Monster's Ball 1

A good Sci-Fi movie. I grow tired of people constantly focusing on the sex scene & forgetting about how badly the main characters treated their children. The sex scene was very sloppy & Hallie looked drugged up in ecstasy which is something I never expected her look like. This woman harbours such tremendous hypocrisy when she states Hollywood is racist when she turns around & protrays some poor needy black woman who is willing to sleep with a racist. My God where is the bottom & I am glad her mom is white.

Was an OK movie, I like movies that don't have to take place in NYC or California. This movie did a fairly good job creating the feel of the rural South. I thought it was funny how they conveniantly got rid of characters just to speed the affair along. First her husband is executed, then lets get rid of his son suicide, then her son gets killed by a hit and run. Movie would have been more realistic had the roles of Heath Ledger and Thornton been reversed, I mean Billy Bob is like 20 years older than Halle Berry's character. But I guess I'm missing the point of the movie, it was basically about 2 lonely people who's lives sucked, that kind of just got thrown together and needed each other, in that aspect the movie did a good job.

Monster's Ball 3

I thought this movie was okay. I most definitely did not see anything that made Halle's performance Oscar-worthy. I strongly believe Halle got the Oscar because of timing and luck. First, Halle, a Cleveland native, did a film playing Dorothy Dandridge, a light-skinned black woman, who's also a Cleveland native, and who was found quite attractive by blacks and whites alike in her time. A black woman who due to her great talent was the first black woman to be nominated for Best Actress, but, of course, did not win. When Halle won the Golden Globe for her performance of Dorothy Dandridge, everyone knew then she was given credibility and had been accepted by mainstream (non-black) America and Hollywood and she was only going to continue going up from there. Second, Halle's star has only been on the rise since she began acting and she, as Dorothy Dandridge had been, is a light-skinned black woman (due to her being bi-racial), who is found very attractive and appealing by the white powers that be in Hollywood. Third, Halle turned out an passable performance at a time when her star had never shone brighter in Hollywood and at a time when Hollywood decided they were finally ready to make history and give the Best Actress Oscar to a black woman. Voila, Halle was it. Anyone who doubts this need only think of the many truly talented black actresses and the countless outstanding performances they have given in film after film. Does anyone really think Halle's performance in Monster's Ball was that good? Was her performance honestly better than the performances of all the black actresses that have come before her? Cicely Tyson, Dorothy Dandridge, Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg (in the Color Purple), Margaret Avery (in the Color Purple), and the many other black actresses out there who have never received the recognition and honor for their talent. Heck, Halle was better in Losing Isaiah. I could see her winning for that first. On another note, I'm sick of people saying she is not black because her mom is white. We all know that in this country if you have one drop of "black blood", you have always been considered black. Halle looks black and has said countless times that she considers herself black and that her mom raised her to think of herself as black knowing America would tell her just as much. If Halle were to go around saying, "I'm bi-racial. I'm not black", many blacks would be up in arms about it. The same way so many blacks flew off the handle when Tiger Woods refused to stick a label on himself. When Tiger refused to say he was black, and instead said "I'm all this…" many blacks didn't like it one bit. They felt he was trying to disown his black heritage. Personally, as a black woman (married to a white man), I think bi-racial and multiracial people should not have to claim one ethnicity over another cause they are not just one or the other, but when they don't they're pounced on and when they do their told "not enough". They cannot win. Should it not be up to them?

Monster's Ball 2

What the HELL was that movie about???? Halle Berry is a wonderful actress. No, she is not great.... I'm sorry... Beautiful lady - yes. Great actress - I don't see it. What the hell was the OSCAR for? I really believe, the committee felt that it was time to give this award to a black actress. The movie "Losing Isiah" was a much better movie. Halle please don't lower yourself by taking off your clothes for every movie. It's not a good thing. Oh on the black thing. YOU ARE NOT BLACK SWEETHEART. You're mother has blond hair.

Tuna and I agree that you should avoid this movie at all cost!!! The dramatic moment was the execution and suicide. However the Halle/Billy Bob plot wasn't exciting. They break up. They kiss. Blah Blah. I also love the writers for killing off the kid so his mother can have more sex with the old man.(sarcasm).

Don't go see it. The local paper gave it an A-. The minus part was right. It's a story about people losing their hatred and bigotry and falling in love masked in a tale of death, more death, and even more death. Yes, Billy Bob Thornton is a great character actor. Halle Berry can act, too, and we get confirmation for anyone that didn't already know, that she has a great body. But, to watch sucicides, to watch electrocutions, and to watch parents ahting their children, and telling them to their faces, BLECHH.
