To address the point made about being able to go to Sally's beauty supply and buy the generic product of Nioxin, well let me inform you that there is a reason why Nioxin isn't sold at Sally's just like American Crew products, Paul Mitchell products and so on and so forth...because they are PROFESSIONAL HAIR CARE PRODUCTS...sold only to SALONS and PROFESSIONAL HAIRSTYLIST. I have never used the generic version of Nioxin but I have used Nioxin myself. I loved the way it made my hair and scalp feel, plus it did feel thicker. As for new hair growing in, I didn't notice it but I also had long hair. It is easier to see "new growth" in hair as it is shorter. Now that I am working at a salon that sells Nioxin, I have done A LOT of research about this stuff, so I can really understand what I am selling to my clients. To my understandings Nioxin is designed to cleanse the scalp and hair of all impurities including DHT which is a dihydrotestosterone (I hope I spelled that right) which is stored in oil that builds up on the scalp and clogs your hairs pores. That is why some people may experience hair loss the first few weeks of using Nioxin, because the Nioxin is cleansing the pores that may hold already dead hair, which once cleansed can open the pores and allow for new hairs to grow back if the follical isnt already damaged. That is why it wont work or "cure" baldness for everyone, it just depends on how damaged and how noticable the thinning in the hair was prior to starting the treatment. But I have seen cases in which new hair has began to grow in...it starts as really fine baby like hair then as it grows becomes stronger and healthier. I believe it works but just not for EVERYONE who experiences hair loss. You will never know until you give it a try. And if anything, your hair and scalp will feel healthier and be much stronger. Just keep in mind that you need to purchase your products through your hairstylist or at a professional hair supplier ( meaning ONLY licensed hairstylist can purchase products at that store) to insure that it isn't past it's shelf life or experation dates and also to insure that it wasn't stolen or tampured with!!!! OHHHH and back to the generic products....in my experience with generic products, they might be cheaper at Sally's or wherever but you use more because they tend to be "watered down" and less concentrated...so in the end you usually spend the same as buying the professional products!!! So why wouldn't you just buy the REAL Nioxin?!?!Thanks for your time!!

awful, I think there are alot of manufacturer/ makers of nioxin that put these false reviews on here. I mean my hair falls out a bit when I shower from my meds, and I mean maybe four strands., at the most.. THE FIRST TIME I USED NIOXIN, AT LEAST 50 STRANDS CAME OUT.. I PANICED AND RESHAMPOOED MY HAIR WITH MY SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER! i JUST Hope this is NOT long lasting, now everytime i pull my hair more strands then usual are coming out!
Lzack 05/28/2009
Female, 52,I tried the shampoo and conditioner which work ok.I like the scalp treament, no. 2 or 3, use once a day, at night usually. The foam scalp treatment is awful!!! don't buy it. It is like putting glue on your hair. It took me 10 minutes to slowly brush out each strand on top of my head. I returned it to store for money back. It is not usable. Biggest problem with Nioxin is that is is Outrageously Expensive!! There must be a comparable product that costs less. Does anyone know what it is?

I believe this product does stop hair from falling out . But I dont think it makes any new hair grow. I used it for two years and my hair stayed the same which I was great full for . then for some foolish reason I stopped using it and with in a few month i noticed my hair starting to thin out a little more . I got nioxin again and it stopped . I do see some temp redness when using the scalp treatment but i dont know how people could get swelling or have redness lasting for days . Other than pouring the whole bottle on your head or sticking you head in a nuclear reactor I cant see that happening . Too much of anything going to give you some kind of irritation . If you use the scalp treatment or folical booster dont glob it on your head in a panic to make your hair stop falling out its not going to make it work any better all your going to get is red burning marks . Unfortunaly the people who cant read instructions will experiance that .

I've been noticing my hair slowly thinning since I was about 16... I'm now 24 and it's getting pretty noticeable. Someone at the place where I get my hair cut recommended Nioxin to me, so I decided to look into it. After some research, I decided to get the 1L bottles of the System 2 Cleanser and Conditioner from Amazon and give it a try.I started using it about 3 and a half weeks ago, and I haven't missed a day yet. As others have commented, I first noticed that neither the cleanser or conditioner smell really nice, but I haven't noticed that they leave my hair smelling bad, and my girlfriend actually commented that she likes the smell once it dries. The cleanser is just like any other shampoo... it lathers well and washes out pretty easy. The conditioner is also pretty run-of-the-mill except one thing -- it really stings and makes your head feel very cold. I guess that's a sign that it's working... or at least it is doing something. At first it was kind of painful, but after about a week I guess my scalp got used to it and now it's kind of refreshing. At the same time as I started this, I also started taking a vitamin every day (Men's One-a-day), which is also making me feel better. I'm mentioning it because it might have also had something to do with my results. So far I haven't noticed any dramatic results. It doesn't appear that my hair is falling out anymore, but I never really noticed it falling out before, only that it was slowly disappearing from my head. My hair does appear slightly thicker, and my hair definitely looks better than it did before... but I was using cheap shampoo and no conditioner before, so I'd expect that too. I haven't noticed any regrowth yet, but that doesn't surprise me... I understand you don't usually notice regrowth for several months, if you do at all.So I guess I'd say at this point that I would recommend Nioxin, but definitely don't expect huge noticeable results overnight. I'll try and remember to report back later if I start noticing any other big differences.

I have been using nioxin for 3 yrs. My hair stopped falling out 1 week after my first use...three yrs later and my hair looks great!!! I would recomend the starter kid to see if one has a bad reaction to this product.
aisel 02/22/2009
Really, I must admit, one of my best friends recommended Nioxin. My hair started to slowly go when I was just 16 and by the time I was 30, I had probably lost about a 3rd. I usedd Nioxin (shampoo and the #2??) anyway, those are the only products from them I have ever used. At the time, I thought I saw a change (new hairs growing) but was in the middle of a divorce and stopped. Years later, which was a few months ago, I asked her to get it for me again. Three months into it, I can't beleive the difference... I'm seeing lots of new hair growing and here I am writing in this website. It really seems to work so far. I plan to keep using both products. I don't know how much new hair it will keep growing, but it seems to work. I may consider buying Minoxidil to aid it even more. Thanks for listening and I sure recommend trying it.

My mother became extremely ill a few years ago, when she was in her fifties, was hospitalized, and when she came home, her hair began coming out, eventually in clumps. No real reason or cause was ever found. She was terribly depressed, upset, thought she would have to begin wearing a wig. She spoke to a local hairstylist who was familiar w/the Nioxin five step system, and while not hopeful considering the amount of hairloss already suffered, suggested Mom try it. IT WORKED-IMMEDIATELY! Over the course of a weekend, the hair stopped coming out, and over the course of several weeks, all grew back. She's had no problem since, and as she worked for a doctor, told numerous people over the intervening years. It has been a miracle for many.
walkergal 01/02/2009
Warning!! I tried one of their starter kits (# 9) with no problem, but when I started using # 3 shampoo I got the red, blotchy, swollen symptoms on my face (my eyes were almost swollen shut), red, itchy blotches all over my body, and my entire scalp was burned. My dermatologist is very conservative with treatments, and very rarely writes RXs for steroids, but seeing how bad I was she prescribed Prednisone pills (steroid), steroid ointment for my body, and steroid treatment for my scalp. It's been several months getting back to normal. So beware, if you don't react to one of the products, you CAN react allergically to another!
kallen551 12/24/2008
NIOXIN + PROPECIA + luke warm / cool water (think of your hair as a plant, put enough hot water and you will kill it) = HAIR!
james0070 12/03/2008
This stuff is great, I've been using the #2, after one week my hair quit falling out, i used to have to clean the hair out of the drain every other shower, now, I haven't had to do it in 3 weeks! This stuff is genuine, but may not work for all people, it's worth giving it a try though.
annonamee 11/30/2008
WARNING!! This stuff can be deadly. I used it for 5 days and broke out with the same red, blotchy burning, and swollen symptoms on my face that appear to be a common occurrence in some people. I immediately stopped using the product and have since been prescribed a number of prescription cremes as well as prednisone pills to help alleviate the painful reactions your skin can face (no pun intended). I'm still in pain after two weeks of treatment for the allergic related symptoms from Nioxon! Thought I would help save someone from this hell. Be safe people.

I am a 24y.o. female and have been using the complete level 2 Nioxin system for 4 months now and the results have been fantastic. As with many others, over the first 2 months my hair loss seemed to actually increase(!) but I soon began to notice new baby hairs growing. I have persevered with it, and if nothing else, my hair is noticeably stronger and healthier now. The actual hair-loss itself has reduced dramatically; whilst the regrowth is still coming through. It does take time and does not claim to be a quick-fix. Instead, it is a long-term 'solution' to thinning/balding hair. The foam is my least favourite part of the system as it doesn't smell as nice as the cleanser or scalp therapy. It also makes my hair feel sticky so I use it before bed, and skip it when I wash my hair with the cleanser and scalp therapy in the morning.
wendi1 11/10/2008
I tried this only once. The shampoo and conditioner did make my scalp feel great. That all ended when I used the leave in treatment. Any skin it touched became red, burning, and swollen. It looked like a severe scalding accident. The Hair Cuttery was kind enough to refund my money. Incase someone else tries it and gets a similar reaction, stop using immediatly.

I began taking Toprol, a medication for high blood pressure (47 year old female). Not long after I noticed significant hair loss. My hairdresser recommended the Nioxin line (I use #7). It took 3-4 weeks, but for the first time in months, I had very little hair loss while blow drying my hair this morning, and have lots of new baby hairs coming back in. I was discouraged at first as the product didn't seem to be working, but I am sure now that it is. Do think about whether any medications you are taking could be aggravating your hair loss. Toprol CAN cause hair loss, it is listed as one of the side effects. Good luck to all, losing hair is very upsetting!
Tiannate 10/05/2008
Use nioxin Products + take good multivitamin that has good amount of biotin and zinc. hope that works for you.. it works for me. just have to take it faithfully.

I think nioxin might be working im not a 100% sure, but the way it makes my scalp feel is fantastic.I also recomend which I use is a massager.I have a back massager and I have heard you should massage your scalp to help with blood flow.So I use my back massager on my scalp 10mins every night before bed after I put the foam on from nioxin on and I really think with the nioxin system followed by a hearty massage to the scalp might be working.
JSKnorr06 09/15/2008
If anyone is considering using Nioxin, do it! And give it a chance to work. It may take 3-6 months for it to work although some people see results in 2 weeks. You might notice more hairloss for a little while but that is because it is cleansing the blocked follicles that are making your hair fall out in the first place. Those hairs that you lost are basically just held in by excessive build up. that is why you will lose hair before it gets better. Deffinatly give it a chance!
DoreeLynn 09/13/2008
I've been taking medication for three years now and my hair is thinning. My hair stylist suggested I start using Nioxin and for the last 12 weeks now, I have been a faithful user of the Cleanser and Scalp treatment. Also used the follicle booster for 6 weeks. Works WONDERFULLY! My hair is thicker, shiny, and I am noticing less hairs in the sink in the morning after styling.

Hi all, I wanted to drop in and let you know that I have been using Nioxin System 2 cleanser for about two months. That is the only Nioxin product that I use, the system 2 cleanser only. I also use Rogaine foam, for two months, twice a day as directed. It has only been two months but I must say that I have some fine, thin hairs growing where my bald spot was before. My hair stylist is amazed. One reviewer stated that a little goes a long way, she is correct. When I first started using Nioxin and Rogaine I did notice an increase in the shedding of my hair, probably within the first two weeks, since that time my hair has thickened, feels cleaner, and is starting to grow back. I will give another update to you in two more months. Good luck and stick with your regimen what ever it is. Being persistent pays off.

All I can tell you is my dad, and my younger brother have experienced hair loss, I seem to have gotten away with it, I have been using nioxin for a decade. For those of you that initially experience increased hair loss, this is beacause the shampoo dissolves pore clogging sebum - many times it is only this pore clogging sebum that is holding in what is essentially a dead hair. One the pore is clear new hair may grow through. I notice when using the scalp therapy that i have more new hair bristles coming through my scalp. Using it for a short time, even less than 6 months, wont do much for you.
krystalgr8 05/17/2008
I have used Nioxin for 8 weeks and my hair is falling out just as much as before!
SUPERMOMMA 04/30/2008
I am a new mom for the third time. Every child that i have had my hair loss begins soon after. I purchased the entire system for $90.00! Sad to say 5 months later i have not had any thickening or hair growth. WISH I HADN'T OF BOUGHT IT:(
northriverdesi gns 04/29/2008
I used Nioxin cleanser and scalp treatment 3 for about three months. I stopped using it because my hair was thinner than ever. I also don't like the quats in it and I absolutely hated the finishing rinses (I tried 2 different kinds, #3 and #6). It's also way overpriced.

I again was skeptical about this product, but to my amazement my hair and scalp feel soooo much better and it feels really clean, i have not felt it like this for years. My hair appears to feel heavier and actually has a shine and thats only after one use, i applied the gel before drying and that works great aswel. For once in my life i have not wasted my money on another scam, i have suffered for 20years with thinning hair but i can honestly say it makes a real difference to how your hair feels. I am a 40yr old female so i want to make it clear that its great for our hair too. I have not used the scalp theray yet but am going to order some today and fingers crossed get even better results. the product has no harmful products so what have you got to lose as i do not think it is really that expensive in comparison to others. I am one happy customer and am willing to publically say this product is great! go for it! pam
garlandgal 04/09/2008
I'm a brand new user of Nioxin and purchased System 1. I used it for the first time last night and wanted to say that my scalp has NEVER felt so clean and refreshed! I love the mentholated scent and the shampoo lathers beautifully. A little goes a long way and I have waist-length hair. Didn't experience any redness or irritation as some have commented. The leave-in scalp treatment is formulated as a clear liquid and leaves no residue behind. Hopefully, after continued use, I'll enjoy the restoration or appearance of new growth!

I am a 39 year old male and used Nioxin cleanser 1,scalp therapy 1, my hair was thinning on top and I wanted to preserve it before it got worse. After 4 weeks I was get my hair cut and mentioned to my stylist that I had been using Nioxin. She said "I am glad you told me that because I noticed you are re-growing hair" she combed back my hair near the edge of my scalp and I could see all the tiny hairs spouting! Now Nioxin does not even claim to re-grow hair. It just states things like 9 out of 10 PERCEIVE a thickening effect and even has a disclaimer. I was very skeptical and was really only tried it because while at a local mall I saw a Beauty Shop/Salon that offers high end hair care products. Even though the two items were $40.00 I thought what the heck and bought them. The second time I went back to my hair stylist she showed me the "new growth" again and it was twice as long but still shorter than my original hair. I went back to the local mall and they had a half off sale so I bought two bottles of Nioxin cleanser ,scalp therapy. I am going to try the Follicle booster next for more thickness. I do notice a huge difference and my hair is fuller on top. I always used head and shoulders dry scalp (winter) and panteen prov prior to my Nioxin discovery.

Can anyone advise me of any Nioxin products that I can use to stop my scalp from burning in the sun as this can be very painfull
samma 02/28/2008
I'm a cosmetologist and sell nioxin, it isn't really made to re-grow hair, only to stop hair loss. I do use the recharging complex (vitamins) and they do help my hair feel healthy and grow a little faster. And a lot of clients notice a difference but it takes about 6 months for to start working but you have to use the whole system; shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment.
Claymaker 02/11/2008
Update after 7 months of using Nioxin: It works. My hair looks thicker and my balding spot is a bit fuller. It is not 'majic' and the results are not dramatic but there is some new hair. Wish I had started using it 10 years ago.
shelby10 02/06/2008
Their products are a bit expensive, but worth it. I have been using Nioxin on and off for several years, due to the fluxuation in my personal finances. Right now I am using both the cleanser, scalp therapy, and the folical booster. I have been ON the products for about two and a half months now and I am seeing very little hair in the tub and on my comb. Here is a tip. Nioxin use to encourage you to massage the scalp when using the scalp therapy. It does not say to do that now. But I still do. I also massage my scalp when using the folical booster, every day. This encourages the blood to flow. I also take a good multi vitamen that has 2000 mcg's of biotin and 400 mcg's of folic acid. I exercise daily and get a lot of sleep, and I try to eat well. I think that the key to keeping your hair and scalp healthy is in how well you treat the problem over all. My attitude is that I want to keep what hair I have left for as long as I can. Also, sleeping with a satin pillow case helps too. It prevents your hair from breaking off while you toss and turn at night--if this too is a problem for you. My nine year old told my the other day that she thought that my hair was getting longer. I noticed it too, and I can tell that it is ticker. The only downside is that you can not buy the products through the NIOXIN website. And it always is under some kind of construction. The products are expensive, and I would expect the company to stay on top of this.

Thymuskin is a natural, safe and effetive hair growth product.
akajames 01/15/2008
I will start off by saying that I know of 2 products that are able to regrow hair: One's a German made product and the other is a Chinese one. Fabao 101 Series, created by Dr Zhangguang, and the other is Thymuskin. They are both excellent products and you will never need to apply them forever to maintain your hair. I noticed that I was getting better (faster?) results when I stacked the two products together. However, they don't fully work against hair loss induced by Minoxidil. 11 years ago at the age of 17 I began to lose my hair but stopped it with Nioxin. I gradually started growing my hair back with the discovery of the 2 products I mention earlier up until a year and a half ago. Which is when I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life; I tried using a product called Scalpmed which contains 5% Minoxidil. I decided not to use it after a month and about a month and a half later my hair, all over my scalp except the back and sides, started falling out. It started falling out so fast, I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what was happening...actually, you can read the full story at this link http://www.tcmhospital.com/products/hairregrowth/te stimony.html I wrote an email explaining my situation asking for advice and they posted it on their testimony page. So, I now realize minoxidil causes hair loss, but what kind? And it's not ordinary hair loss either. At the rate my hair began to fall out I would have been completely bald 6 months after I discontinued using it but have only been able to reduce the shedding with those formulas. I am now beginning to feel I am only prolonging the inevitable. I just started using Nioxin and it seems to be slowing it down even more. In time I will know. So, If you have used Minoxidil, I don't know if these products will work. Well, here is where you can get them. http://www.tcmhospital.com/products/hairregrowth/se lect101.html http://www.thymusking.com/ For the Chinese product, 101 Follicle-nourishing tonic is the strongest, 101G & 101 Original are great too. For Thymuskin, the Hair Gel is the strongest but works best with the shampoo A common mistake people make is not using enough and not applying it right. Treat it as if you are rubbing bengay into your sore muscles. It needs to penetrate the skin for it to work. Does anyone now if I were to use Topical Flutamide, will I lose any hair if I stopped using it? How about Spiro?

I straighten my hair everyday and am always changing my hair colour, for at one point because of all the colouring over colour, my hair began to get very damaged and i started to loss hair loads of hair while taking a shower. So i talked to my hair dresser and she recommended a Nioxin Shampoo and Revitalizer (conditioner), it was quite a bit more expensive then the Matrix Biolage stuff i was usually, but I thought i would give it a try, the first time i used it i was amazed at how soft my hair had become it even straighteneed out the little frizzy tips of my hair, but i was still loosing hair. After about a month I stilled didnt notice much of a difference other than my looked and felt more healthy, but in the next month or so, I couldnt believe the difference it made, my hair was not only soft and healthy, but I was hardly loosing any hair at all, my hair dresser was even impressed, my hair did not break anymore. Also I get the tips of my hair cut off about every 4 - 6 weeks, just to keep my hair healthy, so you might want to ook into doing that while using the shampoo. The only downfall I found about the shampoo was that once you stop using you hair becomes brittle and very unhealthy looking and feeling, so lets just hope they dont go out of business. But I mean come on the actresses and actors use it on their hair and they colour, perm, or chemically straighten their hair every single day pretty much, so if it's good enough for them then it should be good enough for us. Anyways I think that NIOXIN may be the best thing for hair ever put on this planet.

i feel i lost more hair using Nioxin than before. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone. Has anyone heard of Provillus? If you have tried it please let me know if it works.
volleybird 12/22/2007
I've noticed considerable thinning in my hair due to a certain medication. So far, I can't say the smell of Nioxin is very appealing. My hair feels really dry after putting on that foaming stuff at the end. I'm wondering if you all let your hair air dry? Can you use any other styling products? I don't know if I'm going to be able to stand using this for a month or more! I haven't felt any tingling of the scalp either like others say they experience.
blahblooh 12/20/2007
i've been using nioxin for almost 2 yr. like others said, the product (cleanser & therapy) doesn't seem to grow hair, but rather prevent hair loss by strengthening hair roots or something (you can tell why i can't sell this product!). i've recommended to a colleague and he felt the difference within only 2 wks. the only drawback is it can get cold in the shower because of substance nioxin uses (kinda menthol).
dferrell 12/16/2007
I have noticed a great difference while using minoxidil along with Nioxin. Thicker hair and more hair. I have the same hair I did in high school. I started as soon as I noticed thinning. The sooner the better. I am a 27 year old male.
jns84 11/19/2007
I am a female and currently using Minoxidil 5% (for men). Would anybody know if I combine the two (minoxidil and nioxin) would speed up the reaction or will have any negative effects?
bread72 11/14/2007
I tried Nioxin today for the first time. I have very thin hair and have experienced excessive hair loss for the past few month due to stress. I bought Nioxin 1 (I should have bought either 2 or 3) and when I tried the product, I lost about 40 hairs while combing my hair, which is abnormal to me. I am very concerned that it will make my hair loss worse if I continue.Any advice? Thanks,J

Nioxin is an awful product use the generic brand of "propecia" called "proscar". Originally used as a prostate drug some patients started regrowing hair on "THE TOP" of their head. I stopped using Nioxin because my hair has never fallen out faster than when I used it.
Miamiheat 10/28/2007
I have been using Nioxin products (Cleanser, Conditioner, Hair Spray, and the multi-vitamin: the recharging complex)for almost a year now. I think Nioxin has somewhat slowed the thinning process of my hair but I have not seen any "miracle growth" yet. I spend a lot of money on these products (they are not cheap!) and I just wonder sometimes whether it would have been cheaper to just let it go (meaning not to use any of this Nioxin stuff) and then simply have a hair transplant when I go totally bold. If you think about it, in the event keep buying these products for a little over than 10 years, I might end up spending more money that the cost of a transplant! What do you think? Any comments? Ray-

I agree with Claymaker, most of these " reviews " are just too good to be true. Nioxin could be a good product but the " reviews " do thier own product a disservice. By reading these reviews, they would have you belive that Nioxin is the " Holy Grail " of hair products which is a claim that the most nieve or gullible consumer would most likley reject as the truth.
jeffrey71913 10/21/2007
Nioxin makes good products, however, it is no magic bullet. Nioxin should augment a good hairloss prevention program that consists of Propecia and Rogaine. Nioxin products also contain ingredients that are strongly suspected to prevent, or, at least slow down hairloss, such as superoxide dismutase. If you don't mind the rather high price then I would say that it's worth it. Personally, I do like and use Nioxin products. My program consists of: Avodart, Rogaine and Nioxin. All of these products have been of great help.

Why does 95 % of all these reviews sound like a commercial for Nioxin ? Could they all 95 % of these people be related or employeed by Nioxin...Naaaaaaaa

I have used this product for over 4 years and my hair is fuller than when I started period. I wish I would have started using it earlier because I have no doubt in my mind that I would even have more how now than I do. Thank god I ran into www.hair-product-professional.com or I would defintely be bald by now... lol Use it or lose it!
mimi4 09/23/2007
I have been using Nioxin for 5 years. It works and I won't use anything else.
Billfer 08/29/2007
-I love this product- Its a super high quality shampoo, therapy and conditioner. It prevents hair from falling out. That coupled with even modest hair growth = more hair. I used to use regular shampoo like "Pert" or "Clairol" or whatever. Then wonder why may hair looked like crap. I color my hair too. Have for years. After using Nioxin my hair is as lusterous and thick as it was in high school. This is amazing stuff really. I windsurf lots too. I use #8 and it protects my color and reduces fading from salt water and sunlight. It makes your hair managable and healthy even if you dye it and swim alot. It makes sense, taking care of your hair is like taking care of your body right? If you buy Nioxin and think its going to grow hair on bald scalp save your dough. Its for folks that have "noticably thinning hair".
