Ganesha Goes to Lunch: Classics from Mystic India (Kamla K. Kapur) 5

This book is absolutely beautiful. She re-tells the stories that I have always wanted to hear about. The stories of the Indian culture are fascinating and she tells tem beautifully. As soon as I picked up this book, I had to finish it. What else is there to say other than if you have little kids or nephew and nieces, it's a great book to give them to read.

Ganesha Goes To Lunch is such a beautifully written piece of work that captures the lush and mystical world of ancient India through it's classic tales of the Gods and Goddesses of Hindu religion. Having studied many of the various stories and texts from India I found Ms Kapur's retelling of these tales to be full of life and immediacy, wisdom and magic, and easily accessible for anyone either beginning to learn about eastern cultures or those that know the stories and just want to revisit them in a new and fresh way.

Her writing is clear and fragrant as fresh jasmine growing along the Ganges on a spring morning. Highly Recommend!!

Ganesha Goes to Lunch: Classics from Mystic India (Kamla K. Kapur) 5

Ganesha Goes to Lunch is an artfully woven collection of stories from classic Indian mythology. The Hindu pantheon, which can seem overwhelming with its abundance of gods and godesses, is made pleasantly accessible through beautifully crafted, compelling tales of the lives, loves and unique natures of such deities as Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti.

The stories are thoroughly satisfying in themselves, with gorgeous descriptive detail, and fascinating characters with unique responses to their personal, spiritual conflicts. What's more is that each narrated tale stimulates spiritual contemplation on various aspects of reality: the relationship between female and male, god and devotee, themes such as renunciation, pleasure, materialism, devotion and the nature of the universe.

As a first generation Indian-American, I did not get a chance to know these stories as I would have had I grown up in India. So it was like getting a second chance in hearing them from Ms. Kapur.

Not just a good read, but a wonderful experience!

I love reading this book. I'm reading it for the second time now and I'm loving it just as much as the first time. When I close the book at night after reading a story or two, I go to sleep with a smile on my face and a happy feeling in my heart. I really, really love this book! Thanks!

Fairy tales from the East lent us insight into a new range of contemporary issues and new responces to these temptations, character flaws and daily errs. Through these mythological stories and the choices these characters make, we are invited to be in both the situation and each character in tne story. Their choices then become our story. It is a unique tool for checking in with our values and coming to greater clarity about "what if" I were placed in such a situation myself. Good reading for all ages and an ideal gift for conscience raising without being rude.
