 | Sierrasstar (4) 06/21/2007 | Oil is not a renewable recource and we should be using renewable recources for our sources for energy. It will never be made again once we are done with the supply of it and it causes polution. And it's too expensive!

 | SchadenfreudianSlip (18) 06/21/2007 | I could understand when the price of oil went up due to irascibly, wascawy Saudis, gettin' a wild hair up their camel...but when it's people from U.S. oil bidnesses doing the hijacking and price-gouging, it's just bass-ackwards.

 | magellan (153) 06/21/2007 | The pluses: it's cheap, has an established infrastrucure supporting it, and efficient.
The minuses: it makes us geo-political slaves to a part of the world that doesn't share our values, and it's wrecking the environment.
Verdict: Hopefully the next president will show some leadership in moving us towards energy 2.0. This one sure hasn't.

 | DeathRattle (1) 02/14/2006 | Here is probably the very reason why a topic like this is even discussed. It appears as if oil will be a rare substance one way or another. Those who have control be it middle eastern countries, U.S. based corporations, or anyone else will the play the market to their own gain, and will make sure potential buyers play to their tune. Unless there's a drastic change where all blockades for those who want to drill in certain areas of the U.S., the United States will have to play games with oil companies here and overseas. It's only a matter of time before everyone from governments to automobile manufacturers will say enough is enough.

 | 37102002 (2) 04/01/2005 | Still relatively cheap and plentiful, but using it to fuel humanities engines does severe damage to the enviroment. We will need something else by 2100, both because oil will be in short supply and because our environment wont be able to take any more assault.

 | alty6905 (1) 09/08/2003 | Why shouldn't we use it. Are we saving it for something else. Even if it is poluting, Earth is at a point of no return where no matter how ecofriendly we are, too much damage has already been done.

 | hendo (0) 08/22/2003 | It's time to stop letting this resource dictate our foreign policy. Even if we drill in Alaska and find enough oil to last for centuries (more likely it will last only for a few years), our allies like Japan, South Korea and Australia are almost 100% dependent on Middle-Eastern oil. Therefore, we will still have to prop up the Saudi Arabian kingdom or our allies go dry. Alternative fuel is the only long-term answer.

 | twinmom101 (31) 05/02/2003 | Oh yeah, it's really great! Why don't we ask some of the millions around the world who have lost loved ones due to fighting over this dirty, polluting sludge. I'm not even going to get into what environmental impacts it's had. Pretty easy to say it's great when you're not the animal dying from an oil spill (but hey, those are just stupid animals, right? Collateral damage just like Iraqi civillians). Change is hard, which is why some people wrongly claim this to be the best source. But change is what we have to do if we want to prevent the world from looking like swiss cheese in a desperate attempt to squeeze every last drop of this limited resource.

 | Joe23665 (0) 04/30/2003 | An excuse to drill in Alaska. Why don't we just start bathing in it, it is so wonderful. "Alternative" means another choice. Hello!

 | shirley marshall (0) 04/11/2003 | My consenses is that oil is not as scarce as we are led to believe and the answer to the problem is to allow car manufactures to produce engines that take less gas. I believe that political pressure from oil companies are keeping these technology advances from being utilized.

 | aryglesock (0) 03/22/2003 | How the hell can you say good things about oil? It's like liquid evil. It's pretty much spawned all of our problems, from Japan bombing Pearl Harbor to Osama Bin Laden.
Not only is it bad for world relations, it costs a lot and it screws up the environment.
And as it courses though the veins of our "president" it might make us lose our Alaskan wildlife reserves and is causing us to go to war with Iraq.

 | BIGBABY (10) 02/26/2003 | I know that this really shouldn't be on the list, but oil is great. I agree with Anmalone, who can prove that oil is running out? Oil does everything its supposed to. There would be less foreign wars if we would just drill our own in Alaska.

 | anmalone (5) 02/25/2003 | Can anyone prove that we are really running out of oil? Sure if you don't drill in the frozen waste land of ANWR or Malibu or anywhere in the continental US you can prove it but otherwise nope.

 | gmanod (3) 02/02/2003 | When you think of Alternative fuels, what comes to mind? To what are you seeking an alternative? Your seeking an alternative to oil. Now it wouldn't suprise me if some believe that we should look to oil as an alternative for oil, but alas, we may not get very far. This shouldn't be on this list.

 | abichara (60) 01/23/2003 | Oil is not an alternative fuel per se, so maybe this shouldn't be on this list. Alternative fuels are products like hydrogen cells and the such. People who advocate alternate fuels want to move away from oil!!! There are some environmentalists who would jump off a cliff at the sight of oil being considered an alternate fuel. Oil is not necessarily a bad fuel though if it is refined properly. It has been a major pollutant throughout the world, but right now, it is the only fuel that can be used to power our society. Alternate fuels should be developed as a whole because oil is an exhaustible resource and it does raise CO2 levels in the atmosphere no matter how much you can spin the argument. Alternative fuels are currently being developed, and once they can be cheaply and practically produced, then they should be introduced into the market.
