I did this for a year in college when I was living in L5P. Depends on where you work and on what nights you work. On weekends where I was, the atmosphere is electric and its a lot of fun, but on weeknights, unless there is Trivia or Kareoke, it can be a real downer. Also, there were some dirty tricks we had to use to get the customers less drunk ( always made me feel guilty) and now that I know them, I can't un-learn them. It has become annoying to walk into a bar or a club these days and know that I am paying more for less alcohol. The lesson here: Pre-drink. As a job though, it wasn't bad. I enjoyed it for the most part. Good energy, people out and having fun, good money a lot of the time. Bartenders live off tips though and Female bartenders make more in tips so thats kind of a bummer if your a guy. So please, be generous when your out on the town. :-)

Most people I know that have been bartenders only do it temporarily, I never met anyone that stayed a bartender. Most of them didnt like it. But, whatever floats you boat.

In the right place...great job...in the wrong place horrible. Bartenters make more money than servers but put up with a lot of crap sometimes.

I have done this in the past and it is hard and tedious work!
irishgit 08/29/2007
Done it, albeit a long time ago. Has its moments, both good and bad. And its a lot harder work than it seems.

Depending on the bar and the clientele, this can be quite a lucrative occupation - I knew people in school ( mostly females ) who worked as bartenders to make ends meet and pay their tuitions, and when they graduated they still kept bartending, because they were making a killing and having alot of fun. Appearently they decided that the 9 to 5 Rat Race wasn't worth the hassle and decided that they didn't want to be beholden to the whims of some nameless, faceless, corporate warlord. Kudos to them, I say - still, there is something undeniably odd about someone who busts their hiney for 4-8 years to get a law/business/engineering degree, and decides not to put it to good use. To each his own, I guess...

Awesome. . .If it had real benefits and a retirement plan, I'd do it. . .well, there's the fact that I can't spend any weekends with my family. . .

I couldn't do this mainly because I can't juggle bottles and I'd end up stealing drinks.

I have done this (years ago)and it's not all fun and games. Many people become hard to deal with after a few drinks and it's a tough call to flag someone.Bartenders can now be sued for serving someone if they are already drunk (unbelievable, but true). The problem is,some people do not appear intoxicated when they are very much so.Of course, the owner of the bar does not want you to refuse to serve anyone, either, unless they really create a disturbance. All in all, bartenders get low pay-and tips will make or break you.It is a high risk job (at least where I bartended it was) and it can be fun,but you'd better be on your toes at all times.

I've been on the customer side of the bar enough times and I feel it's damn time I get on the other side. My time will come!

I worked in a pub for just one shift - and that was more than enough.... It was my local back here in London, so I knew everyone very well - but I hated it. When I looked at my rota for the week I nearly died.. With one night I would have been up to 3am, and there was no way I could handle that. At the end of my one and only shift i went upstairs (it was meant to be a live-in job) I stank of beer and cigarette smoke- and I do not smoke. Yuck!!!!!!

I think this profession gets glamourized... sure, free drinks is a plus, but you have to put up with all those annoying late night drunks (like me) all the time. And you're working while everyone else is actually out.
alicat 01/04/2001
I see the fun aspect but there are so many other negatives I see before that. I see late nights, a weird schedule, being around drunk people all the time, people yelling at you what they want. Good tips, lots of girls and free booze is great and all but I couldn't do it.
ningatunes 01/03/2001
meet lots of people (some bad and some good) the drunker they get the more your appretiated .. lol... what could be better

A fun, fun job. Everybody is your friend, you work in a fun, social environment, and you get to meet a lot of ladies. It can get a little depressing on those long Tuesday nights however...
