Stricktly by-the-numbers block buster movie making. It was well made and lively, and the cast were very attractively decked out. But none of it was memorable or original, just capably presented. I was impressed that they didn't drop in dubbed singing by better singers, and thought Richard Gere's Rudy Vallee-ish warbling around with his extremely limited voice was the best part of the film. And of Course John C. Reily never disappoints.

Honestly one of my favorite movies. The songs are very well written and the acting is pretty good. Very few times in life does one come upon a movie they don't get tired of. For me, this is one of them.

I love musicals but I simply didn't enjoy this one at all. A big disappointment.

Very undeserving of all the acclaim.

I just saw Chicago this weekend with my parents, and it was excellent. Murder, sly lawyers, sex scandals, and the stage show dances used for Roxie Hart's imaganation made it a great movie.

My wife and I thought the movie was so bad and so boring, we walked out and got our money back. And then what happens? It wins big at the Acadamy Awards! We couldn't get over it. Maybe we were crazy, I don't know, but I stand by my original opinion. Maybe I'll rent it and give it another try.

I think a lot of people expected this movie to fail, but damn I don't care I loved it. I thought the court scenes might have been a tad bit overdramatic, but the chemistry between Renee and Catherine was amazing to me. The majority of the dance sequences were fantastic and who knew Catherine and Renee could dance? Great job by Anne Reinking, who played Roxie on stage, with the outstanding choreography.

There must have been some sort of mass hysteria in Hollywood when the powers that be annointed this dog as a great movie. It isn't even good. Thank God I saw it on video and not in a theater or I would have walked out. A crashing bore.

BEST MOVIE EVER!

i believe no one in the actin business could have done the roles of velma kelly and roxy hart better then renee and catherine..no wonder the got oscars for the roles..thats called talent!

I enjoyed this movie mainly cause the music is so great. Catherine Zeta-Jones was great and it shows that she has done singing before. (She had a hit or two in her counrty years ago). Renee Zelwegger on the other hand ruined the movie for me. I don't think she was talented enough and I saw enough of her bones. Queen Latifah was perfect though. Its a good movie.

Fabulously clever production. Very entertaining. Katherine, Renee, Richard, and Queen L. all wonderful. Another comment compared Queen L to Della Reese. Hey I love 'em both. Della has NEVER done anything badly...I love her! She is such a talented lady. I love her in the You just shot off my pinkey toe... scenes...what a hoot. Della did angels and prostitutes equally as well.

Okay I must change my rating here. When I first saw the movie, I wasn't quite sure whether to like it or be disturbed by it's cynicism and lack of resolve for any of the characters problems. But upon seeing it run again on cable, I gotta admit, man, it sure is fun to watch.
LadyShark4534 02/16/2004
Oh my god. This piece of crud was the most overhyped and overated thing I ever seen. Renee Zellwegger needs to leave the singing business. The music score was terrible. Catherine Zeta Jones can not dance or sing at all. She needs to stick to speaking roles. As for Queen Latifah, She was well in her role, but she's the only good thing that happened to this movie. Seriously, none of the characters are likable. Roxie Heart is as pretty as a donkey's vas deferens and as talented at singing as a screeching bat.
phlip-tout 01/01/2004
Loved it! Catherine Zeta-Jones was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
fd10801 11/21/2003
I confess I read the other ratings to see where I was going to go with this. Considering Renee, Catherine, and Richard were all over televison saying that they really had never sung or danced before, they did a helluva job. Queen Latifah was cool, too -- certainly better than Della Reese in Harlem Nights. I was surprised that the story was as good as it was, considering it was a musical. The little Hitchcockian twist at the end was a hoot!

I tend to get annoyed by musicals - but I really liked Chicago. ALL of the characters are twisted and conniving.... and interesting. The songs are dark and sarcastic - and unlike most musicals - actually seem like a logical extension of the character's mindset. From Richard Gere's money hungry lawyer character, "he does it for the love," to Catherine-Zeta Jones' "act of desperation" when she feels her star falling, to Queen Latifah's "mama will take care of you," each of the musical bits is brilliant. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this movie. Those who have held off seeing it because they expect the campiness of moulin rouge or sound of music should really give chicago a shot - it's a weird, fun flick.

This movie was bawdy, creative, energetic, satirical fun. It is NOT to show people that if you kill someone that you can get away with murder. Hello it's satire and very clever satire on society. It shows how self-centered and self-absorbed we can become and how we can manipulate the media and how the media can manipulate the public. The music was excellent high energy jazz. The dancing was great, even for the actors who are not known for dancing such as Richard Gere. The acting and singing were superb(who knew Richard Gere could sing) Queen Latifah practically steals the show. The best performance is John C Reilly as Amos Hart because the audience can identify and sympathize with him. The best musical number is "Mr Cylophane Man" by Reilly because it is very personal and he radiates a sense of pahtos. If you enjoy musicals, a movie with a clever commentary on society, humor, and good acting then I would recommend this film. However if you do not like musicals or you are not a fan of Richard Gere, Rene Zellweger or Catherine Zeta-Jones or you might think this movie is too bawdy and sends the wrong message then I would not recommend this movie.

Amazing acting, dancing, and vocals. Most of us never knew that the stars of the movie could sing and dance like that! Truly fast paced and fun! I really feel bad for Amos, though. Well, as Billy Flynn said "that's Chicago!" Queen Latifa really stole the show! Richard Gere rocked.

The songs were great but it didn't quite deserve Best Picture and all those other awards.

What a lovely message to send to kids. Kill people and get famous. Oh, How wonderful! Yes, Little Susie! Yes, Little Vinny! Yes, Little Jamal! Let's all go out and have sex with people for fame, Then shoot them! What a wonderful message! BTW, I'm being sarcastic.

F*CK MUSICALS!
Diggity911 06/08/2003
people think that because they take a cow ( Renee Z) and stuff her in a dress and teach her to dance, that they have an instant hit, way overated
Molfan 05/24/2003
Really a 4.5. Our family went today. I really enjoyed this movie. It was well done imaginative, and well acted. I like musicals anyway and it was nice to see one on the big screen. All the actors did a good job with their roles. and considering some had never danced before, did a fine job with the dance numbers. A found this movie to be a nice treat.

A spectaculat movie!!!! Renee zelwegger's performance was marginal, but Catherine Zeta-Jones-WOW!!!!!! i suggest you see the movie, it won something like 7 oscars, was nominated for 13.very good

With me working at my local cinema, i must say that this film has been the most enjoyable one to view. I first thought that this, as a musical, would be dry and only apealing to the fans who had seen the west-end verison, but i was proved wrong as the whole film was extreamly entertaining! The plot wasnt outstanding but the singing and acting abilties of the performers was brilliant. The bright and up-beat songs kept the whole audience in awe and the costumes were just perfect. I personaly love this movie...its definatly one to sing along to! It isnt for the younger audience but for teen-agers and above its a great film to watch and is a much wanted release from the serious and dominating movies this year.

This movie was ok. It's one of those movies that once I have seen it, that's it, I will not watch it again.

This was a good musical. It really deserves Best Picture. The songs were well done and the acting was good too. I am glad that i saw this in theaters. if you have not seen it yet, see it now!

tscottyd 03/24/2003
I have to confess that I really enjoyed this movie. I found it both engaging and entertaining. I really felt the "juke-joint" feel in the movie, I could almost smell the smoke in that dingy little jazz hall.

AWESOME!!!!!

I'm not really the type to like musicals, but I really enjoyed this movie and thought it was one of the best I'd seen in a long time. There was a lot more singing and dancing in the movie than I expected, but it surprisingly wasn't a bad thing. It always kept me entertained and I thought the costumes and settings were great visuals.
sktmps 03/22/2003
Overrated met the judge not pleasant shot in Toronto Twisted so many characters to fit in the movie from the stage musical BF must be turning over in his grave otherwise who knew that RG RZ & CZJ can do the 3 nice to see LL & JCR again! Prefer Moulin Rouge
QueenElessar 03/14/2003
This film was a visual splendour..excellent set-design, make-up and costumes. The dancing and the choreography were really well done. Most of the acting was very good, but I did have problems with Richard Gere. He played his part without any problem but during the musical numbers, I just didn't buy him. His gestures seemed forced and out of place and it distracted me. I thought Catherine Zeta Jones was fabulous as Velma, she had that perfect vampy, bithcy thing going. The two standout numbers in the film for me were the Cell Block Tango, and Mama's good to you (or something like that. Queen Latifah was so perfect in that number, she just blew me away. She owned that stage and really surprised me with her acting ability and the power of her voice. One problem that I had with the film was the at times the musical numbers seemed disjointed from the plot. They were always in different settings, and I think they could have been interwoven more effectively
raye 02/18/2003
as an entertainment movie is was good. The music was sensational...acting was good...and i walked away feeling good. BUT !!!! it did not make me think...it did not deal with any issues......nor did it give me any insight into anything......it was just entertaining ...a feel good movie......
Theatre_Bug_05 02/17/2003
Best movie I have seen in awhile.
consumergal 01/22/2003
This movie is enjoyable, but not as great as I was expecting from all the publicity. The performances by Queen Latifah, Zeta-Jones and Gere are wonderful, but I was not sold by Zellweger in her role. Some of the songs (the women in the prison) were fantastic - and Zeta-Jones really can sing. Also, if you are a fan of more traditional musicals (like West Side Story, the King and I, etc.), this might not be your cup of tea.
callmetootie 01/17/2003
This movie is everything...and all that jazz! Renee Zellweger is cute, Catherine Zeta-Jones is hot hot hot, Richard Gere is handsome, John C Reily is creepy, and Queen Latifah brings down the house!
