By my estimation, the last time Afganistan was "stable" Genghis Khan was still around.

 | zuchinibut (40) 07/26/2008 | It seems that others have addressed this, but Afghanistan has not been a stable country in a long time. I would argue that the elimination of the Taliban with American support will help towards the long term stabilization of their nation. However, Afghanistan is a long way from what we would consider a stable country.

 | twinmom101 (32) 05/21/2003 | No, this country never was stable, so why are we wasting our times here? Hamid Karzai controls a portion of Kabul that is roughly the size of my living room while war lords reign free through-out the rest of the country. Now the Taliban has re-grouped and we didn't even capture Bin Laden. Aside from the end of persecuting women by the Taliban, our foray into democratizing Afghanistan was another royal waste of money and lives and has done little to stop terrorism as the attacks in Riyahd just proved. With Iraq, Bush is 0-2 in "liberating" countries.

 | Redoedo (40) 04/22/2003 | I concur that Afghanistan never was stable. However, we went in there and destroyed that country, so how about we lend a helping hand in cleaning it up? After all, I always thought that the United States was the courier of freedom. We cannot just go over there, say "we bombed you, and here is your freedom" and then leave. More needs to be done to STABILIZE that country, or else another terrorist group will rise to power and we'll face the same problems 10 years from now.

 | BIGBABY (10) 02/26/2003 | Afghanistan never was stable. They were in the middle of a civil war that was going on for years before we arrived. There was constant wars in the Afghan area ever since history became recorded. Afghanistan was always destabilized.

 | Severus (0) 02/25/2003 | When was Afghanistan stable? Oh that's right for the 30 minute at 2:00pm on December 12, 1267 AD

 | abichara (62) 01/07/2002 | I don't believe Afghanistan will be destabilized by our military action; in fact it may be stabilized by rendering the oppressive Taliban regime as null and void. In addition, a working representative government will bring stability to that part of the world, something which they have been lacking for almost 25 years now. I don't like war, but sometimes it is needed to root out undesirable elements from a country. More lives would have been lost had the Taliban remained in power in Afghanistan. Now hopefully, the interim Prime Minister, Mr. Karzai, can bring peace, with the world's help, to this destitute part of the world.

 | TheFreak (3) 12/09/2001 | This poor country has no government, no mercy from the weather, no peace, no money, and no freedom. Afghanistan could be compared to a person standing on one leg made entirely of wood, most of which has been eaten away by termites. And now for today's symbolism lesson: who are the termites? Who made it possible for the taliban to take power and to go this far? Feel free to send me your answers. The US (and I'm sure the guys over in England would be glad to help out) need to help afghanistan, not hurt them. Bin Laden & Co. want us to get angry and wage war on them; why should we give them what they want? We can shock them by helping to buy the country a new wooden leg. Take care, everyone!
