There are some good doctors and some good nurses that are very caring, and these are two very respectable careers, but I have seen a lot more lately that in both professions a coldness and uncaring attitude towards the patient. I guess they forget that maybe one day they will also need the help and understanding of a doctor or a nurse, and it won't be there. Everybody grows older; that's a fact. Also, age holds no barrier. One never knows when they'll need the help.

I was a pre-med student for a while until I was sent to job-shadow in OR. After fainting for a few times, and puking for a while, and standing there pale and sweaty, I decided that it was Lord's way of telling me - "This is not for you!"

there are good doctors who really want to help people and there are those who see their professions as a way of earning very good money and are more than happy to push useless pharmaceuticals for tasty backhanders

Medicine has changed over the years. Growing up my Dad was a GP and a jack of all trades. He made house calls and really cared about his patients. Many of the MDs at the time were this way. Now it is about the money and my Dad said he didnt blame the young Docs for this because the HMOs and the Government have made it almost impossible to practice medicine.

like the devil, keeping people and children alive.

It's great to know that if are you are feeling ill, injured, about to have kids, etc, that there is always a doctor out there to help you, even if the waiting lists can belong and visting a hospital can be very expensive.
VirileVagabond 05/10/2004
As noted in other comments, the medical profession often comes with grueling hours (especially early one), large amounts of educational debt, and high risks in our contemporary litigious society. On top of these concerns, one must have the stomach for disease, gore and misery. While I have the utmost (5 star) respect for those in the medical profession, I could never do it and the downside is just too steep to merit more than three stars in the big picture.

Healing is a fine and noble profession, though a lot of people go into it for the wrong reasons (money and supposed high status).
RebelYell1861 05/28/2003
They keep us healthy; surely that deserves 5 stars.
Redoedo 03/09/2003
A truly noble career which requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. People wishing to become doctors have to work extremely hard to go through college and medical school, and then have to get a job and pay off their tuition debts. Doctors also deal with a lot of mentla stress, as it is impossible for doctors to save EVERY patient that they encounter. They are also forced to deal with the buerocracy of the HMOs and insurance companies. I am so happy that there are still hardworking dedicated citizens willing to puruse this profession.

Being a doctor is a rewarding occupation because they help sick and injured people every day. They don't have to do it, but they do it anyway.

We will always need doctors. I don't care for hospitals but when I'm sick or dying, thank goodness for doctors!

Another profession I have tremendous respect for. My cousin is a surgeon and it is amazing that he has the fate of a person's life in his hands every day. And, how rewarding it must be to play a part in saving someone's life. Thank goodness there are people willing to put in all of those of years of training, only to have to deal with lawsuits and the incredible bureacracy of insurance companies and HMOs.

I give it a "5" for how it would feel to save, help or change a person's life, but a "1" for all the time, effort and sacrafices it would take to become a doctor. It is also hard to accept that you can't save every life. You would be surrounded by people who are sick all the time. You couldn't save all those people. That would be a hard thing to live with everyday. I really respect doctors. I have known some incredible human beings who are doctors and have turned some grim situations better.
Wiggum 12/20/2000
My take is that being a doctor isn't nearly as glamorous as most people think it is. First of all, doctors have to work their asses off in school - both college and med school. Then they graduate with tons of debt, only to go through a grueling, low-paid residency, where they most likely have to deal with brutal hours, some amazingly foul physical problems, egotistical co-workers, and insensitive bosses. The final reward is, admittedly, a good salary and a position where you can really help people. But you're probably at the mercy of your pager, you're constantly worried about malpractice lawsuits, and these days you almost have to have an MBA to deal with all the business issues. Thank God people are still willing to put themselves through this.
