Japanese are highly imaginative when it comes to horror movies, and to the North Americans, this creativity actually works against them. Their horror flicks tend to be perceived as too wild of an idea to be sensible. The Ring is one of those movies that when you think about what it is about, nothing should be remotely scary, but you just can't help to feel the chill when you watch it and have a nightmare that very night you go to sleep. I heard the Japanese version of this movie was way scarier, and hense I have made a point not to purchase it.

Just because the movie in shot in a gray color scale doesnt make it brilliant. Mystic River was shot in a blue color scale but that doesn't make it a brilliant movie, it still was as dry and boring as a documentary and it was a murder mystery film. The Ring has a horrible and sketchy plot and the antagonist is a girl who looks suspiciously like an ugly male midget with long hair that lived down a well. Freaky tranny child molestor porn movie in the making: maybe, but a horror film this was not.

I thought this movie was good. The premise was pretty bizarre, but the cinematography was genius - everything shot in shades of gray added to the overall feel of the movie, as if there was always a sense of impending doom.

Alright, i dont care what anyone else thinks, but this movie was really creepy! I'm really not normally scared by scary movies, but for some reason this one freaked me out really bad. I'll admit, now that i watch it, i feel like its kindof silly that you die by watching a video tape, but you just gotta watch it with an open mind. The things on the video tape were probably the creepiest things in the movie. I think what made the whole movie scary was the way they flashed the random images, and those rings. Also the violin music really made it creepy. I really like this movie.
Vudija 02/08/2007
Neither scary nor too entertaining. I watched it, but it certainly could have been done loads better.
primaxdonna 02/08/2007
people actually thought this was frightening?
cherokeebetty 09/14/2006
I didn't like it. They should have just let the Japanese version be the only version. It was much better to me.
Jeremy00081 09/13/2006
This film is WAY overrated. It's good, and nothing more than that. One positive thing I can say about it is it's better than the Japanese original, "Ringu".
Silver Eagle 252 05/17/2006
Gotta agree with some of the other comments that this movie was more creepy than scary. I can't watch this movie in a dark room.
youknownothing 01/04/2006
An excellent movie. The scenes shot in black and white add to the overall atmosphere that this movie generates. And for the record, the original Japanese version is a lot better than the American effort.

This movie was one of the better horror movies I've seen in quite some time.It did not resort to cheap thrills or gratuitous gore, and instead worked through intrigue, suspense and strange yet subtle & mysterious imagery. The acting was good & it was shot with uncanny artistry that made the familiar seem bizarre. It was a bit convoluted, and was the kind of movie one needs to pay strict attention to,otherwise it would be make no sense at all.Even with attentiveness,it was elusive about certain things.I had chalked this up to those things being cleared up in the sequel-but they weren't.Don't bother with the sequel. It's LAME.
ESMladypimp210 11/22/2005
This was a scary movie the first time I saw it, then it got better everytime I watched it because I understood it more.
trebon1038 10/10/2005
I have no idea how people are NOT scared by this one. I am not easily rattled but this movie creeped me out! Whew what a good one!
BugahaNE 08/25/2005
I would rank this as the most boring movie I have ever seen. Scary ??? for a 7 y/o possibly.
dragonx187 08/08/2005
I have tried not once but three times to watch this so called EXCELLANT SCARY MOVIE, and have fallen asleep all three times. Honestly, couldn't keep my eyes open to watch this thing, it was that sad. Everyone was so surprised at the ending they said, i wonder how they ever got that far too see the end. I know what happened at the end only because I got tired of trying to watch it and finally asked someone who did. BORING is an understatement.

Judging by some of the comments below, some people didn't get it.. (WAY BIG SPOILERS) Some wrote something about only having to make a copy of the tape and you lived. Not the case at all. In fact, no copy would be necessary. The point was that Mom (Watts) and son won't die AS LONG AS there are OTHERS who have SINCE seen the tape and THEIR week hasn't passed. So, for example. I see the tape (my 7 days starts). But then I show it to someone else. My 7 days stops (pauses?) until the new victim dies. It's like a chain letter - or rather, a RING... The problem is that I would have to keep showing new people the tape in order for me to continue living. (that's kind of where the movie ends, which made it very creepy for me). Making copies would help this, but I suppose you could just continue showing people the original tape. The copying process has nothing to do with the curse. I hope this helps you appreciate the film a little more...

Whoa that was a WEIRD movie...

feek_sparksr#1 03/26/2005
The best scary movie ever!
inkiemouse 02/26/2005
I had to give it four stars because it scared me so much. ^_^;;; Oddly enough, I went to see it with my father, who has been a correctional officer for over 20 years and has been held hostage, and is a two-time blackbelt. He said this movie creeped him out, so you can pretty much conclude from there... If you have an imagination, this movie will terrify you. If you don't think it's scary, then you've been playing video games too long.
ShyNamaste 12/31/2004
You are an idiot if you gave this movie less then 5.. But I guess you need a bit of brains to understand this one.. To freak you out.
mystic mango 12/21/2004
Scary when I first saw it. But the second time it was boring and stupid.
Skwidney 11/19/2004
i had nightmares YAAAAAAAAAY!
Cindyo 10/18/2004
I have a question about this movie: The whole thing is that if you make a copy of the tape, you wont die. (it was discovered at the end). Rachel made a copy of the tape at the begining of the movie, but why through out the entire movie Rachel is having all these symptoms and signs as if she was going to die? (Bloody noses, blurry picture, hair coming out of her throat etc.)It's hard for me to watch this movie thinking that.
Da Minx 10/04/2004
Did I miss something? After all the hype I was disappointed with this film. Yes it was ok, but it just never seemed to go anywhere. Shant bother with this one again.
foamjack 08/04/2004
You mean all you have to do is make a copy of the tape and you're safe? What if you gave someone a copy? Would they still have to make a copy of the copy? What if you copied it onto dvd? What if you copied over one of youre Dukes of hazzard episodes? Would Rosco P.Coltraine step out of you're tv. That would be sweet.
fanofthebest 07/27/2004
i really like this movie, even though it was not that scary. the way that they would show the things from the movie happening to the people was cool.
cpisaqt 07/26/2004
It is not that scary if you have really scary movies if you know what I mean!
swtascandy17 07/21/2004
The frist time I saw this movie was in the theatres with two girls...I was scared outta my mind! But now I laugh soo hard when ever I watch it! I love horror movies and this was soo great...oh and watch it again its pretty funny to make fun of...! LOVE IT!
India-Ink21 07/05/2004
One of the best horror movies I have seen in a very long time. I have seen it several times (on cable) & it never ceases to frighten. Love it.
Dirty Harry 06/30/2004
Had a few creepy moments but it lacked a sturdy plot. Left too many questions unanswered. Better than many that Hollywood churns out, but still not a real scary movie.
Budc9512om 06/24/2004
Best horror film I have seen in years.
Jamie McBain 06/19/2004
One of my favorite recent horror movies.
LadyShark4534 06/05/2004
I loved Daveigh Chase as Samara Morgan. Daveigh Chase will go far in the cinema. You have to see the Japanese film, read the novel and the comic book to understand this movie better though.
sasha_li 05/22/2004
The scariest movie i've seen in a long time.

evileye 03/25/2004
ONE OF THE SCARRIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE SUSPENSE & SCARRY MOMENTS ARE COUNTLESS!!!!!!! IT MAKES YOU THINK!!!!!!
Cosmo Renfro 03/16/2004
This movie was all in all ok. The effects were neat and the horror was alright but what was the story? It didn't have one. There were too many questions to ask about this film that's why it is only ok and not great. I also agree with axlrod2003 it was too long and got tireing. I highly recomend this movie though because most thick headed teens (all the teens these days) would think it's very scary.
squirrelmaster 69 03/13/2004
this is one of my favorite movies. it was funny seeing everyone freak out in the theater over some of the dumbest things. well it did get me in one part in the theater. i screamed out holy shite and i hurt my friends ear.
DHeman 11/28/2003
This movie is better than most other typical hollywood horror flicks. This movie is not gory like other slasher horrors. The make-up was done superbly. The story was confusing but chilling. And most important the biggest factor of all is that it gets to your mind, it scares you pshycologically. So if you're sick with the typical slasher horrors, see this movie for a change. The more you think about it, the more you will scare yourself. P.S. unplug your TV!
forgotten hero 09/07/2003
It would have been nice to know who or what made the tape. If the family horse ranch was on an island then why was the girl's body dumped into a well on the mainland? When you see this scene you see horses in the background. Which implies that they were at a horse ranch. Were they at a friend's horse ranch? Did they own a second one? Other than these little questions I thought it was funny to watch people freak out at various scenes. The movie wasn't scary at all but it was funny.
laserblaze21 08/09/2003
A good pace movie.I never saw a boring part in this movie except for the horse scene.Watch it everyone, this is one of the better movies out there.
Sheba 07/25/2003
Creepy, but not scary. Plot holes abounded and got down right illogical sometimes. I mean you find out that you have 7 days to live, but you don't get going on a way to stop it until day 4, AFTER you place the same fate on your child and the man you love. PUHLEEZE. There was very little done here by the lead characted to debunk the dumb blonde postulate. The movie slowed down and just dragged on way too long in some parts. The first part was engrossing, but the second part was torturous. So many subplots didn't resolve or just disappeared. If you want to see it done right, rent the Japanese film on which this one was stolen...er...based. "Ringu".
what up dog 07/10/2003
this is probably da freakiest movie i've ever seen. the screeching sound was freaky and i pissed myself when i saw da well part.
kuppie21 06/20/2003
I love horror movies but this one did not scare me at all, I sorta got it and I didn't. It's not what I thought.
LP_rules 06/20/2003
I thought "The Ring" was a really good movie and I also thouught it was scary the fact that they sorta left you hanging is even scarier! but that little boy He didn't blink once in the movie he ws freaky and had some big eyes!!!!! HA HA HA
LP_REPRESENT 06/20/2003
That movie was one of the best movies i have ever seen!
sadako 05/28/2003
Her slayed corpse rests still// her ghost within the tape// watches the watcher
gummocatkilla 05/24/2003
Most over-rated horror movie in recent times.
ecky85 04/26/2003
Really not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. It was also really confusing...especially in the end. The only reason I didn't give it anything less than 3 was because it did keep me interested, but then again, I finished the movie quite diappointed.
