that it was my issue alone, and her relationship with these people was completely independent. Now I know it's not just me, that others would expect a little loyalty in a situation like this.

 | kahfess (0) 07/09/2003 | I must admit, when I saw the word “loyalty” on this list, I first thought, “If their not loyal, then their not really your friend, they’re just an acquaintance.” You’ve probably heard the statement “ With friends like those, who needs enemies?” That’s what comes to mind when you speak of having friends that are less than loyal. There is one thing of course, you must realize the difference between someone being a ‘less than loyal’ friend and someone being a ‘truthful’ friend. Sometimes when people are really pushed I think they don’t see the sometimes blurry line.

 | reeny (3) 06/29/2003 | A friend isn't a friend if they're not loyal. If a friend's loyalty is based on material things or somekind of goal they want to attain by being your friend, then it's time to get a new friend.

 | MissPackRat4Jesus (38) 06/27/2003 | In order for me to consider someone a true friend, loyalty must be there. There have been several instances in which I've known people who I thought were friends of mine, and because of petty little arguments, second-handed heresay they may have heard (or whatever the case might be), they just up and walked out of my life. I'm sure that there are many who would completely identify. A true friend sticks by you no matter what. I forgot where it came from, but I have a sign in my house which says it all: "WITH FRIENDS, MISTAKES AREN'T TERMINAL".... well, how true that is! Loyalty is very definitely an important factor in a friendship. No doubt about it!!!

 | kamylienne (77) 04/04/2003 | Loyalty IS important in a friendship; I'm not saying that I'd want them to kiss up to me or anything like that, and if they feel that I'm wrong, I'd want them to tell me honestly what they think. But, I do want to hang out with people who aren't going to talk trash about me when I turn my back, or can keep a secret, or won't ditch me for a stranger (like, making plans to hang out at 7, then calling at 6:45 to tell me that he's going to meet some girl somewhere, then at 7:30 call back and say he ditched her and wants to hang out with me and my boyfriend again; I mean, I know where he's coming from, but it still sucks). Loyalty's a rare quality to come by, it seems, so when you find it, appreciate it.

 | michael_arbor (1) 12/06/2001 | Being true blue is easy until something or somebody else comes along for some people. Extremely integral part of friendship and you would hoope all of your friends are loyal and will do you right, but unfortinately that is not always the case. I think that is the point where you re-assess that relationship and re-consider the degree of friendship you have.

 | magellan (153) 12/05/2001 | I guess more than anything, I want a friend who has my back. Someone who I can count on in any situation - and without condition. Everyone comes across hard times from time to time, and the best way to deal with these things is to have a network of solid, loyal friends.
