Where I live there are a fair number of adherants of this religion, and they seem as factionalized as any other. Locally, the politics of their homeland seem to blend with their religion, which has led to to some internecine violence. I don't know enough about the practices of the faith to rate it fairly, but I can say their annual holy days are tremendous parties, which works for me.

Sikhism is a lovely religion, like the teachings and stuff However, what I cannot stand is people waving thier Khanda's in the air showng off how "Sikh" they are and putting "Jatt this, Jatt that, I'm a Jatt" everywhere, when they cut thier hair and stuff.even if you don't cut your hair, it becomes more of a fashion status when you do that, and the religion looses it's meaning ;)

From what I understand this religion is a hybrid of Islam and Hinduism. This in itself seems and impossibility to concieve, as every truth in Islam seems to hinge on the concept of the UNITY of god, whereas Hinduism personifies the attributes of God as seperate dieties to a scientific degree. It also seems to promote this separation of the divine to the extent of making possible a systematic of hierarchy of humans castes and their actions. I celebrate Islam for its vibrant and holistic approach to seeking and incorporating the truth. Hinduism for its awesome heritage and elaborate retention of a form of consistency. I would have to study further to understand how Sikhism combines the two.I fear it could simply be a dulling of the two..wait I'm thinking of Jainism..I have no idea what the teaching s of Sikhism are despite having gone to school with a follower of that sect. He seemed bright and humble..and I thought it was cool when I learned he had a long lock of hair under what I thought was just a silly head wrap. From the description it sounds pretty good, especially the denouncing blind rituals. If this is the 5th largest religion then it is a shame I do not know more. O h well I'm not much of a religious seeker these days myself..I sought religion once and found the journey inward to be more fascinating and studded with truths and mysteries. I see religion more as a means of reconciling respect and boundries between people, while offering ways towards divine truth and knowledge. I rate it a 3 for lack of knowledge sounding good but I would have to study the nature of its claims for holiness and gurus.

There is only one God. The bible say's living good don't cut it; You must be born again through the blood of Jesus Christ.

going by the "definition/description" of this belief system, it is difficult for me to say anything bad about it...though I very rarely say anything bad about other's beliefs since I think u must pick that path that "feels right to you"

Any religion where you have to wear a dagger at all times is pretty cool. Generally acknowledged as the best warrior tribe in India; Sikhs nearly halted the British conquest.
Unfortunately, you can't cut your hair, and you also have to wear a turban and a sacred diaper, so just 4 stars for the Sikhs.

All religions founded by certain individuals are their religion and since humans are imperfect and limited, their religion is likewise.

Sikhism is okay for being fairly young. It like any religion which make sense at its core always catches persecution. If you're a Sikh in India you can be sure to get to meals a day. In fact you don't have to be a Sikh to receive these meals. Its strange how Muslim will eat with Sikhs the same day they want to kill them.

The only thing I really know about Sikhism is that it blends Islam and Hiduism on some level, but I did some satellite work for some of this religions followers on a few occasions and they were REALLY frickin' nice people, so I'm gonna throw a four out there at least for my nice customers.

Interesting that they basically tried to combine Islam with Hinduism, but still nonsense.
GenghisTheHun 09/15/2005
Interesting hybrid of Hindu and Islam thought. It appears to be holding its own. This religion has a strong military tradition. The British had a couple of Sikh wars to subjugate this group.
caligula 04/15/2005
Rejection of caste system is a good thing. Not as illogical as xianity. Basically a deist religon without a lot of buerecratic profiteers, which makes it OK. Long hair thing is strange though.
Daccory 12/22/2004
The Sikhs in the UK have successfully forced the abandonment of a play criticising their faith (and written by a Sikh)by violent protest at a theatre in Birmingham. This goes against the laws of our freedom of speech and availability of all subjects to all people. Why are we having to change our traditional freedoms to satisfy a bunch of people with a differnet culture who came here to live? These people should have been arrested and charged. This is the danger of ALL religious agitators (of any faith) who try to squash free speech commenting on that which they do not wish to hear.

Sikh means diciple. Founded in North west India by Nanak c1500AD combining Hindu with Islam (Surfism). Belives in God and rejects the cast system. Belies in Karma and reincarnation. Escape from rebith comes from thinking apon God and repeating his name. practice worship and meditaion (mantra of the true name of God), baptism with water, growing long hair wraping it in a turbin, avoidence of alchohol, tobacco & narcotics, are encoraged to eat meat, observe morality and practice the use of arms. Thay carry a bangel, a comb & a dagger (It is said that if thay take it out thay must kill). Politics: Nationalist. Scriture: Granth.
